QPR are 6th in the form table since 1January. Higher than Hull and Coventry. Level on points with Leicester. They’re a decent team with an excellent manager.

Very odd headline to go with...
at 12:16 30 Apr 2024

You’re absolutely right it’s an odd headline. The article itself, while a bit bland and not really saying anything new, is fair enough and the idea that Town fans will be wondering why it didn’t work out for Cook is ok, albeit we’re very happy with how things turned out. But on no planet is anyone asking “what if?” And tbf to the writer I don’t think he says that, it’s only the headline that does.

Premier League spending cap...

TBF I’ve probably picked the wrong example by choosing one club rather than the whole league.
If you look at the current rules, which basically say clubs can’t make more than a certain level of losses, they’re clearly aimed at the “sustainable” side of the argument. But by preventing a club spending much more than their income it makes the league less competitive because it bakes in the status quo.

The gap between the “haves” and the “have nots” hasn’t got any smaller - in fact it’ll get bigger as the other mega rich clubs react. All you’ve done is created one more “have”.

It might help Newcastle be more competitive with the mega rich clubs but that’s not the same as keeping the competitive nature of the league as a whole.

Completely agree. My initial reaction is that if Man City and Chelsea don’t support it then it’s probably a good thing but it needs to be stress-tested.
One of the issues lies in the BBC quote “The Premier League says the current regulations are designed to try to ensure the long term financial sustainability of clubs and maintain the competitive nature of the league by preventing unfair advantages”.
This are two different things and in achieving one you can make the other worse. The Saudi injection of cash into Newcastle does probably improve the financial sustainability of that club, but it certainly doesn’t help the competitive nature of the league.

Just got back from Loftus Road
at 23:18 26 Apr 2024

My god what a performance from QPR. Every player at it from minute 1 to minute 96. And the best atmosphere I’ve ever experienced at a non IpswIch game.
We probably need to give a little bit of thanks to Sheffield Wednesday too. If they hadn’t won on Sunday QPR would have been safe before tonight’s game. That need for points to stay up permeated everyone - players and fans.

Couple of Leeds fans still there
at 23:11 26 Apr 2024

At half time Mark Prince, the dad of Kiyan Prince (a QPR academy player who was stabbed 18 years ago) was doing a piece on the pitch about the foundation set up in his son’s name to tackle knife crime. He got booed by some Leeds fans. Classy.

Point of order, it’s “We are QPR, say we are QPR”

Anyone else heading to Loftus Road on Friday?
at 15:43 24 Apr 2024

Yes, I’ll be there. They’re my local team and I’ve been to a few games this season so I’m “known” to them. Pleased they still need a point to be sure of staying up.

I’m pretty sure Vincent Kompany did his MBA dissertation on this.

Do we want a Southampton win tomorrow now then?
at 22:12 22 Apr 2024

I think we probably do. But unless Leeds drop points against QPR or Leicester do at Preston then they’ll have no chance of promotion on the last day and, given the injuries they’ve already got, I’d fully expect them to rest players for the play offs.

Yes, I’m not a proper mathematician either but having written it all down (rather than guessed it as per my earlier post) I get the same numbers as you.
But surprisingly there hasn’t been a Celtic v Rangers SFA cup final for over 20 years, and in the League Cup there’s only been 4 in the last 20 years, so either they’re meeting in the semi finals quite often or they’re getting knocked out by other teams along the way.

Don’t think I’ve ever been so anxious…

Southampton losing at the weekend has thankfully removed the possibility that Saints and Leeds can play out a tame draw on the last day of the season and both get promoted, even if we beat Huddersfield.

If they're both in the semi then the chances of them meeting at that point are 1 in 3. So even allowing for the chances of them meeting in earlier rounds I'd be surprised if it's as high as 50% that they meet before the final.

Yes, just bought mine. First time this season I haven't been able to get in North Stand or Churchmans.

Probably easiest to let Leicester go now

But Leicester’s other two games are Preston (a) and Blackburn (h). Not sure that losing to Southampton will stop them getting promoted.

If Sheffield Wednesday get a point tomorrow then QPR will still need a point as at the time of their game against Leeds.

Evertons financial situation 😲
at 12:35 19 Apr 2024

TBF what you've described is pretty much the current FFP rules but without the allowable losses. Not saying this is good or bad but when you say "There should be a clear rule ..." there already is! And Everton seem to spend most of the time justifying why it shouldn't apply to them.
