VAR is literally useless
at 10:29 18 May 2025

Football was one of the last major sports to adopt it, and it's as if they looked at cricket, rugby, NFL etc and just binned the things that work

Problems with VAR

- Narrow range of what can be looked at
- The fact that is instigated by people who are not in the ground
- Complete lack of transparency while they are doing whatever it is they do

Give it to the teams, allow the teams two failed reviews per half for anything they want to be looked at, but they have to specify what they are appealing for (e.g. number 7 was offside). But not to appeal for someone to get a card.

Have the VAR people look at all yellow and red cards

The gap between the Premier league and the Championship
at 08:44 12 May 2025

We've seen it with our eyes, it's huge

I thought I would make a statistical comparison between the leagues, and have used 6 teams - Leeds, Burnley, Sheffield United, Leicester, Southampton and us.

I looked at the difference between the goals for per game, and goals against per game and how these compare when teams were in the Premier league against the Championship.

Leeds - on relegation in 2022/23, they had a negative goals per game difference (GPGD) of -0.79, last season in the championship they had a positive GPGD of 0.82 so a difference of 1.62, this season their GPGD improved to 1.41

Leicester - on relegation in 2022/23, they had a negative GPGD of -0.44, in the Championship last season it was 1.04, a difference of 1.48. This year in the premier league it is -1.31, a huge drop off of -2.35.

Southampton - on relegation in 2022/23, they had a negative GPGD of -0.97, last season it was 0.52, and this year back in the premier league it is -1.58, so they improved by 1.48, but have then regressed by 2.11

Ipswich - In last seasons championship, our GPGD was 0.76, which has deteriorated to -1.17 in the Premier league, a difference of 1.92

Burnley - On promotion in 2022/23 their GPGD was 1.13, which fell to -0.97 in the Premier league, a difference of 2.1, they registered a GPGD this season of 1.15, an almost idential swing back

Sheffield United - In their promotion in 2022/23 they had a GPGD of 0.74, last season it was -1.82 (comfortably the worst of anyone) a drop of 2.56 ! This year they have a GPGD of 0.59, a recovery of 2.41.

These show the gap is enormous, teams are at least 1.5 goals per game worse off in the Premier league than in the Championship.

Clearly I am not comparing apples with apples, players will be bought and sold etc

To survive in the premier league you need to probably have a GPGD of no worse than -0.6 and some luck. If GPGD continues to deteriorate by between 1.5 and 2.5 you are going to need to record one on promotion of at least 1, if not 1.5.

Leeds perhaps then have a chance, a drop off of 2 from their 2024/25 figure of 1.41 would give -0.59. They have excellent goals for and against ratios (2.06 and 0.65)

Burnley would have to have a lot go for them, their GPGD of 1.15 is built almost entirely on their crazy defensive record.

Sheffield United (if they win the play offs), only have a GPGD of 0.59, the minimum drop off of 1.5 leaves them close to our performance, so very little chance.

For the 3 relegated sides in the championship, to better the best of the rest (Sunderland) who recorded a GPGD of 0.3 this season they will have to improve as follows :

Ipswich + 1.46
Leicester + 1.61
Southampton + 1.88

The average gap between the divisions has been 2.08, therefore statistically, these should be the top 3 in the championship next season (although there is the wildcard of Birmingham (GPGD of 1.15 this season) - for reference our GPGD fell by 0.67 between league one and the championship.

Arguing with the officials.

Norwich away, mid 90's, penalty given to town, then mysteriously a random offside call nullified it after they went nuts, ball was on the spot ready to go

Hopefully not, in League one Attanasio could throw money at it with no issues. Better off them becoming the next Preston

Away Ballots
at 08:03 14 Feb 2025

What was your suggestion on improving it ?

I did similar, suggesting a weighted ballot system for all the tickets (i.e. 40 points, 40 entries in the ballot) etc

If you're going to Prague, take a trip on the train to either Kutna Hora (world heritage site) or Karlsteijn castle, both close by and well worth a look

So bored of away point moaning
at 17:01 28 Jan 2025

Simple, it's a closed shop now, it is virtually impossible to get anywhere on away tickets now.

I went to 10 away matches the season before the scheme, but because I had no gold card (I just relied on my season ticket) I lost the points.

I am now on 12 points

I have not won a single ballot for an away ticket all season.

Even if I did, it would be fine for that match, but I would realistically need to get 8 points at least to get to 20 and any realistic hope, no chance.

I've been to 2 away games all season, both in the home end.

I've been going to away matches for nearly 40 years, not as prolifically recently as some, but I currently have no chance.

I've suggested to the club that for next season they introduce a weighted ballot system - so with my 12 points I get 12 entries into the ballot, those with 40 points get 40 entries. I also suggested that they set aside say 500 away season ticket holders that are sold on the basis of most points get the opportunity first.

Personally I think that would be much fairer.

Great warrior for the club, but amazing how the game has changed, he would not play premier league football today !

Rumours from the Man City end that that they have a 30mil buyback clause

Surely players will be hesitant to go to Man City at the moment pending the court case anyway ?

Since Brentford, he had been really good, until the mistake yesterday, I think we have to stick with him, I don't think Walton is better unfortunately.

Next 8 games take us to Feb 1st
at 08:21 9 Dec 2024

It was always going to be a tall order, so many things against us from the very start.

- The three promoted teams last year going down means that Forest with 3 years PL money are the next 'poorest' financially to us, even Leicester and Southampton have 9 years premier league money out of the last 10 seasons. Therefore all the teams can build squad depth and quality.
- We are hamstrung by the PSR rules, we simply could not invest in squad depth to the level we need to to compete. Perhaps Forest's approach was right, but it is a huge gamble if you do go down.
- The transfer window closing after the season begins is a huge problem for teams in our position, we do not have a settled squad to train with, get to know patterns of play etc. The other teams are just tending to tweak their squads a little, and in this league you lose so many players during international breaks you don't get the training time with the whole squad.

So essentially, we pretty much had a slim chance or no chance.

Another shocking performance from the ref last night...
at 09:28 4 Dec 2024

This would have had a huge impact on the game too. They were swarming us when we had the ball, them going a man down for the whole second half would have really made it difficult for them to continue doing that.

Another shocking performance from the ref last night...

He was awful, they dived at the slightest contact and he fell for it every time, injury time was a joke, the 3 minutes was just the substitutions, there was so much time wasting from Henderson, it should have been at least double that.

Exactly, and make it transparent like cricket and rugby where the conversation is played to the crowd, and the incident is shown on the big screens

Cardinal park - parking changes
at 18:22 29 Oct 2024

I noticed this season that the car park has changed to pay on exit, rather than paying when you park. Has anyone forgotten to pay and got a fine ? I did after the Everton game and although I remembered within 24 hours and contacted them to try and pay they refused. Seems like a huge racket to me especially given there are no exit barriers
