any Leftfield fans out there....?
at 14:03 9 Jul 2025

Underworld massively underrated imho on the basis of that track which is completely different to much of what they did.
It got them popularity and more visibility (and money) of course.

Birmingham just dropped £10m
at 20:02 6 Jul 2025

But equally, he was worth £10m only 6 months ago as a 30 year old- his record at Celtic was phenomenal and regardless of the quality of the league, you only have to look at the standard of the finishing to recognise there is a high level of talent (physique maybe an issue).
If we sign a 28 year old for £15m we would think thats a massive statement of intent. To me, £10m on a 30 year old with his record looks similar.

Totally agree with this- newly promoted teams in great form are exactly the ones you want to avoid early on. The idea it will be easier because they have to bed in new players is probably wishful thinking- they are in a good position that they dont need to throw players in if they arent quite up to speed with things (a bit like we did last year).
Whilst signing 6 players a good month before the season starts suggests that some of them might be ready to go by then anyway.

Questioning the lack of signings...ridiculous
at 19:53 6 Jul 2025

Not sure that suggests that Birmingham have got any particularly sophisticated scouting network. Kyogo should be really well known to anyone with any passing interest in Scottish football (hes been comfortably one of the most talented players in the league for a few years).
And the other players they have signed this summer were all either in England or had been previously.

Is Burnley not a bit of a sideways step?
at 20:40 26 Jun 2025

What slightly puzzles me though is that, if hes prepared to sign a new contract with Burnley as a newly promoted PL club, what was the background to ITFC not doing the same thing in the same circumstances a year ago?
It would likely have given him a signing on fee, a pay rise and a bit of security too.

Edit- I had assumed he had chosen to only extend by a year last year, but perhaps it was our decision. Especially as it seems that Burnley have also only offered him one year. That changes the narrative of this quite a bit, as suggests we are aware he might not be fully fit for all of next year too.

Thing is, the USA isn't all footied out. The PL and CL have been marketed so much that the appetite is there for live games and they don't have them.
So many will line up to pay the hideous costs and watch something that's finally more than just a pre season friendly. Which they also pay a fortune for

Think it might have been different if he got the wingers he wanted in the first place (I think we tried to sign Liam Feeney and had to settle for him on loan later), but as soon as we were exposed at Reading, it felt like he lost all faith in trying to be more expansive. Maybe that was the initial start of the end.
We had lost Jay Tabb, Paul Anderson, Stephen Hunt from the previous season, who played in the wide positions and were very narrow and could defend well too, but we had no-one like that anymore.

Yeah, youre right about Tommy Oar, forget where he ended up but it wasnt back in Australia!

MM was always looking to find a bargain winger and none of them ever seemed to come off.

Fifa, the Club World Cup and Saudi Arabia
at 21:34 14 Jun 2025

I think there is another level beyond that article, because beyond the DAZN money being a bail-out, it looks like a deliberate vehicle to distribute massive sums of money to clubs in smaller markets.
The outcome is likely to be that those markets become ridiculously uncompetitive really quickly. With the result that the clubs wont see any benefit in their domestic leagues, whilst the leagues wont want them because of their domination.
With the likely result that they will be pushed/attracted more to some sort of Fifa Super League, where they get better competition and regular access to that sort of money. And eventually it will leave the European clubs looking on and realising that they are the only ones not in it and decide to jump on board too.

Which basically is a world super league to replace the Champions League, run by Fifa and with Saudi Arabia with a key supporting role (or possibly more than that).

It might not take that long either- its already evident that the Copa Libertadores is completely disrupted by the money the Brazilian teams have in comparison to the other countries and the Brazilian League itself is surely going to start to stratify too.

Always felt the narrative with that team was a little bit skewed and was probably the start of MM starting to become defensive in the media.
Started season with a more open approach with wingers, but we got ripped apart at Reading and MM went back to what he trusted from the previous year, but without the players who actually did it.
Our fixture list gave a false impression too, because in the first half of the season we had all the tough game games with narrow defeats and draws but not many wins, but away we played all of the bottom teams in a row and had a great run of wins.
When that flipped in the second half of the season, we found out we were just bad at home and couldn't beat the poorer teams either, whilst the away form collapsed against better opposition.
It was only winning the last 3 games when everyone was done and on the beach, that got us up to 7th, but in reality we were miles away from play offs.
Our recruitment of wingers didn't help either as don't think AMN was expected to be first choice, but ended up happening because we didn't sign anyone better. And Tommy Oar decided to quit and Fraser got injured.

