McKenna & Ashton Interview
at 21:53 5 Sep 2025

I thought that the emphasis on time, wider picture was definitely setting expectations.
But not sure anyone expected we would be talking about needing time to build in the championship this time last year.

Yeah it does appear that it was less about wanting to go back to Portsmouth and more about realising that he might need to leave Ipswich, not necessarily wanting to, and Portsmouth presented the only option he was likely to be interested in.

5 goalsl and 2 assists in half a season is pretty decent for a no. 10 in a team that spread the goals around.
Whilst I wouldnt disagree that his output was less in the 2nd half of that season, and I dont think he was quite as effective, have to also consider that we had a better set of squad options to rotate in the 2nd half of the season (Sarmiento, Omari), whilst its reasonable that Chaplins role started to change as Omari developed more and wanted to play in similar areas (and Chaplin kept getting picked most weeks).

I think thats a pretty good summary. I wouldnt say he fell off a cliff by any stretch. Omari was more involved and it did feel like he would ultimately take his place as No. 10, but it was Broadhead who showed more inconsistency and was the one who dropped out a bit more.

I think the reaction is more about the connection between players and fans now. Chaplin was not only a popular player amongst fans, but played an important role in the community side of the club too. The club have done well to nurture the relationship between club and fans over the last few years, the continuity obviously helps when the club are successful. Chaplin was the most prominent one left (aside from Burns, who we may/may not see again).

Now its back to the summer of 2021 when a whole load of new players arrived and new relationships need to be built, which was of course where Chaplin arrived to start with.

It feels like hes leaving too early and that interview seems to suggest much the same. Yeah, Pompey is a club he loves, but hes got another one that he loves just as much now and, maybe, isnt quite ready to be leaving behind yet.

Stopping time wasting

Yeah exactly, they have to advise the 4th official they are going to send on the physio and the 3 mins gets automatically added.
Otherwise, they can treat the player off the pitch and the referee can use his discretion to allow the game to stop for a bit immediately, but can then restart the game when he chooses.

That is a good idea. Derby did a lot of that with throw ins yesterday too- the whole point of it being a throw rather than a kick-in is supposed to be for speed.

Yeah the bigger issue is not so much how much time is in play, although that clearly is a factor and has an obvious impact on the value for money, but on how the repeated stoppages change the whole flow of the game.
A large part of football is the momentum and how a team can build that up and change the course of a game. All the stoppages prevent that happening and its hard to know how to resolve.
To me, faking injuries is the thing- I think it might help to insist that all player treatment has to take place off the pitch, unless the physio deems it to be serious and if thats the case it adds a mandatory 3 mins of injury time.
That feels like enough of a deterrent that a team wouldnt want to be doing that 5 or 6 times as the amount of extra time would feel like a big enough punishment. But at the same time, allowing a sensible amount of time to deal with a serious injury that prevents a player from standing/walking. In honesty, how many of them are there genuinely in a game?

I think he was simply doing that to waste time. No other motive. Knowing that he was an ex player so he could try and milk that.

I think the key point, without being melodramatic, is that if we are another 6 games down the line and the results and performances are still the same, then there is probably a conversation to be had about whether something is broken.
Especially given that there are such a high number of players that will have been here for a year and not delivering either.

Given the video filmed on the roof was during day time, that might not be far from the truth!

Have you considered that there might be a reason that excludes us from buying a team of big, athletic, pacy players, who also have the technical ability to play in the PL?

Hes available, within our price range (Id assume) and probably one of the best options we could get who would suit what we are looking for.
If he played for anyone else, he would be the perfect signing- Im not sure he would especially show much loyalty to Norwich if the opportunity was there.
The only thing that feels like an obstacle is the willingness of them to sell to their biggest rival- but that might depend how desperately they need to sell him and put money on the books (dont know the answer to that, but theyve spent a lot)

We signed 12 players last summer, dont think we will beat that for several summers.

Everybody is in agreement
at 09:50 10 Aug 2025

Think I am slightly conflicted on this at the moment.
On one hand, there is an expectation amongst the fanbase that we have a championship super team ready to go that simply struggled with the level last season and will be dominant at this level. There's plenty of substance to that given what's happened with other recently relegated sides, but there's every possibility that we have a team that's actually a bit dysfunctional, regardless of the level, doesn't quite know it's roles properly, has endured a lot of change down to players in/out and injuries and it will take a little bit of time to sort out.
But on the other hand, a year ago, with a massive financial windfall, we took the opportunity to remodel our entire team around some big championship players who would either develop into PL players or, at least, would be ready for the championship a year on. That we are now at that point and we have probably half of those players with huge question marks about where they fit and even if they do fit, is a scenario we probably shouldn't really be in at this point. Of those 12 signings, only DOS, Townsend and Greaves have clear defined roles in the team (plus Omari and Delap), Cajuste, Ogbene, Szmodics, Clarke, Johnson are all heavily debated, whilst Muric and KP are done with.

Why is there such a debate about the penalty decision?
at 09:29 10 Aug 2025

Four players all jumped for the ball at the same time. I get the argument that players need to use their arms to jump, but all of the other three already had their arms back down and Greaves had already won the header.
Yet Dykes was the only one with an arm still above his head, facing the ball too.
Hard to judge if he did it deliberately, but it was definitely a poorly executed jump if being kind and at the very least, more likely that he realised he wasn't close to the ball so just tried to get as much as he could in Greaves way.
i think they are trying to take interpretation out of these decisions, which means we get some really unfair decisions when it's clearly accidental, but in this case it is definitely much closer to a deliberate attempt anyway so, either way, it's a pen.
