One Game at a Time ( Argyle v Ipswich)
at 15:53 1 Mar 2024

Hello again

So I am still cranking out the previews for Argyle games.

The link takes you to the one for Saturday, and it doesn't once use the M word :) and I don't mean Mariner.

Not saying it doesn't make any reference, but your poster who said in another thread that Morsy is the kind of player you love in your team and hate in the oppositions is bang on....

So will it be five in a. row for Town or three in a home row against them for Argyle.

Recent history says it should be a great game either way....safe travels to those coming down.

All the best after tomorrow. I think Leicester are gone despite their wobbles but there is nothing better than the sound of "Leeds are falling apart again" in then play-offs. And to be honest after doing four of these preview for Town I need some fresh subjects!

Take three clubs......(not a golf thread)

Bear with me as to why an Argyle fan would post this on here

Ipswich...US VC owned , highish budget, well regarded and clearly excellent coach, regular 25K+ crowds and riding deservedly high in the table, strong squad, score goals and win regularly

Argyle....single fan owned ( with minority outside investors...some of which jumped ship when Leeds were available), wealthy but not super-rich, on a course to break even, so lowest budget in the league for wages , investment channeled at player /facility development, excellent coach, as close to the play-offs as to relegation. 16K crowds due to ground capacity but looking at ways to increase. Score goals but lose more than they win

Wednesday Single owner, ground mortgaged, new ( 3rd) coach of the season, unproven at club level , late paying HMRC, players not paid/paid late (tbc), 20k+ crowds, rock bottom but just had first win. Struggle to score.

In each case my question to the owners would be ...why?

Obviously I am familiar with Simon Hallet at Argyle. he is a fan, he wanted to build a community asset, he has always said he cannot fund an EPL club and would seek outside investment, but that he wanted to build a sustainable Championship club....so far he has delivered all he has promised and whilst not a ceiling a such, we would as a club be content to retain Championship status and gain access to the improved revenue streams that come with it.

Gamechanger intrigue me. They are an investment fund so presumably they want to turn a profit on every investment ( but recognise some won't.) How do they do that from Ipswich....it either has to be from revenues increasing because of promotion, but unless you invest heavily on going up, assuming you do, that means it is a one year Blackpool style promotion....or player sales ( Argyle have already signalled that as they bought Whittaker and Mumba through an internal player fund...so effectively a percentage of any sales fees gets reinvested and the rest becomes the fund profit....)

So is there an exit plan for Gamechanger....or are they going to buck the trend and be a successful and profitable EPL club?

Wednesday are the one I would be worried to support. High budget, low achievement ( in that they have merely returned to where they were but are struggling to stay there so far), no apparent long term strategy ( unless you count lifetime season tickets). Ageing squad ( something that is also applicable to sections of the Town squad but clearly being addressed in a window by window basis). Owner & fans disconnected completely, on the slippery slope financially of antagonising HMRC? If you want to buy Wednesday and someone might, you would wait for the disaster to strike and drive the price down...ground is an issue but not insurmountable.

So three clubs that shared a promotion, three models of ownership, three currently very different trajectories.

I'd be interested to get a Blues perspective on my take on your owners.....and how that pans out if you get promoted....or if you don't.

Shame we scored three at PR and still lost....my concern for us is we need to improve the defensive side of the squad...we have several injuries and it looks like whilst Gibson is a find we need some more nous at the back and some steel in the middle...but gut feel is we will be Ok this season and will build again....

Good luck against Fulham....

One Game at a Time :You're Only here for the Pasties
at 14:16 27 Oct 2023

Hello, hello

It has been a while but it would be rude not to pop back and congratulate you on a really splendid start to the season....

Ours has been a curates egg, the better we play the less well the results seem to go...our second and third ( and probably fourth) best wins came from not very convincing performances. Our best away performances all ended in defeats....

And then there was Norwich :)

So other than the Brizzle disaster ( and that was a massively changed side which is not likely to be relevant to tomorrow) our away form is pretty tight and we could just as easily be on eighteen points.

Still ifs buts and maybes don't win league title ( don't have to tell you guys that) and I think we will be fine with staying up and investing the new TV money next season.

As some of you may remember I write a review/preview piece on Pasoti called One Game at a Time. This season is season 2 so we have gone all Netflix and so it is OGAAT You're Only here for the Pasties.

It is obviously written from an Argyle perspective, and all in good sport (honest).....but if you want to read up on the Curse of the Cats this Halloween weekend, and which Ipswich player is most likely to be wearing a Ghostface mask then here's the link.

https://pasoti.co.uk/threads/one-game-at-a-time-runners-up-a-october-28th.125503

Enjoy the Mariner Derby ( hopefully not too much) and we will no doubt speak after the weekend.

