5-0 and we still don't sing

Agree re: positioning. Not sure on the accoustics, dont think that impacts noise coming from North to away fans or vice versa really.

The Wednesday fans were singing "is this a library" literally minutes after the SBR Stand had been singing loudly. This happened several times yesterday and tbh we say this about nearly every away ground and not sure its ever really true there either.
Fans sitting at other end of the ground saying that its quiet is a common theme at several stadiums it seems, but not sure its really such an issue.

TWTD Hive mind - Cape Town advice - Best area to stay
at 00:39 12 Feb 2024

Would echo other suggestions that Waterfront or Camps Bay are great to stay, very safe and plenty of restaurant/bar options.
Rather than say they are "tourist" areas, they are more just popular areas for the locals and tourists.

It's bittersweet watching us falter isn't it?
at 13:04 11 Feb 2024

My perspective on it was that it was great to be involved in a game between two really decent play-off teams, in front of a sold out stadium, where it was really competitive and either team could have won it.
Its just great to be involved in those sort of games and to be more than holding our own- and probably just about deserving to win it.
There are definitely some areas we need to work on and perhaps we are discovering some achilles heels within the squad/system which other teams are smart enough to take advantage of- that might be that individuals who have overperformed for 6 months, might just be finding it a challenge to maintain that.
But we will find solutions, Im sure, whether thats by adjusting the team itself a bit, through coaching etc, or by personnel changes, which might need to wait until the summer.

Without wanting to single out players and make this some sort of scapegoat thing, just being realistic that Woolfenden, Burns, Chaplin, maybe even Luongo found it tough going yesterday in patches. Changes to the team in the short term might give them a welcome break.

Is there a conversation to be had regarding Chaplin not starting now?
at 20:00 23 Jan 2024

Hes got 9 league goals and I think pretty much the same for assists, which is pretty good at just past the halfway point.
He scores/performs in patches and he was red hot during the last 2 months of last season, but not so much before then. He will come into form again soon. As others have said, some of that downturn might be due to the changes in personnel and the general dip of the rest of the team too.

Though this quote from Gary O'Neill was quite a stretch for a player theyve only had at the club for 6 months:

""It’s a big achievement getting a debut in a team and squad as talented as this, when you’re a young lad coming through the academy. I’m pleased for him."

Of the players signed by Cookie "that summer"
at 19:16 11 Jan 2024

I remember thinking at the time that it felt likely that about a third of them would be really good players, a third would be able to do a decent enough job and a third wouldnt be up to it.
Which meant we probably didnt have enough of them to get a decent squad together, given that we were going to get injuries and that we also had several trying to compete for the same position, whilst didnt have enough options in others.
It felt inevitable that first season wasnt going to work too well (despite my optimism that it would). THe realisation that Cook had seemingly no idea how to fit them in and a reluctance to change anything to try and accomodate them, made that even more likely. But to an extent, he was already fighting a bit of an uphill battle- not that that should be any sort of mitigation anyway, since he was the one who decided he wanted to play "demolition man" and blow up the previous squad because he couldnt get anything out of that either.

It wasnt a great strategy for recruitment really, although I suppose it allowed us to spend a year working out which ones were no good and then effectively try and sort it out in the next few windows.

Not sure Fraser was sold at a profit. I thought we paid about £750k for him, but we sold him for about £300k?
I dont think we got a bargain, given the way he had played for MK the previous season, whilst I dont see any reason why Charlton (of all clubs) would have overpaid for a player who we couldnt fit in and wanted to leave.
Then there are the wages too.

Sarmiento....

Its the last bit I wondered about too, I guess they have to be relatively confident hes going to play more than he has done at WBA, but given we are a better functioning team than them and with a player already established in that role, it isnt by any means certain.
From our perspective, that probably doesnt really matter as we just get better squad competition, of course. And he may very well be a better option than anyone we currently have too of course.

Forgive me, for I have sinned..
at 21:28 23 Dec 2023

I didnt sin, but then found that all the trains were delayed back to London, so maybe I should have done.
That last 20 mins or so was not pleasant watching at all. It was like they were just taunting us, waiting to score another when they felt like it. Some of the tricks and flicks they were doing, the oles, it was pretty hard work. Especially when some of our players then went to put in big challenges to sort it out, only to miss and end up with a booking.

I came here looking for this and I was not disappointed.

I particularly liked this line- "But you can bet today will be a turning point where McKenna will not allow this to happen again. For good or for ill", as it has a touch of defiance about it.

Feels a bit like it favours those who keep a very close eye on social media to spot when they go on sale. Other clubs advertise them well in advance and give everyone a reasonable chance.

Current team Vs Burley Play off team
at 20:47 4 Dec 2023

Dont think its a debate currently. Firstly, dont think you can compare the relative athleticism of the teams as every generation of players are fitter than the last as a result of the training/diet etc. So, if you dropped any of those 2000 players into our current squad, they would immediately be much more mobile/faster than they were back then (i.e. even Magilton).
Secondly, the comparison of their individual careers says that the 2000 lot are much better. We dont know the ceiling of a lot of our current players admittedly, but its equally hard to suggest it will exceed many of those in the 2000 squad. Certainly, Morsy, Luongo, Hladcky, Hirst arent going to have careers like Holland, Magilton, Wright or Stewart.

I dont know why they continue to release "on sale" match details so close to the actual date that the on sale starts. Or seemingly so quietly.
Its like they know they cant meet demand, so better not to let too many people know. There is a whole "matches on sale" page on the website that has zero on it, despite three games happening tomorrow.

Let’s talk about the defence

Yeah that is a good point, I was overlooking just how far clear we are right now. You are right, if we collapse to that extent it maybe wouldnt bring quite the level of positivity.

I think we will end up in the play-offs, quite comfortably, then not quite make it. Which is ok (I wont feel like that at the time!).

Was going to say the same thing re: Tuanzebe. He has more experience relative to the others at a high level, but he isnt actually that experienced as a player generally. There is a point where a mass of lower league experience probably counter acts a small amount of experience at a high level.
And there is a reason that he isnt at that higher level too. I think the general concensus is that, with time, his background suggests he will be better than the others (dont disagree with that), but Im not sure we should rush into getting him going asap because its inevitable. Just let it take it course- as you say, he will inevitably play more games between now and xmas and if he shows he should keep his place by that point on merit, then perfect. I dont think we should try and force it, in the expectation it will fix our defensive issues.
The games are exciting, we are winning them and there is a bit more jeopardy to them than we would all like, but on the whole we probably just need to enjoy the ride and see where it takes us. To the OP point, keep expectations relatively low- if we end up 8th this season, we will be perfectly placed to go further next season and will llikely have attracted some excellent additions in January/Summer too.

Loved it, so much good stuff going on at the club. Only thing that struck me was just how many of the players knew the words (they surely arent all fans) which made me wonder if they had practised it beforehand?

Im surprised that Seat Geek dont already do it. I wrote to the club about this when they came in and asked if they would offer any facility to swap seats for a game, or make it available for transfer and they said it was something that was in the pipeline.

Can anyone explain what bizarre instructions these linesmen are on?
at 20:42 12 Sep 2023

There is a logic to it, but it means the linesman wont put his flag up at all for anything now. So large amount of play take place, which the ref wont add back on again, for play that is essentially dead. And everyone knows it.
Equally, what happens in one of those bits of play if a player puts in a desperate late tackle, causes a serious injury (either to himself or the opposition player) for something that wasnt actually live anyway.
