Hellberg: What a Game!
Sunday, 19th Apr 2026 16:27

Middlesbrough head coach Kim Hellberg hailed his side’s 2-2 draw with the Blues at Portman Road as “one of the best games from the Championship”

The Teessiders were denied a first win in seven by Jack Clarke’s sixth penalty of the season three minutes from the end of a match which had swung one way and then the other.

“What a game, I think it was!” Hellberg said. “Back and forth, it was an unbelievable game of football over 98 minutes, back and forth, both teams trying to press, both teams trying to play out.

“It was one of the best games from the Championship and that’s what you like about football, back and forth, being aggressive, trying to solve it, brave teams. It was a real game of football.

“Of course, the emotions are tough but I think we had more chances than them over 90 minutes and it’s, of course, disappointing that we didn’t win.

“But I think the most impressive thing for us was that with so many players unavailable, key players for us, we come here, even if in the first half they were a little bit better than us, I think, we were better in the second half against a very good team.

“We looked like ourselves all the time, we were trying to press, we were trying to solve it and I’m very impressed by that, also during a tough time in terms of the results having not gone our way. A lot of those emotions.”

Regarding the late penalty when Adilson Malanda hauled back George Hirst as an Anis Mehmeti cross came over from the right, Hellberg said: “It’s a tough one to get against you, of course. To be fair Malanda pulls him a little bit, he put his hands there, which means you always take the risk, if we’re going to look at our own perspective.

“As everyone says, he can never reach the ball. Those things happen all the time, he cannot reach the ball, he’s not first on the ball. He makes it in a good way clear that Malanda has touched him and the referee makes a decision.

“If you look at it our way, you should not give him the opportunity to give them the pen. If you look at many others, I think it was a tough one to get, though.”

Hellberg approached referee Jarred Gillett on the pitch at the end but says they had a positive exchange.

“I talked to the referee after the game in a very good way,” the Swede insisted. “We had a very good discussion after the game.

“I like that, he wanted to talk to me and we had a very good discussion. It was emotions, it was more emotions. I love football and I try to win. Emotions!”

Prior to the match, Hellberg had said that Boro had to win to maintain their automatic promotion hopes.

Asked whether he still believes that to be the case ahead of back-to-back home games against Sheffield Wednesday and Watford, he reflected: “I think we need to look to the two next games to try and win them in every aspect of whatever it is to get into, the chance to maybe to still play for the automatics in the last game or to get momentum.

“It’s more for me now to try to get to those two home games and be as good as possible and bring a lot of energy to them because you have one week then to prepare for the last game [at Wrexham] and then you know what you need from it.

“It is tough because in the 87th minute we’re in a winning position, we’re in it together with everyone else.

“There can still be twists and turns a lot of things can come into it, so we’re not out of it, it’s more about seeing what happens after those two games. I think that’s the most important thing and then we’ll see. You won’t have to wait so long until the Watford game, and then we know. We’ll see and we’ll try and build the momentum.”

Unless there’s a rule that says a defender is allowed to forcibly place two hands on a player inside the penalty area in order to prevent him from reaching the ball, regardless of whether he may, or may not have reached the ball, then it’s not a penalty.

We all know that, no such rule exists.

It’s also ridiculous to suggest that some referees would not have given today’s penalty. That may be the case, but if they ignored it and played-on, then they are not adhering to the rule book. A player simply can not forcibly place both hands on an opponent in order to restrain that player from proceeding. If that infringement occurs inside the penalty area, then most definitely…. It is a penalty.

Some referees may well ignore these type of infringements, but to his credit, todays referee did not, instead he adhered to the rule book, and he made the correct decision.

So Mr, Hellberg, it would appear that you have attempted to rewrite the rule book, I suggest you get yourself a copy and digest it.

By the way, quote - “even if in the first half they were a little bit better than us”. An elephantine exaggeration if ever I saw one, you can cut out the “little bit better” and replace it with ‘they were all over us’.

More sour grapes, these fictitious accounts by opposing managers get more laughable by the game.

Nicely put from Hellberg, when the opposition manager is more positive about the game and our performance than many Ipswich fans then it doesn’t paint us in a great light! Areas for improvement today but thoroughly enjoyable game and still in the driving seat for jtop 2. Now’s the time to get behind the boys. I believe!

Well that was an excellent interview and very good to hear a manager being so enthusiastic about a game his team didn't win. I agree with most of the points made. Well said KH and best of luck for the future.

Yeah, great game, great atmosphere and hopefully we have enough to get over the line, use the £200m wisely and do a sunderland!

The only question about the penalty was wether or not Hirst would have definitely got to it. If yes, it's a penalty and a red card; if not sure, it's a penalty and a yellow card. I think its the latter. Brave refereeing btw. Great game of football by two good teams. I just wish we could play for 90 (or 98) minutes. It's becoming a common theme. COYB

All credit to Boro and their fans to travel that distance for an early kick off and make an exciting Champioshiip game. I do have some sympathy as they have been in the top two for most of the season and to fall at the last hurdle seems fate is against you. If we get top two I genuinely hope Boro wins the play offs although both Millwall and Southampton will be very difficult opponents.

Respect to Boro manager for not whinging and trying to give a fair perspective of the game.

In a match like today with a strong opposition you cannot expect to dominate the possession for 90 minutes, but so frustrating again not to come out in the second half and keep the tempo going, didn't look like we were going to get back into to the game at one point and be put to the sword by Boro.

All credit to Azon and McAteer who personally i have given quite a bit of stick tob during the course if the season, but a terrific worked goal and finish. McAteer gaining confidence and looking like he has ore to offer and much more than Egeli can provide at the moment.

Good performance from Jack Taylor, that energy was missing on Tuesday at Portsmouth, for me if fit Jack needs to start every game now until the end of the season.

Nunez had a very poor game today, not sure he has the temperament for a blood and guts type game and I would probably not have him start against WBA or Southampton.

Egeli no confidence and looks lost at this level, maybe a loan next year for him.

Clarke over Philogene for me any day of the week.

And is Davis becoming more of a liability ithan an asset?

Crawfordsboot.
If you are going to respond to a post, I suggest you read it properly first.
Not once have I said it wasn’t an excellent game.
On the contrary, I believe it was.
Making rude remarks only shows your inability to respond intelligently, and achieves nothing more than self embarrassment.

What a breath of fresh air Hellberg is, lovely to hear an opposing manager being so level headed when i'm sure he's so disappointed with the pen. Class act. As for the game, first half as good as we've played all season but could'nt keep it up. Draw a fair result in the end.

Rimsy, absolutely. The words manager and class act seldom appear in the same sentence these days. It has in yours and rightly so. Looks to have a very bright future in the game. Just has to be careful, it's a game that can suddenly eat you up and spit you out. Managers such as Potter and De Zerbi might have something to say on that and a few others I can think of.

If Hirst wasn't going to reach the ball, then the defender was even more stupid for grabbing hold of him....

On reflection a draw was a fair result, and if we were watching two other top 6 sides play each other, we'd probably be expecting a draw wouldnt we....

Well I watched it back last night and it was a definite foul, so a penalty. But theres no way on earth Hirsty gets to teh ball so it was a stupid one

Yes a great advert for the Championship. Where a handball in the penalty box is a penalty. Then any kind of force using hands in the PB should also be a penalty. Whether or not the attacking player is likely to score. Is took years to establish the current offside rule. The Referee was really good and kept this game flowing well. We are now in a strategic battle, hopefully Town will remain in the same position.

Poet - My first sentence was a comment on your post. The second was simply a comment on the match! :)