Cheers

All quiet on the Western Front
at 13:20 4 Aug 2023

So I thought I would pop by and wish you all the best for the Brave New World of the Championship.

Genuinely I hope all the three promoted sides have good seasons....it was an epic League 1 last season and this season will be a challenge.

From our side I detect optimism tinged with realism.

From your side I detect optimism tinged with confidence.

From Wednesday I detect pessimism tinged with relief they have finally signed some players.

So parking the pseudo rivalry until we play each other have a great season.....and see you all for the Paul Mariner derby.

Now I need to get back to refreshing Pasoti every thirty seconds as apparently we are signing someone today.....

Rip Jayden
at 11:56 24 May 2023

It is with great sadness I have to let you know that young Jayden, the Argyle fan stricken by a brain tumour has passed away.

Town fans were most generous with both their support and financial contribution to the Gofundme page that helped Jaydens family deal with the treatment Jayden received and also allowed him to build some memories to sustain them now he has gone.

Thanks to those Town fans who sent their best wishes and who contributed and also those who enquired as to his progress.

See you next season.

Thanks for the banter and conversations and your generosity to Jayden

Oh just for synergy we will try and make sure our winner is late and deflected I know you would t want it any other way

Well played indeed!

At least we now know what it felt like for you when we didn't blow a gasket at Exeter and Shrewsbury ...

Two away games that looked like if you were going to trip up, they would be them. Two three nil wins. Plus sixty goal difference.

I can only imagine the carnage on Owlstalk.

Chapeau!

It is going to be a very good weekend for both clubs I believe.

And frankly Leif Davies should have been L1 Player of the year.....what a player. I hope you got him on a long deal as I think there will be some prep clubs circling in the summer.

Some of you will have seen I occasionally post here on the ( probably temporary) rivalry between our clubs as we challenge for promotion.

Yesterday I had a private message from an Ipswich TWTD member suggesting I should post something that has appeared on the Argyle board recently. I am doing so and appreciate his consideration and thoughtfulness and generosity of spirit.

Some things are bigger than football. I think this is one of them. This young man could have been any clubs supporter. He happens to be a Green.

https://www.gofundme.com/f/jaydens-dreams-come-true-through-his-dipg-journey?utm

It is a tough read and as any parent will know, every parents worst nightmare.

The club have reached out and Jayden and his brother have been invited to be mascots for a future game.

Many individuals and the Pasoti Good Deeds Fund have also made contributions to help Jaydens family make his memories for as long as he can.

I recognise that there are almost certainly other clubs fans who will experience similar issues. As I say, I was asked to post this by a Town fan, and so in the spirit of friendship and respect between the clubs I am doing so.

I appreciate your time in reading this and for anyone who feels moved to respond in any way to help Jayden I thank you on his families behalf.

Now live on Pasoti at https://pasoti.co.uk/threads/one-game-at-a-time-cheltenham-town-h-january-21st.1

A highly blinkered view of the game last week, two fine goals and one horrendous miss....

At least it looks like we can stop squabbling over Morgan now :)

All together now

A little bit of Bali from the right
A very slight deflection in the flight
An equaliser nestling in the net
And David Wagner met us from our jet...

As promised, a link to the second match preview for the divisions game of the season, so far.

Obv. it covers the transfer windows of the respective teams, some history on how bad we are at Portman Road and some other bits...

Oh sorry, just realised I misread my Radio Times cast list for Last King of Scotland.

BTW would it be possible to get all the Whittaker threads merged to save us Argyle visitors some time?

He played a blinder today....and realistically I can't see Swansea recalling him now especially with the game at PR coming up....that would really mess with his head.

Still a long old season....nothing is decided yet...

See you in a fortnight

A View from the Opposition
at 15:43 26 Sep 2022

After such kind words from a number of you on my little diversion on the game on Pasoti I thought I would offer up an admittedly TV based opinion of Sunday.

First of all kudos to the travellers amongst you and many thanks for an impeccably observed tribute to Ciderman Dave Smith...much appreciated.

As for the game well the boys on Sky duty seemed to like it...

Ladapo scoring was inevitable.....as soon as I saw his name on the team sheet I knew we needed two.

As for the Morsy tackle...well he has already broken one Argyle player ( Bolton last season) and that was a red card....

Evans could have gone as well, although I doubt he would have done the second challenge he got actually booked for if the one he should have had before pretending to be fouled by Edwards had happened.

The Mumba foul on Donacien was yellow/red borderline. I think he got away with it because the ref followed the ball and so didn't see the challenge...certainly that is how it looked for me ...but it was naughty.

Morsy seems to like playing on the edge....after the first goal he barged into Wilson from behind apparently...I guess he hopes to provoke a reaction. He may well be marked man with referees for a while now. He is such a good player but his tackling is going to end some poor sods career one day.

