Chaplin Not in Pompey's Plans
Monday, 1st Jun 2026 20:07

Portsmouth sporting director Rich Hughes says Pompey aren’t looking at bringing released Blues forward Conor Chaplin back to Fratton Park this summer.

The 29-year-old spent 2025/26 on loan back at his local side where he started his career, making 27 starts and 10 sub appearances, scoring twice.

Chaplin’s five-year spell with the Blues was up this summer and the back-to-back promotion hero is now available on a free transfer.

But quizzed on whether Chaplin is in his club’s thoughts ahead of the new season, Hughes said not as it stands.

“At this point I would probably say no,” he told BBC Solent. “We’re really grateful for Conor’s impact around the group last year.

“I think Conor would probably be the first one to say it probably wasn’t the return he hoped for, but what he was was an unbelievable character around the building and he was a leader, which I think speaks testament to Conor as a person and as a natural leader.

“To come in as a loan player and show that level of commitment to a group in terms of how he developed it, how he worked with the younger players, how he trained consistently every day, and how he sort of engaged with everything that we ask of players in this football club is testament to him.

“But it’s not something that we pursued at the minute and not something we’re really actively looking to bring in.

“But I think anyone that spoke to anyone who’s affiliated with this football club would tell you what an unbelievable person and character Conor is.

“We’ve also sought his feedback on what he saw, what he thought and how we can get better as a group as well.”

Social media rumour has linked Derby County with a move for Chaplin.

Town should give him another year on his contract...

Don't think Chappers will be short of offers. Top pro, any championship team will be lucky to get him.

I hope Chaplin finds a good club. He’s a cracking player and a real asset at Championship level. He’d be perfect for say Southampton …..only joking. Derby or a club with stature would be a good for them and him.

Wherever he goes or whatever he does next he will always be loved and respected at Town. An incredible person with a huge heart and was so important to the emerging McKenna team.
Thank you Chappers for the great memories.

Good luck to Chaplin. But clearly not good if Pompey don’t want him. Laughable some think we - a PL side - should have offered a deal.

I’ve no doubt he will get a deal somewhere. Top end league one side.

It was apparent that they played Chaplin out of position ,at Portsmouth. So no wonder he did not produce the goals or assists.I hope he chooses a Club where he can play in his favourite position.
Good luck and thanks for your contribution over the years.Seeing you run across the pitch with your coat on when we scored the winner against Southampton will always be in my memory.

A good club will find him a good home. Absolutely awesome person and solid pro.

Wherever he goes will get a top pro, a leader and more important than anything else, a proper human being.

So Pompey are not willing to meet his salary demands, is that it?

He was a great player for us, but we have moved on and up. I wish him well, but I agree entirely with jas0999.

Poor from them, would imagine he had a huge influence in their dressing room last year....

Wherever he goes I hope he is loved and appreciated! Wouldn't mind seeing him go to a big league one club where they can build their team around him, like he deserves....

I agree with money being a big factor here. CC was on massive wages in out PL year, probably half that in championship but still an awful lot more that PFC can probably afford to pay

Only confirms what most of us already knew. Chappers is a super person and a great influence on the training ground but unfortunately he is no longer the player he used to be. I assume that he will move into coaching/management soon but, if he wants to continue playing at the moment, I hope he can get a decent contract at a good club. If not perhaps we can find a coaching role for him.

People here indicating he’s a L1 player are far off the mark. CC is only 29 and at his peak. He has oroved he’s of top Champs standard. And despite difficulties playing out of position in a struggling Pompey side, there is nothing to suggest he’s lost anything. In fact I just looked back at highlights of his games for us at the start of last season, before we loaned him out, and he was excellent.

Yes Chappers one of my favourite players of the last few years but popularity and sentiment doesn't guarantee you a starting place in the team im afraid not at professional level anyway. I think he reached his peak at Ipswich and found it difficult at Portsmouth in a team far less talented to repeat that.
