Sunderland Want £1m for Murphy
Sunderland Want £1m for Murphy
Tuesday, 27th Apr 2010 22:22

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce is understood to want Town to pay a fee of £1 million for loan striker Daryl Murphy. The clubs are negotiating a deal for the Irishman but are yet to come to an agreement.

Bruce, who spoke with Blues manager Roy Keane last week, has previously said that Murphy isn’t in his plans at the Stadium of Light, while Town are keen to make his loan a permanent move. The 27-year-old is happy with the Blues and would like to stay at Portman Road.

Murphy is contracted to Sunderland for another two years and is on more than £20,000-a-week, around double the Blues’ highest wage. It is likely that much of the fee that Town would pay the Black Cats will be used by the Wearsiders to settle the remaining years of the Waterford-born man’s contract.

Seems a pretty reasonable fee... depends how hungry he is to play for us! And his wages!

if we can get him on reasonable wages, 1 mill is a snip :) well compared to priskin anyway lol

Why is it whenever we want to get rid of someone that we usually have to give them away a free transfer, yet Sunderland can ask £1M for their cast off?

If Murphy drops to £10,000-a-week to join us and we give him a 3-year contract, that is still a total cost of £2.5M to us. Is he really worth it? He has not played well recently and I am concerned the 6 goal spell a flash-in-the-pan? He scored 6 in 18 for us, 14 in 110 for Sunderland and 0 in 4 for Sheffield Wed. So, 20 in 132 games overall in England, which is about 1 goal every 7 games.

Jon Stead, who most of us agree is not good enough to take us to the next level, has scored 18 in 61 for Ipswich, which is about 1 goal every 3 games.

After a bright start, he has not stood out over the last couple of months, in fact CW has eclipsed him recently. We could get better for less.

Waste of money, save up for Hooper!

No thanks, he's not the answer and would score 10 tops next season, he's a left winger who wants to play upfront, he's not good enough, keep Wickham and Pablo and bring in Ricky Lambert from Southampton

Murphy's form has dipped lately after a great start. A full pre-season might make all the difference but given the likely expense, both in terms of fee and salary, I would rather the money were spent elsewhere. Not convinced yet...

I agree Stead is awful at holding the ball up, I just meant to make the point that his goal scoring ratio is better than Murphy. Although Murphy is a bit better, I do not his presence up front has been as good as the likes of Kuqi or Lee over recent seasons.

We are coming out of a biting recession and it is a time when many football clubs are struggling to survive, with many teams such as Wigan, Portsmouth, Cardiff, Crystal Palace etc. in trouble. In January hardly any money changed hands and I would have thought lots of players will be on free transfers as clubs try to offload wages. Surely there are some better deals out there to be had?!

I suppose the 1 mill will mean they can use it to pay off 10k a week for the next 2 years remaining of his contract. Then we pay him say 10k a week for the next 2 years and he isnt out of pocket. Nice work for not doing alot. Scored a few tap ins to start with , then looked totally disinterested in my opinion. The sunderland fans cant wait to get shot of him because he has no heart and is lazy etc etc . But keane knows best .........I hope.

I would rather have hooper thats for sure, or austin, or chopra , the list goes on.

Im not even impressed in the slightest by his hold up play , its no better than steads or Sterns , and not even as good as a 17 year old boy`s

No thanks. Get them down to £200,000 and we can start talking. I mean, who are we bidding against?

Its hard to know what to think of this.... I would only want him here if they openly reveal that he has taken a massive wage cut to come to us! That will show his determination to play for us......

Obv I would rather have Chopra here but the chance of that happening is slim even if cardiff dont win the play offs.

Hooper would be a gd gamble but again depends on how much they want for him. As he cud easily do a Priskin, has a gd season then doesnt do much.

I hope this thread isnt the platform for some to start asking about Rhodes. Its not going to happen, get over it. Unfortunately ofcourse!!

THis summers is going to be great! World cup and plenty of tranfer rumours!!!

Give Steady another chance.

Arc good comments!

What we need a Kuqi type of player not the most talented player i would agree but what he gave us week in and week out was commitment! Tracking back/closing down/ throwing his body on the line! Along with a good pacey striker someone who has not had the glory of a prem club and is looking to better himself by proving he can make it as a footballer! Just like a certain David Johnson!!

obviously stead is a lot better the facts speak for themselves why get rid of a proven if not prolific goalscorer for a expensive not quite as prolific goalscorer ? oh i forgot stead isnt a ex sunderland or irish player

Not a £1mil player, no way. If there are a load of clubs chasing him then O.K. maybe, you go with the market. But, you have to remember this time last season he turned his back on Town to try and sign for Hull.

Erm actually Jon Stead is ex Sunderland! Keano sold him before and he will do it again, I hope! Seriously Stead wont get us promoted and he certainly wont be any good in the prem. I'm not sure that Murphy is the answer though, a good start and then just waned. Keano knows what he's doing though, £1 mill is a fair price, if his wages get cut from 20k a week. I think Martin Patterson would be a good signing considering Burnley are back down in the Championship.

In fact just worked out Jon Stead's career games to goals ratio and he's played 272 games overall and scored 63 goals. I've seen midfielder's score more than that, also baring in mind 22 of those goals were with Huddersfield - 16 of which were scored in Division 3 the other 6 were scored in Division 2. Hardly eye watering stuff!

Hmm. Smaller price-tag than I was expecting.

However, as others have said, not absolutely convinced he's worth it even so. Started well, but tailed off sharply. Will he get back into the groove, or not?

And how much would the wages be?

WadzillaBhoy added 01:06 - Apr 28
6 goals in 18 games is 1 in 3 as well Mark! Its a bit unfair comparing Murphy's overall games to goal ratio and only Stead Ipswich Goals/Game ratio. Especially considering Murphy has spent most of those games on the left wing. 25% of Stead's career goals were scored in English's lowest league. 16 goals a season was his best ever return, one which he will probably not replicate in this division or even in League 1.

I like Steady. Decent player, hardly a world beater admittedly, but a finisher if ever I've seen one - he's like a slow Darren Bent. And a quick Darren Bent gets in the prem just like the man himself. Murphy has shown glimpses that he could be good but he'd need to show a lot more. Personally, if we were going to gamble I'd rather take it on Healy than Murphy

honestly i think hooper or chopra or someone like that would be a safer bet. we need another young, hungry goal scorer like connor really. not an old boy like murphy. a bit of passion is what we're missing i think lads!

I would rather give Stead a decent run than sign Murphy for a fee ,why dont we just tell them that we dont have enough money like Colchester did over Lisbie if he is not in their plans they will want to get him off the wage bill whatever ,if not look elsewhere, spend the million on Ambrose from strapped Palace goals an left sided sorted
