McKenna: An Inevitable Decision Saturday, 20th Sep 2025 19:35 Town boss Kieran McKenna says it was an ‘inevitable decision’ for referee Stephen Martin to abandon the Blues’ match at Blackburn Rovers and expects to return to Ewood Park to restage the contest.
With 80 minutes on the clock, Martin halted proceedings due to a waterlogged pitch with the ball visibly failing to bounce or roll smoothly on the playing surface.
The Blues, having also been reduced to 10-men following a red card to Jacob Greaves, were trailing 1-0 after Todd Cantwell had converted a penalty shortly before the hour mark.
“Strange sort of feeling as we stand here now,” McKenna told TownTV. “It was impossible to finish the game. Especially from the start of the second half, the pitch was getting to the point of unplayable, really.
“It was really slushy before the game started but the ball rolled okay in the first half, to be fair, it was holding up a little bit. But the second half, the footing was too slippery to be safe, and then the ball stops moving.
“I think it was an inevitable decision, could have maybe been earlier but in the end there was no other option.”
McKenna thanked the 3,984 travelling supporters who had made the long journey to Lancashire, with the official supporters coaches having left Portman Road at 6.15am.
He said: “Incredible support, really, really grateful. Still in full voice at the end as well in the rain, they’re incredible. We hope to reward them starting next Saturday and in the matches to come.
“There’s every chance we’ll be back up here again and hopefully we’ll reward them because we really appreciate the support.”
Chairman Mark Ashton echoed McKenna’s gratitude, adding: “We’ll look at what we can do for the fans who travelled all this way and supported the team in such difficult conditions. The main thing we want to say is thank you.”
It has been confirmed that Greaves’s red card will stand regardless of the match outcome, which will be determined by the EFL board.

Got to be a full replay, simple as that. Only alternative is one point each and neither will be happy with that.

Isn’t there a rule book for this sort of thing. Talksport reckon they will just play the remaining time, which sounds like complete rubbish

“the League Board has absolute discretion under Regulation 34.2 to decide whether the match is considered completed, replayed in full, or replayed in part” I can’t see that the Board would consider it completed. If it was say 3-0 at 80mins then maybe, but 1-0 is still so open, even with 10 men. Long old trip for 10mins of football if replayed in part. Sounds like most of the second half was unplayable, so if part then maybe 45 mins. Probably just a full replay (hopefully).

It would be utterly ridiculous to make the team travel all that way,to play 10 minutes, plus stopage time. The only sensible outcome is to replay the match in full.

Surely it will just be replayed? As KM says, was pretty awful from half time onwards.... hopefully we learnt a few lessons from the game and it wasn't a complete waste of time. Greaves has made so many mistakes since joining us, loses concentration and so erratic at times... Burgess by far the better player in my opinion and whilst Greaves clearly has potential he needs to start showing it. Could be a blessing that he got the red, if Kipre comes in and performs well. I'm very confident we will still be where we want to be come the end of the season but centre back position could be our undoing. It's a bit worrying....

The second half was entirely unplayable and the officials waited too late. If it's declared as a complete game or just the final few minutes played then dangerous conditions would be accepted. Logic would be replay the game (or at least the second half). However, since when have decisions been logical?

It should be replayed from the start, but can't help worrying that the faceless ones on the EFL board will make a different decision.

Does anyone know if Greaves Red card will stand ?

Has there ever been a 'replay' of less than the entire game? I certainly dont remember one.

No complaints about Greaves red card standing. Quite clear cut red and more poor defending from him. Agree the game had to be abandoned. Shocking really in todays modern game that a match at championship level should be called off in September. Conditions in Hull also looked bad. Thy played the full match. But make no mistake - KM dodged a bullet here. Conditions were the same for both teams and yet again we looked pretty poor. KM must adapt as winter approaches and conditions particularly away from home will be poor.

If the game is to be replayed, then surely it’s been declared null & void. Why then, is it considered correct to uphold a red card, (or yellow), in a match which has in effect been erased? Greaves, for instance, could become the first player ever to be sent off twice in the same game!