The Chaplin Houghton foul before the equaliser. definitely a foul. But thank goodness the ref played advantage rather than giving us the pen :) Chaplin was looking for Houghton trying to buy a free kick. Sometimes they get given but I felt play on was the right call ( you will be unsurprised to hear)

After the equaliser which was in my mind against the run of play there was only one team going to win it.

Great strike by Whitaker. His best game for us. When he started he seemed to want to beat the world and never pass....Schumacher has got him head up and playing well.

Our two leading scorers ( Hardie/Azaz) were out so we now have goals all round the team. Your press was excellent for sixty seventy minutes and we had to make a change to turn things round but Schumacher is gaining a reputation for being able to do that. Certainly more than Ryan Lowe ever managed....

Ennis looks like he pulled something....he played well and what a sub by Schumacher to bring on a 17 yo for his league debut to help see the game out. Will Jenkins-Davies. Thoughts are he will be some player. He almost beat three to get away toward the end....

I think Cooper clawed out the ball after Walton hit the bar. If so a fantastic stop and I for one thought it was in when he headed it. Walton had a good game generally. I was not too convinced by him previously but he was decent.

Naturally delighted with the win. I think it is consistently this season that we can go a goal down but heads don't drop...they seem to have a collective belief in the system. Acid test this weekend as we go to Why-come wanderers, a team who live rent free in the heads of Argyle fans .....every chance we will lose there but we travel optimistically for once.

Although a draw would be the best result for us I hope you hammer Pompous and Dastardly and Muttley Cowley.

Thought your left back was a class act too.

Overall hard fought, two good teams, and all three results were possible and plausible.

Suspect when we rock up to PR in January it will still be a top four game...I certainly hope so.

The One Game at a Time thread on Pasoti for our trip to the Adams Park Family has a pun laden highly biased review of the match if that isn't too soon.

Argyle fan in peace ( as I believe is the correct form)
at 13:08 21 Mar 2022

Greetings,

So in advance of Paul Mariner day, which I am gutted to be missing, I wanted to test the temperature of where you think the play offs will land after your somewhat unfortunate draw at Oxford.

Of all our remaining games and we have some toughies I think the trip to PR is the one I would happily snap your hand off for a draw. Your defensive form is unreal ( as is ours by and large) although we seem to have the edge on attacking/goalscoring but despite winning 4-0 on Saturday the consensus was we were not that good and the scoreline flattered us.

This is written before we play Cheltenham which I hope delivers is a scabby 1-0 or whatever we need to take our haul to 74 before we hike cross country to you guys.

My gut is that 7/7 wins is what you need and that's not impossible but seems improbable. I have a suspicion I know how we will set out our stall and I am sure your coaching team will have an idea of how to combat it as well, so I would expect a cagey game, first goal being all important.

There is a cluster of green super optimists who think we can gatecrash the automatics....which I again think is possible but unlikely, so my prediction in the playoffs will be MK Us Wendies and either Oxford or Wycombe. The only thing that might change at the top end is if Rotherhams fixture mash up in April causes them to drop more points and MK continue their remarkable
form.

Sunderland obviously still have a shot but have to visit us and Oxford. Whycome have a simpler run in and is the second most problematic fixture for us as they do seem to have a thing about us ( and our fans rise to the bait every time).

Given your defensive strength is that at the expense of attacking verve or do you simply have a new style being coached that suits the players? Is Morsy fit? I commented on the Oxford forum ( which I have found d surprisingly welcoming and not remotely salty on my visits) that Morsy is the player that all footballing sides wish they had when they come up against them....does the dog work and has a nasty streak, but can play too. I saw he subbed on at the weekend, so I guess he is being managed but if this one is sh*t or bust for you then I presume you want him in?

I hope the Wendies continue to implode as I think they are the most problematic of the teams we might face in the play offs , plus it will keep the Yorkshire Samaritans in chip butties.....

Suffice to say we are happy to still be in contention and in form....even if our Chairman has indicated that going up might be a bit too soon financially but if we do he might play his ukulele naked in Union Street. That has to be worth a point or two!

Obviously I wish you well after Saturday. We will try and decapitate the Oxford challenge the following week, all the more so if you beat us.

Two of the best young coaches in the league going head to head......nil nil then :)

Witty/Humorous Player Nicknames

Plymouth fan in peace here

On holiday I started looking at player nicknames and am on a mission to find the best/most apt and hunourorus nicknames past and present.

So I have a Split Pin, a Raspberry, a pair of pre war centre halves known as Death and Glory as well as the obvious One Size and Kris Musampa....

Also interested to know if every club has a Beast a Psycho and or. aTrigger

Look forward to the Town response and don't forget we have just broken the Norwich keeper...he was excellent though!!
