Town to Sign Norwich Midfielder Nunez Wednesday, 27th Aug 2025 21:07 Town are set to sign Norwich City midfielder Marcelino Nunez in a £10 million deal.
The Chilean is understood to be in Ipswich to complete the formalities on the switch for £7.5 million up front plus a further £2.5 million in add-ons.
The 25-year-old, who currently has a minor ankle problem, joined the Canaries from Universidad Catolica in the summer of 2022 and has gone on to make 86 starts and 33 sub appearances, scoring 12 goals, including the free-kick which won the East Anglian derby for Norwich at Carrow Road in 2023/24.
Nunez, who has been capped 31 times by his country, scoring three goals, has a year left on his contract and has turned down new terms on two occasions.
Norwich are reported to be signing Silkeborg’s Pelle Mattsson for £2.7 million as his replacement.
Town have been looking to add to their central midfield options this summer with skipper Sam Morsy, Massimo Luongo and loanee Kalvin Phillips having departed over the summer.
The last player to make the move from Carrow Road to Portman Road on a permanent basis was keeper Andy Marshall in the summer of 2001, while other players have represented both clubs since then on a full-time or loan basis over the course of their careers, including David Wright, Jordan Rhodes, David Healy, Alan Lee, Matthew Bates, Kevin Lisbie and Brandon Williams.
More recently, Liam Gibbs turned down a contract with Town to join the Canaries in 2021.
Among those who represented both clubs on a permanent basis prior to that were Clive Woods, Trevor Putney, John Deehan, Louie Donowa, Clive Baker, Johnny Miller, Peter Morris and Keith Bertschin.
Off the field, former Norwich striker Joe Royle managed the Blues, Paul Lambert both sides, while current Canaries boss Liam Manning, his assistant Chris Hogg and first-team coach/analyst James Krause are all former Town academy players and staff.

I remember his lucky free kick against us but all in all a good player to really help the midfield. Make it a double signing & sign Josh Sargent too. COYBS

Well I’ve been wanting us to sign a creative midfielder for several seasons and never for one moment thought he’d be a budgie. Welcome Marcelino. I had a real chuckle to myself when I read he was injured seems it’s a must reason for us to buy a player these days. How does that work with passing a medical before signing? I’m not being negative but what does this say about our scouting system. I’m so desperate for a win against them I just hope their replacement signing has trouble adapting to the championship.

Minor ankle knock heading into a 2 week break doesnt feel like a calamity to me.... but on here i'm not sure how the world hasn't ended. Get it done, hopefully Jens has enough in the tank for this weekend

Little doubt we need new additions - probably four if Wolfe goes. Unfortunately we have left out business to the last minute, which means we will pay inflated prices. Very much doubt this lad was top of the list early summer, probably way down. That said technically, he is decent amd certainly a good championship midfielder. Sadly, very injury prone and we have enough of those.

if we win the Double next season and he scores 4 in a game against them in October - I'll accept this news

Looks like it will take another few years before fans grasp what Agents tell players when looking to move. Whether fake or not, an injury will be a well-worn tactic for transfers. A bit similar to NFL players being told by Agents to delete the team's social media, and 'hold-out' or 'hold-in' for a better contract. Most agents will be sociopathic by nature, with little Empathy or Morals. It's all about money and status. So we should stop expecting moralistic ways of doing transfers.

Lots of comments on here and the PInk Un about injuries but the stats say he played 32 league games last season and 3 cup games. As a first choice player that not a big number but todays game is a squad game and he may not be first choice here. NCFC supporters are partly slagging him off most mostly concerned over loosing one of their best players to a local rival. Apparently Leeds (Farke) are rumoured to be interested in Sargent.

Lets see if he is really injured or maybe an excuse from Norwich trying to protect an asset they are trying to sell due to the contractual situation. A little underwhelmed so far but I'll reserve judgment and keep the faith until the window closes and the players signed have pulled on the blue shirt.

My brother is a season ticket holder at Carrow Road. This is his view.. Good enough to help you get back into the premier league. Creative midfielder who has a good shot. Scored the free kick against you at Carrow Road two years ago. We were expecting him to leave this transfer window but to a foreign club playing in Europe or a premier league team. Not to another championship team and especially not to Ipswich. May mean he doesn’t have to uproot his family as he can travel to Ipswich.

A taboo event but the Norwich scribes seem very upset in his leaving. However the proof will be in the pudding. Anyone know please why he would not sign the Canary contracts and wanted to leave. Is he as good as their journos say or have we overpaid. The games this coming week end for both clubs are massive.

Decent signing. He is a very good player who will strengthen the team significantly. My only concern is that he along with Cajuste are carrying injuries. I think Taylor could be allowed to leave as Humphries and Barbrook would be decent backup players

According to Norwich City Talk he speaks no English and has shown no interest in learning the language.

For those who can remember Peter Morris also played for both Teams. 'Diesel' was arguably one of Town's best ever box to box players.

Combative and can ally the essential double pivot role, young and athletic enough too, could be a fantastic signing.

Can’t believe some of our fans, continually moaning about the lack of signings, then moaning when we do because it’s not good enough! Priceless! Had a friend who years ago decided to treat his wife to a round the world trip, as she was always moaning he never took on holiday. Her response to the around the world trip, a staggering, “can’t we go somewhere else?” Reminds me of some of the posters on here, dammed if you do and dammed if you don’t! The fun i have had around work colleagues this morning is worth the fee alone!

Norwich have always been a feeder club for us the only time they went the other way was when they were ready for the knacker's yard.

I think we just need to accept that £10M is the going rate for these sort of players in the championship

Their journos are saying they would have hoped to get their money back, £3.5M. Seems like we have overpaid....again.