This will 100% be a complete replay, no way can the EFL Board sanction any kind of result with 11 mins plus injury time left to play and only 1-0 in a tight game. It won’t be a game picking up at 79 mins either, the only logical fair outcome is a rematch with 90 mins so I would fully expect that, anything else would be a massive lawsuit. Sadly the Red card will still stand with regards to Greaves ban. This game should not have been started and certainly not gone on beyound half time. It will be a full replay.

It was awful for both sides.., we wanted it less, and we were second best, same story as our last 14 months. 80 mins a goal up, and a man up, no way would we accept a full replay if the show was on the other foot. Show some class, they wanted it more and earned it, replay the final 10 minutes or let them have the 3 points they earned. We got what we deserved. Nothing.., 14 months now, it’s time to stop making excuses. 1) We’re just a little league one club…, no players form league one last season except Leif. 2) We signed lots of players. That’s literally our choice and strategy. Now it’s the wrong kind of rain, which apparently is harder for us than any other club. When are the nodding dogs going to wake up. This isn’t elite.., it’s not progress.., it’s £200 million to be less competative than under Mick!

Just want to point out that Blackburn did nothing at half time to try and help the pitch and sent the one poor sod out with a pitchfork after it was abandoned.

Darkhorse28. Just cant help urself can you. Just more drivel. Less competitive than under McCarthy? What planet are you on? As for ur take on whether it's should be a full replay or not. Pathetic. Rules are the rules. There's no way the result can be deemed as done and dusted, at 1-0, however we played or didn't. Which seems to be different to the usual suspects on here, to fans speaking on the kings of anglia video. Of course everyone on here totally negative, while fans on there said we were good 1st half, and even with 10 men in the 2nd half, we were giving it a go. But fact is, just 1 moment of good play or an error by them could have got us an equaliser. So they have to order replay. If it was 2 or 3-0 then clearly id expect them to declare it as a,results

You can’t just play the final10mins another time. I am assuming it has to be the same players? Ok, some of those players (suddenly) have knocks
armchaircritic59 added 00:55 - Sep 21
Only one of two sensible solutions, as obviously you can't send a team such a distance to play a " mini " match. Either it's a complete replay, or Blackburn are awarded the three points, which will probably earn me a few downvotes, not that I'm bothered as it's how it should be, and if the boot was on the other foot I'm sure it's what most would be saying in here!

Only positive was the away following. For those saying it was tight etc and only outcome is for a replay have some integrity if it was the other way round we would be saying result must stand. Luckily I think the efl will go for easier option and go for the replay. Pompey lost to a weak Wednesday so hopefully bounce back next week

I fear that the game will be awarded to Rovers. Hope lm wrong. Remember the diabolical Oxford in the fog decision? The applicable rule basically gives the Committee carte balance to decide what they like. The Rule should be that any abandoned games should be replayed. Keep it simple( yeah l know, when do the football authorities ever do that). Otherwise it’s tantamount to the Committee deciding that no further goals would have been scored. No such thing as late goals eh? Nonsense.

You have to have a little snigger at modern football, when you watch those old matches from the 70s & 80s when the pitch was an absolute mud bath and 22 blokes just getting on with it..... It was the same for both teams,we got away with that yesterday..STILL not convinced by Greaves,I think he spends more time on his 4rse in 1 game than Burgess & Woolfie did in an entire season, the guy really needs to man-up. If it is replayed I don't suppose they can give us a better ref? - he was one of the worst i've seen in years yesterday - awful.
Facefacts added 09:25 - Sep 21
We should be worried that the ref played on in unplayable conditions to make sure it went past 75 mins. The EFL can therefore give the game to them. We won't be able to argue with that.

Another poor performance. Only one team wanted to win the other swaggered around. Left side looks good but midfield and right side is woeful starting with Captain O’Shea who hasn’t been near the level of last season. Having watched Boro on Friday they have such pace and creativity in midfield which we are still lacking. Maybe time for Nunez .
