Clegg: I'm Still Backing Keane
Clegg: I'm Still Backing Keane
Monday, 29th Mar 2010 09:00

Chief executive Simon Clegg has insisted that manager Roy Keane still has his backing despite continuing speculation that the Blues boss is set to lose his job. Several reports this morning claim Keane will be dismissed as soon as this week.

Clegg said: “I'm still fully committed to Roy Keane. It has been a disappointing season, but Roy is still building his team.

“I understand there have been some speculation stories, but Roy is just starting out to get us where we want to be.”

Meanwhile, speculation regarding Keane and the Celtic job vacated by Tony Mowbray last week also continues in this morning’s papers.

Rosenior on a long term deal? Madness. He couldnt pass the bottom of my stairs, let alone find another blue shirt.

It's all well and good Marcus Evan's puppet coming out to support the man he wanted to replace Magilton (if you believe conspiracy theories it was Clegg's decision to appoint Keane, not Evans) but I want to know what our illustrious owner actually thinks. Surely it's time for one of his yearly letters to come out via the press in support for his manager?

Changing manager now would set us back another season - what we have now is very much Roy Keane's team, another manager would then most likely 'rebuild' that and wait another season for it to gel (or not).

For those who don't see any improvement under Keane, how many of the 11 who played against Norwich in Jim's last game in charge could anyone have seen hacking it in the Prem? (with the obvious exception of Gio):
R Wright, Thatcher, Pim, Bruce, Quinn, Norris, Campo, Shumi, Lisbie, Pablo, Gio.
If any of those apart from Gio play in the Premier League I'll eat my plastic season ticket, whereas I think half of our current team have got a genuine chance. At least Keane spotted that was never a team going places, even if his dismantling has meant one step back first.

The 'fully comitted' statement. The beginning of the end is nigh for Keano. The only reason this type of statement comes up is that the press and fans all know that a manager should go and Clegg has been asked about the situation. The 'fully comitted' can be read as 'as long as he is under contract, and for the benefit of the morale of the players, we have to put up with this numpty, but as soon as the season ends and/or we find a replacement then we'll be giving him his P45'.

'Getting us to where we want to be' - yeah, at this rate we might be mid table by 2015.

I hope he is gone pretty soon. Spending eight mill and dropping us 10 places down the table is not a manager that i want round these here parts.

At least thouse players got closer to the prem than the current lot. Whose fault is that if the players are a better bunch. The manager maybes?? Work it out mate. If our players are so much better why are we fighting a relegation battle.

Every manager has to inherit a team. But thats the point of a MANAGER, to MANAGE. Otherwise a manager would have the name BUYER. Good 'managers' make the best of what they have.

Robbie spot on

Funny thing I asked SG at the London Supporters do last year 'what qualities he felt Roy keane brings to the job as a Manager'
He talked about a winner like Steve Redgrave etc etc
Well as I pointed out they are individuals , a self centred winner does not make a manager - brilliant sportman and olympians as they were-they are just not the qualities of a Man Manager
Managers have to accept each player on his merits and keanes world is black and white - Is still do not see any qualities and when he was given a 'chance' by having a great bit of experience in Peter Taylor he turned it down
Clough had Taylor , Fergie had Kidd , McClaren and keane has err - you get the picture

@ Richardk .....if I bought some goods for a shop i would be buying the expectation that they work...if I buy a football ticket i only expect to see a football match how it is played and the result are irrelevant to the cost of my money if I could buy a ticket that guaranteed attractive football every game along with a win it would be a betting ticket id buy not a match-day one such tickets aren't available at any club anywhere in the world if you only want to pay to watch a winning team then don't go to any matches until we are winning or watch a winning team it is as simple as that... some might frown at your morals but its fair enough especially if you cant afford it.

@ bluherts if Celtic want to progress more in Europe that can keep living in Cuckoo land they wont get anywhere in Europe playing S**T pub league (SPL) style football it will do OK in the Europa cup or what ever they call it these days but they never have and never will have a hope in hell in the champions league they should have had more faith in what Tony Mowbray was doing if that's what they wanted and lived with 2nd place in the SPL for this year and probably next although he didn't do himself any favours being so open about it lol

Robbie, the reason we are fighting a relegation battle is because we had a disastrous start to the season. Yes, blame the manager for that, but it's history now. Maybe he should have got the sack at the time, but in my opinion the form since then (someone else did the maths and said it was playoff form) doesn't justify that now.

