Gunners in for Wright Sat 01st Jul 2000 12:31 Reports today suggest that Arsenal may be about to make a bid for Richard Wright. Arsene Wenger is said to be a long-time admirer of Wright and sees him as an ideal replacement for 37-year-old David Seaman. Town would look for a fee of £4 million and above for the full international keeper transfer-listed this week. One report claims that Alex Manninger may come to Town as a make-weight in a deal for Wright, although this seems to be pure press speculation. Celtic manager Martin O'Neill, linked with Wright despite his statement yesterday saying he had made no contact with club, player or agent Jonathan Barnett, looks likely to monitor the situation. |
O'Neill Denies Any Celtic Approach Fri 30th Jun 2000 16:00 Celtic manager Martin O'Neill has said that Celtic have not made any contact with Richard Wright, Ipswich Town or Wright's agent Jonathan Barnett. The new Parkhead manager did express interest in the player and an approach in the near future is still very likely. Leicester, O'Neill's former club, regularly watched Town last season with their targets rumoured to be either David Johnson or Richard Wright. |
Barnett Speaks! Fri 30th Jun 2000 11:13 Town have been too hasty in putting Richard Wright on the transfer list according to the keeper's agent Jonathan Barnett. |
Celtic and Chelsea 'Express Interest' in Thu 29th Jun 2000 18:33 Reports from various national sources are claiming that both Celtic and Chelsea are expressing interest in Richard Wright. One source suggests Arsenal may also be involved in the chase for the £4-£6 million rated keeper. It seems likely that more stories of this nature will appear in the next few days. There still seems to be no statement from the player or his agent, Jonathan Barnett (possibly the least popular man in Suffolk these days). George Burley has made a statement which said much the same as David Sheepshanks earlier missive (See previous Newsnet). Burley hoped that an agreement could be come to and added that if Wright does go a player with a full England cap, 22-years-old with 220 appearances should fetch a very large fee. |
Sheepshanks Makes Statement Thu 29th Jun 2000 14:16 Town chairman David Sheepshanks has made a statement on the Richard Wright position. As yet there is no confirmation of the Celtic story, but as soon as there is anything else we'll post it. |
Wright to Celtic Shocker Thu 29th Jun 2000 13:58 Reports within the hour suggest that Richard Wright is on his way to Celtic to discuss terms. We have very little other than that, but it seems to come from a reasonably reliable source. More as we hear it. |
Wright Will Not Sign Confirmation Thu 29th Jun 2000 13:38 As reported earlier in the day it seems Richard Wright has told the club he won't sign an extension to his contract and will therefore go on the transfer list. Reports elsewhere suggest that the club have offered Wright a contract extension which would make him the highest paid player in the club's history by some way, but the offer has not been enough to tempt the England keeper into signing. Wright seems content to see out his remaining year before either leaving or signing a new deal. Town, however, will see things differently and Wright will be transfer listed as soon as an official announcement is made. Town are likely to get between £4 - £6 million for Wright with Keith Branagan likely to get the number one shirt should Wright be sold. It is not expected that Town would look for a new keeper. |
Scales to Decide Saturday Thu 29th Jun 2000 10:53 Spurs centre-half John Scales looks set to decide whether he joins Town by Saturday. The former Wimbledon and Liverpool man, recently released by Spurs, is available on a free. He has spoken to George Burley, but has had offers from elsewhere including former club Wimbledon and Portsmouth. A move to a Premiership club would of course be attractive, but the 33-year-old may have to weigh up other factors. |
Wright Decision Today Thu 29th Jun 2000 10:44 Usually reliable sources are indicating that today will see Town make an announcement on the future of England keeper Richard Wright. And the clever money seems to be on the 22-year-old failing to put his name on a new contract and therefore being put on the transfer list. Most were expecting Town to make an announcement tomorrow when Wright was due to come back to manager George Burley after speaking to him last Friday. Wright has one year of his contract left and Town want to avoid him going abroad on a Bosman or at a reduced fee to another UK club. |
Coventry Away Only Sky Game Wed 28th Jun 2000 12:26 Sky TV have announced the fixtures they are covering in the first half of the season and as expected Town have just one game: Coventry away on Monday November 20th (kick off 8pm). Sky are likely to feature Town more often after Christmas when they expect us to be in the relegation zone. |