I think this was the game where Tommy Miller missed his only ever penalty for ITFC.
Only for the ref to ask for it to be retaken and he scored it.

Agree, think hes proved himself to be more than capable for a Championship side in two successive seasons.
Maybe he wants to be able to play week in, week out and be a guaranteed starter, but think he could definitely do that in the championship.

Where does Godfrey rank in worst loan signings?
at 22:03 2 Jun 2025

Most of the answers name players who made a handful of appearances, some who even scored a handful of goals (Stern John, Rory Fallon), so they can hardly be disasters as clearly we had a manager who was prepared to play them and they did enough to warrant playing again.
Its ones like Mark Fish who played no more than a game, or those who didnt play at all that are the disasters.
Even Godfrey managed to get picked a couple of times for a PL team. Even after his poor games with City and Spurs, the fact he got put on against Newcastle says KM thought he could do a job.

Yeah and think he was in really decent form and then got injured. By the time he came back the team had lost all confidence. We were in a bit of a false position that season, as we didnt play all that well at home, but played the stronger teams so it was seen as unlucky, whilst we had this great run of away wins against all of the teams at the bottom of the table.
As soon as the fixture list reversed, it turned out we werent able to beat the poor teams at home either and our away form fell apart too because the games were harder.

Delap may have competition in the form Of Etitike
at 21:51 2 Jun 2025

Wonder what Delaps expectations are at Chelsea- he will know that hes competing with Jackson, but if hes also competing with Ekitike, then that potentially diminishes his game time quite a bit.
Particularly as they still need to offload Nkunku and Giui.

Not sure Sunderland would have been stronger. They already werent anywhere near as good as Sheff United over the course of the season and they likely would have struggled to keep hold of some of their players. Watson has already been sold to Brighton as it is- bet they regret that now.

Are we agreed that whoever loses today, will enjoy next season more?
at 14:44 24 May 2025

Makes no sense to me. If they dont go up, they can see Hamer et al being picked off by the PL clubs, then they are left with this massive pressure to try and get up next season with a weaker team, three stronger clubs coming along to compete with them and the knowledge that their Parachute Payments will run out.
And then, they are potentially competing at levels similar to their rivals Wednesday, hoping to make the play-offs with a rebuild or whatever (see also, Norwich).

The alternative is that they go up, they keep all those players, add some more players, building on the base they put together in the PL last season and they are in a stronger position to have a go at it than they were last time, when they did none of those things.

There arent any clubs who just sit around in the top 6 of the Championship, never going up or down, so it feels like there are only two directions and surely if you support a club you want them to aspire to being the best they can be, even if that is a tough proposition and journey along the way (and lets face it, getting promoted isnt exactly a terrible experience and playing against the best players in the world isnt entirely that either).

McKenna: FFP Limits Promoted Clubs' Ambition
at 22:58 23 May 2025

Thought that was a really sensible suggestion- any promoted team can invest at the same level as an established PL club. So spend is capped at 3 years of PL income, rather than the 1 x L1, 1 x Championship and 1 x PL that we got.
Then when relegated, you get standard Parachute payments.
Would likely mean the extra money would probably need to be spent on 1 year contracts, but if we could have spent another £130m on 6 or so established PL players for a year, it might have made a difference.

Following the JET thread, how about a Town Reprobate XI?
at 22:54 23 May 2025

Think youd be able to name an entire team from players who played for Paul Jewell. Which says everything about the environment he brought to the club. Which I see Cresswell has described as "a proper group of men" in interview with EADT.

Noticed a load of Maidstone fans at St Pancras on Sunday. Seems they were playing Boreham Wood in the National League South play-off final.
When I looked it up I noticed that Boreham were 5th and Maidstone were 7th. They knocked out the 2nd and 3rd placed teams in the semi-final!