My point was I fancy our chances of making the prem some time soon more now than I did before RK arrived.

Seriously Delusional, you wrote "If any of those apart from Gio play in the Premier League I'll eat my plastic season ticket, whereas I think half of our current team have got a genuine chance." Which of the current players that Keane brought in do you mean? Excluding loan players, the starting line up Saturday was B.Murphy, D.Wright, Delaney, McAuley, Leadbitter, Norris, Peters, O'Connor, Walters. Taking our players already here when Keane joined us, that leaves: B.Murphy, Delaney, Leadbitter, O'Connor. I can't see the Premier League quality to be honest, although I accept Leadbitter is decent and O'Connor has potential. For £8M of spending though, that is pretty poor.

I'm not excluding loan players or players who were here before (no reason to) so I mean:
Leadbitter, Colback, O'Connor, D Murphy, McAuley and Norris as outfield players.
And yeah, RK's definitely made some poor buys, no denying that. But I still prefer this team.

What's all the c:ap about letting him get his team together. Isn't most of this team roys own buys and loans including priskin and trotter who's out on loan and Martin, yes what is Martin up too these days. Interesting nobody has labeled mariner as a possible replacement.

Got a free ticket to the Southampton vs Leeds game a few weeks back. League 1, 31000 attendance amazing atmosphere. We are just pushing 20k amazing!

Good news, although it's only due to so rubbish tabloid reporting that Clegg should have to clarify the situation.

Bottom line is some people on here have VERY short memories. You will no doubt recall that Jim had a far from successful first season and 99% of people called for him to be given more time. So why are they not extending the same to Roy? Even half way through Jim's third season people were calling for TIME. So where is the difference? In fact Jim spent MORE than Roy.

Let's get this season over. Allow Roy to build in the summer (probably 4 new signings required) and see how things are going at Christmas. If we are still struggling then it will be the right time to reassess.

SeriouslyDelusional - if you include loan signings inyour comparison, it's arguable whether the positive effect of Gio alone (played with say Thatcher, Garvan and Stead) would be better than Leadbitter, Colback, O'Connor and D Murphy.

We have scored just 5 goals in the last 7 games and it is rather dull at the moment. This time last year it seemed our play off hopes were over, whereas this season we felt that months ago!

Mark - true, I'd swap the whole lot of them for Gio. Is he coming back?????

Re Jim's first season..I think you'll find that he had next to nothing to spend (not the £8M Keane's had) , it was his first season as a manager & he was one of our own so we admittedly gave him more time...Granted,that when Jim was finally given money to spend things started going tits up for him - money isn't always the answer as Keane (and probably ME) are finding out.

It's also quite appalling at the way this club's new owners/management/whatever have treated Bryan klug...apart from Wickham, where are the rest of the youth kids that we were churning out by the bucketload when Burley was in charge? (another reason why i'd like George back here in his rightful place).

This situation can't be allowed to go on - the fans are arguing amongst themselves on an hourly basis, the style of football on the pitch is abysmal and not what I was brought up watching as a town fan,Keane still doesn't know his best 11 & it seems the only players he can attract are ex-sunderland.

If the press is to be believed (!) then he would've been out through the door possibly today if we'd lost against swansea...does that mean he'll be out this saturday if we lose..or the game after..or game after?...it's not the way things should be and the longer it carries on the longer it eats into next season's preparations which is already quite unnerving....I for one don't want to see anymore of this crap carrying on at our fantastic little club.

Marcus - there are more than enough better options (all available) staring you in the face - Burley,Curbishley,Coppell,Mowbray, even Magilton - sort it out.

Guthrum added 19:36 - Mar 29
For all you people saying "forget Clegg, what does Marcus Evans think": Simon Clegg is not ITFC Press Officer or Spokesman, he's Chief Executive.

The Chief Exec in a company is the man making most of the business decisions, the manager-in-chief.

ME (or rather his business) is supplying the money. As Chairman, Evans (with the board) will have final say over strategy and major decisions. But you can bet the voice carrying the most weight in advising him will be Clegg's.

So his opinion is hardly negligable.

Read his book, the guy is a winner and inside he has always wanted and craved success, learnt from the best manager there is and believes in discipline!

The thruth is our players are the ones that should be under scrutiny, they are responsible for bottling so many games this season!
