At least Starmer's given an honest and decent answer on the train strikes (support the right to strike, but doesn't want this strike right now) unlike Nandy who is attempting the cake and eat it routine: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/jun/09/labour-frontbencher-lisa-nandy-c

Sorry, a bit by the by and you probably disagree with him, but it would have been easier to say what she did.

Obvious follow up for Starmer is: when is the right time for industrial action?

I think Nandy is closer to the truth although the public need to see workers' rights and conditions much more as a society issue.

What a particularly stupid, cheap dig at Diane Abbott - she got some figures wrong once, so in your view that makes her worse than the tories you love who serially lied, broke the law, bunged billions to their mates for T&T, PPE which then had to be scrapped because it was unfit for purpose as those companies had no experience of manufacture for that market etc.

You've certainly exposed yourself as a bigoted fool, not just trolling, with that post.

You forgot to add that Abbott was suffering from a hypo as she is diabetic.

Patel's numbers in the No 10 press briefing during Covid were in front of her and she mucked that up!

Both Patel and Abbott are cr@p though aren't they, no need to see who is worse when neither are close to being up to one of the great offices of state

I think it counters the persistent "imagine Abbott..............." comments made by our right-wing friends as if no senior Tory would do such a thing.

Agree with your last bit, but not Nandy being closer to the truth: given revenue's down, extra money for pay can only come from the GOvt / taxes / out of the pocket of train travelers who are likely to be less well paid than train workers (i would guess) and more skint.

If I were Starmer, my answer to your first question would be: when they've proven their case is noble and that they've exhausted the negotiations option.

There's never any money until there is.

Why do you think they have to prove the "nobility" of their cause or that they haven't been negotiating already?

Its all a bit sketchy, but from I’ve read there have hardly been any negotiations yet, although I’m not sure who’s fault that is (being honest).

Money is limited — if the govt puts in more on top of the £16b they’ve already put in to the rail industry, that means less can be spent elsewhere. Or taxes go up which could leave less well off people in even more financial trouble than many already face.

The nobility of the cause is obviously subjective and I’m obviously very biased having ranted about this for years. However, a quick google tells me that Train worker salaries (not just drivers) average in the 50s, Nurses, in the 30s, Policemen in the 20s, firefighters in the 30s and teacher sin the very early 30s.

I would ask where the nobility is in a strike that seeks to make relatively comfortable people, more comfortable still, when there are far better causes out there?

My son is very pro labour and like you a very strong Starmer supporter.

He didnt get 'my issue' him until he watched the Blair/Brown series on BBC afterwhich he said as good as he is Starmer isnt a 'front man'

Unfortunately for Labour and the country the one guy who could 'front' Labour is Alan Burnham who has now been (whether by his choice or others) marginalised

Neatly summarised by your son, he's put his finger on it there.

I thought Burnham said he didn't want the leadership - I don't know why, and whether it was because of a temporary situation or intended to be permanent - and took himself away from Wetminster. I'd love him to return as an MP & leader, as I know many others would too!

Nothing emptier than a party stripped of power, unable to effect any change whatsoever because they're permanently in opposition.

Politics isn't done via theory; in real life it requires compromise - people like Wilson, Benn (& son now) & John Smith knew that.

I disagree, and think there is a definitive need to see who is worse. Otherwise we end up in the "they're all as bad as each other" swings and roundabouts nonsense which plays right into the hands of the likes of Patel.

I'm not a fan of all as bad as each other talk, as that normally is seen along lines of they are all at it etc, more just on what is seeming basic competence.

I've no doubt Abbott is a better person than Patel, with better morals, but I don't think either are competent enough (at this stage of career) to be ina great office of state. Abbott may have been once upon a time, I doubt Patel ever will be

You don't seem to realise that that definition of "insanity" would just as easily apply to your own idealistic tracts on here over the years though!

What's most hampered Labour over recent years is that the party & its electorate are split, while the #ToryCriminalsUnfitToGovern somehow manage to remain united when it comes to elections.

"United we stand ..." etc.

You could be contributing, at least via your writing, to helping get Labour as it currently is, elected, instead of being one of those always driving a wedge further into the division & thereby reducing its chances.

But I hate Labour as it currently is. Totally inadequate.

And I honestly don’t think you know what you’re talking about re: driving a wedge and who’s actually doing that. That’s been going on from 2015, and even after with Starmer elected, they’re still trying to marginalise socialist/social democrat voices.

Starmer was elected as a unity candidate ... at least that was what he said along with everything else he lied about.

So I’ll keep pointing out the dishonesty, authoritarian tendencies, lack of principles and the void where genuine policies should be. The last thing we need are cosmetic alternatives to a status quo that hasn’t been working for decades, and end up being outflanked by right-wing populism feeding off that failure and the resulting socio-economic imbalances.

Feel free to wave an extra red flag for me.

I know I'm not as politically sophisticated as some, but am perfectly capable of spotting the bleedin obvious from tens of thousands of tweets, vox pops, radio & TV interviews, discussions, candidates' agents door-stepping etc - ie that former labourites were completely alienated by Corbyn, would never vote for him, & that a sizeable chunk of the labour electorate (incl. yourself) have not only been talking down Starmer since he was elected leader, but actually campaigning against him.

Basically, that's damaging Labour chances & helping enable the tories.
