Pros and cons of food aid
at 12:46 3 Jul 2020

Be careful - you'll have the self appointed giving you grief for setting up aid points when you should be looking at the systemic issues causing deprivation.

Or something.

Nah, good on you - keep grinding away. My wife works in education and I've just been made aware of some harrowing stories from during the lockdown. You only need to make a difference to one kid for it all to have been worth it.

But it's easier to bung this in the microwave for 10 minutes, till it goes ping.

Given I'm quite closely involved with my local foodbank, I'm rather well acquainted with the issue.

I've posted on numerous fora regarding how (predominantly Tory) MP's seem to quite enjoy popping along to a photo-op at foodbanks. I'd much rather they turn up when we are able to close them down through lack of need.

How do you consider that we've got into a state where people are unable to cook basic meals from scratch? Why do you think it seems to have spiked in recent years?

I await you to educate me on the issue.

On a related note, our neighbour gets a delivery from Olio of unsold food at its sell by date. Its invariably fresh stuff. We have one person we know who gets parcels from the foodbank, so we invited them for first dibs on the delivery.

They rejected it all.

The foodbank is basically beige food, designed to last. The Olio delivery was all good, fresh stuff.

I shake my head.

My "second" team is Lincoln City.

I'm well aware of what that shyster got up to and I'm stunned anyone employed him, in any capacity, after that.

Boris Johnson - summer schools
at 11:49 15 Jun 2020

Clearly, it's unacceptable for a school to have to operate in this manner. The government, which has been Tory dominated for the last decade, need to be made accountable for this.

The fact they're going to stop feeding hungry kids over the summer is nothing short of scandalous.

on a point I think you nearly touch on, I refuse to accept criticism of schools on the grounds that they are places of sanctuary for kids with troubled home lives.

Schools are there to teach, not replace social workers.

I think the govt are on a sticky wicket when they try to play that card against teachers.

In fairness, and in Bully's defence, I can also see how my initial post may have implied that ALL teachers have bust their balls to support learning. Patently, this isn't the case everywhere, though it certainly has been true of the teachers I know (the wife is a primary teacher, I know a fair few around this area).

My original question remains, who will staff these summer schools and where will the govt put them.

I see Gavin "the traitor" Williamson has suggested a "volunteer army", akin to the NHS volunteers, undertake this work.

Well, that's possibly just the latest bonkers idea from a government now renowned for stupid ideas.

In his infinite wisdom, the PM is apparently in favour of kids going to summer classes.

Three questions on that:

1. Where do they plan to hold these classes, as schools are simply not big enough to accommodate socially distanced students, in that quantity?

2. Who is going to teach them, as teachers are only contracted for a certain number of days? Whether he likes it or not, teachers have worked their likes arrises off to get lessons out to their students, and will have used up those days.

3. Related to the previous, assuming he can find staff willing to work over the summer, they should do it pro bono - how will they fund this?

No way would any manager have gone with a trio of Dobra, El Miz and Lankaster. No experience there at all and no real ball-winner. I could foresee a line-up:

GK
KVY - Chambo - Wolfie - LB
Downes - Dozzer
Lankaster - Huws - Bish
Jackson

The front four you can move around as you like to include Norwood, Dobra, Sears, Edwards, El-Mizouni etc.

You also have Nydam coming back into the side, which will be a huge benefit.

The defence was, at times, an absolute shambles, typified by Wycombe away.

Chambers got caught wrong side of their forward who crossed for his colleague to miss an open goal, with noted full back Gwion Edwards bloody nowhere.

They brought Akinfenwa on and 30 seconds later, we were fishing the ball out of the net, because he bullied the centre halves and then Norris went walkies. And not for the only time in that month!

That's not to say that the front line did well, far from it. Judge was a crushing disappointment and the loss/under use of any sort of creative or ball-carrying threat from the midfield was criminal.

Injuries played a part - just how much was Nors' groin an issue? A fit Teddy Bishop? A fit Emyr Huws?

Suspect Lambo has 3 months of the new season to show he's the man or he may well be at the jobcentre. In many ways, he's lucky he isn't already there.
