What sort of player are/were you? 12:50 - Mar 20 with 17362 viewsRobTheMonk

Let's have something a little different. If you've ever played football what sort of player were you? Position, strengths, weaknesses etc.

I started as a goalkeeper but had a plethora of shoulder dislocations which has curtailed that. I now mainly play 5/6 a side.

Strengths - Both footed. Good passer. Good first touch.

Weaknesses - Slow. Stamina. Shooting in game - in warmup they fly in haha!

Bloke who ran my team said of me 'you've got a lovely footballing brain BB, it's just a shame that you've got such terrible footballing feet'.

I used to be a good finisher, but now I can't finish for toffee - am not sure when that changed.

Strengths - Decent on the ball, good vision, good passing.

Weaknesses - As weak as a kitten, a wimp, and slow.

Luke Hyam/Lee Cattermole type. No particular footballing talent whatsoever but I could run around and kick a lot of people. I enjoyed it

My hobbies include being quiet during trips, clapping with songs, and diabetes.

Mal-coordinated and over-enthusiastic utility player, and 5-a-side specialist

Strengths: Size (6'3"), enthusiasm, hard shot, decent header of ball, very good shoulder-to-shoulder, Zidane turns (double two-footed dragbacks), score more goals than you'd think

Weaknesses: Size (14+ stone), enthusiasm, erratic shots, lack of coordination, doesn't pass enough, cramps up after 80 minutes or so, back prone to going "ping", overuse of Zidane turns

I started out as a centre back/right back from like under 7's to under 12's. When we moved to full size goals, our keeper left and I ended up in goal and have played there ever since.

Left my team at under 15 level, had a couple of years off and then started playing Sunday morning football when I was 17. We packed up a couple of years ago because it just got quite boring to be honest (we spent about 5 years going up and down the leagues). We have started up again on Monday nights at Gainsborough sports centre. 11 a side, 25 minutes a half, seems a lot more fun and enjoyable now.

Strengths - I'd say I was a decent shot stopper.
Weaknesses - Wasn't great on crosses.

Mark Hughes was the player I aspired too. Even used to get my mate to cross the ball high so I could replicate his trademark scissor kick. Great feeling when they came off. Sore shoulder when they didn’t.

I started as a left winger and then converted to centre forward - although I played left back for one team and didn't enjoy it.

I guess I would play midfield now although I would probably have a panic attack if I looked at a football these days.

A good few years back my mate asked me to turn out for his pub team so I got all excited and dug my trusty Adidas Santiagos out. As I was warming up one kid from my own team said "Nice boots Grandad"

Right footed left back, the right back in our team was very good so I was accomdated in at left back. Hated as the opposition would close me down on my inside meaning I either had to bend one down the line with the outside of my right foot or put my left right through the ball and hope for the best.

Played 27 seasons for my village team.

Started off as a right winger (was electric fast but hadn't developed a football brain, never looked up, bit of a headless chicken)

Moved to centre forward (again very quick, fox in the box, didn't need a football brain, just tapped in rebounds and parries by the hatful).

Got slower, moved back to right wing (could still beat my marker and put decent crosses in the box).

Next to centre back (pace was definitely going but football brain now developed, could read the game and found it very easy). Generally dropped off the line at appropriate time so lack of pace not exposed. Would pick the ball down and play out from the back whilst versions of the younger me ran round like headless chickens.

Bizarrely spent the last 2 seasons back at centre forward (generally as a number 9, back to goal most of the time, holding the ball and laying off to the young whipper-snappers - many of whom were by now the children of the guys I started playing with).

Given it up now - miss it, can't even bring myself to watch the team.....

Strengths - football brain, could pick a pass, got stuck in, not greedy.

Weaknesses - crap at shooting, crap in the air, not greedy enough.

Started out as centre back then played up front in mid teens when starting in men’s football, scored a few goals and then reverted back to centre back late teens. The next 10 years saw me play anywhere down the middle, played couple seasons centre midfield before going back to centre back where I stayed until illness stopped me playing altogether.

On my day the complete footballer.... the rest of the time pretty average. Plenty of heart just lacked something not quite sure what though!!

I could play anywhere but started right mid and then centre mid or forward. My best position was as a number 10. I was excellent in the air but only 5'10 and I lacked any real pace. Played senior football for most of my life and had a spell at ridgeon level but tended to prefer to play locally as part of a very good side where I could be a primadonna. Awful disciplinary record let me down with some rather lengthy bans. The dodgy knee didn't help. I could play anywhere on the park and often would also fill in at centre back or keeper. 38 now and could still play reasonable local level if fit but retired around 32. I loved playing so much and miss it terribly.

Often a utility man as had the footballing brain to understand how to play each role (with varying success). Preferred centre-forward or centre defensive midfield.

Strengths - tall (6' 4 1/2"), good for getting a head on crosses, comfortable with both feet, deceptively neat footwork for a big guy, good long range shot, decent passing ability, good awareness and all-round footballing brain

Weaknesses - Peter Crouch-itis (always taller than everyone else so never learnt how to properly challenge for the ball in the air, and thus pretty naff at aerial challenges when the ball's dropping straight down), slow, lack of stamina, lack of composure in front of goal, general lack of confidence prevents being able to translate impressive training performances onto the pitch when the day comes

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

I've played more or less every position at some point but my best position was number 10. I am/was a pretty decent finisher so could get a few goals but I'm not quick or big so not suited to playing right up top, but I'm good at creating space and picking a pass so used to get a fair few assists.

Think Graham Harbey but with less ability, pace etc.

Most of career spent at left back, but I think my best football was played at centre back despite being a tad too short to play there.

Strengths; Two footed, football "brain", good first time passer, never say die attitude!

Weaknesses; Everything else, slow, lack of fitness, short, awful first touch when intention was to have a second touch, football "brain" beer body... [the brain knew what to do, the body simply couldn't do it every time]

By surrounding myself with younger, fitter, quicker team mates won more trophies in my mid-late 40s than in 20s [7 a side and by now in goal]

Goalkeeper

Strengths = shot stopping like a boss, good reach for diving saves, pretty handy at 1 on 1's.
Weakness = kicking a dead ball. (goal kicks) - just barely able to get it out the area, gave myself sciatica practising :(
