I guess it was always going to evolve. Teams are countering it quite effectively and so now managers - Guardiola included as he always has - will have to find ways to get around that. |

It's hard to get out of that impending doom, but there was almost a secondary moment of joy seconds later when it dawned on me that wasn't going to be ruled out! |

Yep. Was great celebrating a goal knowing it wasn't going to be chalked a couple of minutes later due to the ball flicking someone's finger nail on the halfway line! Also really good to be involved in a close game that could go either way rather than just waiting for the pummeling. |

He was doing what we need to do far more of which is thinking outside the box, being quick and making something happen. Didn't work out this time, but we're so much less predictable with him in the team. The quick long passes round the corner, the sudden shots and even that header whilst laying on the ground. At least that's what it looked like! |
 | Forum Reply | It was crucial not to lose at 15:55 17 Aug 2025
Absolutely. Even if we'd lost there was lots of good stuff coming out of that, although it is another positive that we didn't! A home point too! On the up. |

Playing out a very enjoyable game of football. It was important not to lose at this stage and we're unbeaten following two of the toughest fixtures we're likely to get this season. Can also see signs that if and (hopefully!) when it all clicks we're in for some great entertainment! Lots to be positive about. |

It says a lot that £17m is considered "low risk" for us now! 😂 |

I may have gone off piste with the wasteful and reckless thing with this particular post, but that is broadly my understanding and what I've tried to put across to other posters who claim that we just wilfully ignored certain markets. We did what we could in the circumstances and in those circumstances I think we recruited sensibly with an eye on the long term. |

Yep, I don't shy away from the club getting things wrong and that the club have admitted it too. But I assume they didn't just decide to only go for young Championship players rather than experienced Premier League players and that rather we just couldn't get any on our terms? To be fair I can't say I have an in depth knowledge of Sunderland's current situation so it is unfair of me to say they'll be in trouble if they go down, but if we'd just gone all out signing expensive players no matter what then I guess there is a danger in that too. It's just this constant discourse the that we've been reckless and wasteful with our recruitment whereas in the circumstances we've actually set up with a solid and promising team for future years in a sensible fashion in the circumstances. |

Because you have to. Why would Gamechanger rebuild this club (which they haven't finished doing by a long chalk by the way) only to blow it on the off-chance that we might stay up which you have have to accept is the less likely option. The reward of taking that chance and it succeeding is monumental, but the consequence of failure could be catastrophic to a club like ours, as we've discovered in the past. I'd we take the slow and careful long-term approach to success. |

There are numerous stories of clubs being put off signing Haaland in his younger days because it was a gamble. Although there are also numerous stories of the "next so and so" who never made it, so I wouldn't want to put on too much pressure. Plus I suspect that he is from Norway may lead to some lazy comparisons. IF we get him I'll be excited to see how he progresses. |

He's done so much for us and I'll remember him fondly for that. And happy enough for him to go back up to the Premier League to push for an England place, earn more money and all that. However, we've also done a lot for him and frankly I've found his antics recently deeply ungrateful. |
 | Forum Reply | 1 win at home all season at 21:11 16 Aug 2025
Yes, at the end, already down, devoid of confidence and no jeopardy whatsoever. Although I don't think it would've made any difference to staying up, I wish we'd had this West Ham team on the opening day. Remember the game we gave Liverpool in the circumstances and they're infinitely better than West Ham! I really do want the promoted teams to do well and for at least one of them to stay up for the good of English football and also selfishly if Ipswich go back up straight away it would be better for us. However, I don't know whether I can take a season of all this trashing of OUR team every time one of them happens to chalk up a win. [Post edited 16 Aug 23:05]

Hardly the same though. Sunderland, full of confidence and excitement, 46,000 roaring them on against a West Ham team that we have no idea how will be this season. Don't forget we gave Liverpool a great game in the same circumstances a year ago! |

It's not wasted in the long-term though. We'll see first if Sunderland if they stay up and if they don't what they'll be left with in the long-term. |
