Interview with Bart
at 06:31 7 Feb 2020

The sadness is the divisions, particularly evident on here and exemplified in this thread. I was pleased that Mick left. In my view the right man when he arrived, who overstayed, by a year and a bit. Was he a bad man no. Was he doing his best absolutely. The awful abuse I hear he was subjected to is a blight on us.

What has the period since he left brought, relegation, two managers and to be honest football that is generally poor and seemingly without strategic direction. Are we better off without him. Probably not. Was I wrong, well the evidence suggests I was, but i would not now be attending if mick has stayed.

I’d like to believe that those who come on here want the best for the club. It seems we can’t discuss how to achieve that without shouting down the other person’s view. It’s my way or the Stevie Heighway.

If you’re are not willing to listen to other people’s point of view then yours is probably a view not worth reading. But you will still write it, and TWTD will continue to get bogged down with drivel like that.

Nicest ever Town players
at 20:22 29 Jan 2020

Spent an hour with Tony Mowbray in Darlington when he was our skipper. He was such a gentleman, and articulate, intelligent, and looked as hard as nails. He wrote about meeting me in his weekly evening star or EADT column

Also met Matty Holland in stansted whilst travelling to Dublin for a weekend. Flight was delayed due to fog, and we exchanged memories of his time with the town, and where the club was at the time. Again a gentleman.

Both shared the quality of being very grounded.

Think I just saw the chain of satellites pass over Suffolk’s sky at 6 this morning. Looked spooky.

We looked good for the first 25 mins at MK. Then Norwood went off, and we lost control of the game, and were lucky to hold on.

Whilst it has been great to get the bond back between fans and club, Herbivore is absolutely correct in wanting a system, and decent performances. we have been awful for far too long now. Herbivore may not agree with me, but I would say 3 and a half seasons of dross, including this one thus far.

I assume the same as you. It’s a forum, where we come to discuss football. That’s a genuinely held belief. I could be wrong. But it’s what TWTD is for

I’ve said it before, when you drop Skuse, then we will improve. To be fair, I’m not confident of that under lambert. Tactically bereft.

What was the worst performance you’ve ever seen at Portman Road?
at 08:16 27 Dec 2019

I wanted Mick gone, but he had a (awful to watch) system. I don’t know what system we are playing whilst watching a game. We should be setting up to dominate teams, but yesterday was tactically inept. We made another team look decent.

A powderpuff midfield, devoid of confidence, creativity, belief and a system is where I would start. My grandma could outmuscle any one of the four on the park yesterday. This is a robust league, and teams are generally setting up to stop us, and then realising we aren’t all that. That is a very poor engine room. Utter garbage.

Comparison
at 12:40 15 Dec 2019

a personal view. McCarthy came when we were then at our lowest ebb, turned things round massively, and then almost took us up. Things then started to slowly fade, and his football became effective, dull but would no doubt have seen us in the championship even now. I was glad he went, and would have stopped going had he seen out his contract.

Lambert arrived when we were in a similar position. He went down without much of a whimper, and despite a fantastic start to the season, is delivering generally poor performances, lacks a defined system and team selection, and is doing all that in a league where we have significantly greater resources than our competitors.

I think lambert needs to quickly find a settled team, an attractive and effective football style, or I’ll be listening to more talk of be careful of what you wish for.

Skim read the thread. Agree on a number of points made. Jackson has been good this season, and certainly has been significantly better than the profligate Norwood. Kenlock and Edwards have gone backwards, and yes other than Vincent-Young and Garbutt, we lack effective wide players. I’d love us to get in the lad who played left back for Posh in the league game. Think he came from Lowestoft via Kings Lynn.

Thought he played well today, and was very much a threat. He created a couple of chances including the goal, and linked well throughout the game.

I agree on that point by the way. I don’t think Cole can be expected to suddenly play in a different position, and I don’t think he is responsible for today’s outcome

Lambert

Whilst we started the season fantastically in terms of results, I have worried about just about every performance. Wimbledon was a perfect example, where we were terrible but stumbled on 3 points with the last 15 mins glossing over abject football. I don’t see a system, I don’t see creativity, and whilst his PR is champions league, his tactical nous during games, his constant changing of players and systems from game to game, and the lack of creativity on the pitch is non league. He appears out of his depth to me, without Culverhouse

Cole Skuse
at 20:40 14 Dec 2019

I realise they are the words you have heard and are not yours but ‘great range of passing’. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

If playing a wall pass back to a centre back, or a sideways pass to anybody is a great range of passing, then yep he is your man.

he is very decent at breaking up the opposition, but is awful as a centre midfielder when we have the ball. He very rarely plays a one touch attacking pass, slows us down hugely when we are in possession, and is scared of his own shadow when in the final third.

Centre midfield is the fulcrum of your team. When Skuse goes, then we might start to play the sort of football which will break down the opposition. How many times have we done that?

Cole Skuse

Dont think you will get a consensus and I dont know that one is necessary.

The fulcrum of the team has to be the centre of midfield. As somebody has highlighted Skuse regularly abdicates responsibility when taking the ball from a defender by playing a wall pass back to them. I also find that he slows our play down, by regularly taking two touches rather than looking to play a first time ball. He rarely carries the ball forward, and commits an opposition player.

These are all things I feel Downes can do, and is why I believe he is a better option, particularly as he can break the opposition up. Not yet as well as Skuse I agree, but he will improve. I also think you should not look to pair Skuse and Downes at Portman Road, where the onus is on us to break down the opposition. We have struggled too often at home to create sufficient chances, and I believe that central midfield engine room is the basis of the problem.

When we finally pair a decent attacking option with either Skuse or Downes (I would definitely go for the latter), then I think we will start to play decently. By the by, I thought we did well first half last night, and I thought Cole had a decent enough game. He has also had a fairly decent season in that defensive midfielder role. As has Downes, but we cannot perform well (IMO) when both play together. I would suggest the performances have generally not matched the results.

Is it usual
at 20:43 6 Nov 2019

It’s a forum, for fans to debate. Whilst we have achieved great results, and are currently riding high, I don’t think we have played anywhere near as well as I had hoped. Sunderland 1st half, Tranmere 2nd half, and MK Dons first 20 mins have been sustained periods of football. I don’t think we would do any better next year in the championship than we did last year, unless there are changes. So I believe that people are entitled to raise issues with players they believe are not part of the solution.
