I think he's the ultimate 'passable in the Premier League but would be very very useful in the Championship' player. Based on Tuanzebe's injury record and Clarke still not quite being good enough as first choice (IMO) and not being squeaky clean injury-wise himself, I think we'd be mad to let Johnson go, unless it was indeed a big offer. |

A 'ridiculously' wild take now? A take where I've said there's an element of doubt over a decision to award a penalty or not ? A take which is almost by definition backed up by the fact the referee didn't give it in real time and neither did the video ref on review? Not sure what the LCFC comments are proving by the way. |

I think you do understand, because I've explained it. You just don't agree with it, which is fine. Ask 1,000 neutral football fans about that incident and plenty will say the attacker is too soft and goes to ground too easily. |

Well you can think that but like almost everything it's subjective. If you were to try and claim it's not a subjective decision then you don't have a leg to stand on. There's an element of doubt as there clearly was live and by the folk in the VAR room. Not everything is black and white. |

You're probably right about the planted feet and bracing for impact in fairness. But in answer to the question it's more or less what I've already said. To put it plainly and frankly Chaplin goes down like a sack of spuds. I don't think he steams into him, he rushes out but I wouldn't say he's going at full pelt. Just don't think he's strong enough, which unfortunately has been a theme for him when he's played this season. This is turning into a post slagging off Conor Chaplin which is not intended at all, but physically he has struggled this season. There was even one or two moments on Saturday after he came on, which won't have been on any highlights, where he's closing down the likes of Burn/Trippier and trying to compete physically and he just bounces off them and actually tries to claim a foul. If someone could define 'wiped out' I'd appreciate it. Chaplin has two feet off the ground at the point of impact, which was never going to help him stay upright. When a defender shields the ball out for a goal kick and follows the striker trying to get around him wherever he goes, is he interested in the ball? Being interested in the ball isn't always relevant, rightly or wrongly. As mentioned, all I'm saying is there's an element of doubt. There's obviously some sort of reason it wasn't given, live or by VAR, so it kind of backs up my point. Unless we start talking about corruption again... |

If the player is lightweight enough then it won't take much for it to look like they've been 'wiped out'. Chaplin, like it or not, is a very lightweight player in this league. I think it looks awful in slow motion, but in real time i can't help but feel chappers is just not quite strong enough. I'm not nailed on in that view, I just think there's enough doubt that excuses it not being given. If you start comparing it to other decisions that are given then obviously it starts to look more glaring, but that's a can of worms. |

Different types of instances in my view. The Chaplin one was a collision in a crowded box. I think 50% of those get given, maybe even less. I maintain that everyone went over the top appealing so much for that and we only complain about it because we didn't win the game. The Enciso one yesterday was cynical. Whether or not it should be given is highly debatable, it's lovely piece of cheating, but Enciso is making it quite clear he wants to impede Murphy's run. |

It's not corrupt, it's just that the gap between teams like Newcastle and Ipswich is so big that the inclination of officials is that Ipswich probably would have to cheat to get ahead in a game like that, hence the split second decision to see Johnson's fall as a dive and not a foul. If that had been at the other end it's more likely he'd give a foul because it's more likely we'd have needed to foul the man to stop him getting in the box - because it would have been a player of much higher quality than Ben Johnson. And if we're honest you can see why that inclination exists. To get a win or even a draw yesterday we would had to foul them a lot (which we did) and get away with it a lot (which we didn't). Bigger clubs get more decisions because they play better, are fouled more and aren't typically the ones trying to 'spoil' the game. I don't use that word disparagingly but if one team was trying to disrupt that game it was us. (I haven't seen the Ben Johnson incident since seeing it in the ground by the way.) It's also the same foul that Enciso screams for every 5 minutes while clutching his ankle in fake outrage. It's awful but the irony that Enciso gave it away is unavoidable. |

I seem to remember a few years ago Rafa Benitez played a rather special 10-0-0 formation at SJP against Man City (I think). I half wonder if we do the same and make it the worst game of football ever seen. If Greaves can get enough protection from Burgess I wonder if his physicality might actually be a plus at LB, albeit Murphy isn't weak by any stretch. I don't see another option there really, bar Tuanzebe at a stretch but that's purely because he's a good defender - he would look very unnatural on that side. Even Kane will be getting on at that stage. He should have made way a couple of times for Watkins during the Euros last summer, so two years on from then who knows what the situation will be. Always possible a young hot shot comes through in the next year but barring that I think Delap should be nailed on as long as he continues in the same vein as current. Solanke probably still in with a shot Delap has had a better season this year. I always want Delap to go now. He's got no business being in the Championship and imagine if he, for whatever reason, had a terrible season or got a massive injury. He deserves to test himself at a big club. |
