This is a very interesting read good thread you started taximan.
Myself I set out on an IT career which has seen me work in programming, support, sys admin and now cyber security. Ive been able to move around and enjoyed a stint in Melbourne (was MelbourneVicBlue) Australia for some years, missing the Paul Jewell and early Mick years.
One question for all the business owners and self-employed out there.. would you recommend it for everyone? and is it best left until little kids are older?

Left school at 16, worked on a plant nursery, spent a year at horticultural college, more time spent at various nurseries around the UK, 5 years growing mushrooms, good money but tedious, left to manage a garden centre, started as a self employed gardener 8 years ago. Love it, never going to be rich, but working in the great outdoors & for some really nice people is so satisfying. Can see why Benters is enjoying his new found career so much.
Thanks ba its great isnt it !
But if you had told me 10 yrs ago id have my own gardening round and all that.

Interesting point. I have only worked under a boss for 5 years of my life. I hate authority and couldn't handle someone trying to tell me what to do when I obviously knew better! That said, do you know what? I sort of wish I'd been a wage slave in a way. Having your own business isn't all it's cracked up to be. Anxiety, stress, where do you go from here feelings. Mind you I suppose the grass is always greener. It can be a lonely place having your own business. I'm tired.

Indeed, pro's and con's. Like some have mentioned they've done here, retiring from large firm with pension saved and house paid, work for self can be done later in life too... For my generation and the millenials too, perhaps doing that is the way it'll have to be..

I've done 45 years as a Chartered Surveyor. The first 7 years in the Civil Service, then 23 in private practice in Central London, mostly for the world's largest company, so highly structured it was almost as rigid as the CS. Made redundant , took enough of my instructions with me to start my own practice near home, so I swapped 4 hours a day commuting for an office a mile away.
I went from a senior-ish position in the world's largest firm to being the world's smallest (ie just me). I was completely my own boss (except for the requirements of the job), nobody to tell me what I could or couldn't do. Apart from what the bast@rds did to my pension, redundancy was the best thing that happened to me in the 45 years.
The advice I would give anyone thinking of being self-employed is (1) get a good accountant, (2) look after your cash-flow, ie don't spend money unnecessarily and (3) make sure you keep the work coming in, don't just concentrate on the work in hand.
A timelapse I took whilst transiting the Suez Canal. The reason it is shaking at times is because my helmsman was pretty terrible. At one point I had to intervene to stop him from steering us into the bank of the canal...

OK, me first.
Are you a paperboy?
Alas no. I'm an accountant, but specialise in foreign taxes.
Job satisfaction isn't exactly great "here's your tax bill" <groan> "and here's my bill" <groan> few people appreciate that their tax would have been higher had they not sought professional advice.
Still, it's interesting enough and I can just about live on the wage, times are hard though, still can't afford a new car relying on hand me downs etc.

I try to stop drug and vaccine companies screwing up for a living. Been in the industry for 21 years, and doing this sort of thing for the last 15-ish.
I'd rather been an indianna jones type explorer though.

You sound like the accountant on Monty Python who wanted to be a lion tamer.
I am a Director of an IFA firm in Dorset. I personally work on the mortgage and protection side of the business. I also have a second business with Telecom plus, trading as Utility Warehouse.
So I help people buy their house, protect against things going wrong, and also help people reduce their outgoings on essential utilities/bills.
Could never go back employed, it's been 16 years self-employed.
