Celtic Closing in on Murphy
Celtic Closing in on Murphy
Saturday, 12th Jun 2010 10:07

Celtic are reported to have opened negotiations with Sunderland regarding the signing of former Town loanee Daryl Murphy. The Blues are also understood to be keen to add the Irish international to their striking options for next season.

Murphy is said to be interested in the move to Parkhead with a fee of £1.3 million claimed to be on the table in this morning's report, a figure significantly higher than the £900,000-£1 million which is believed to be Sunderland’s valuation of the 27-year-old, who is contracted until 2012.

Glasgow Rangers and Reading have also been linked with the former Waterford United man.

Celtic are also believed to be interested in another player mentioned in connection with Town this summer, Scunthorpe’s Gary Hooper, although Middlesbrough are reported to be the favourites to land the £2 million-rated ex-Grays Athletic striker.

Firstly, Murphy scored several crucial goals for us last season, sop probably deserves some credit. However and that said, I don't think he is as good as Chopra - and his wages are even more! All in all - it would be good if he goes to Celtic.

We need to start signing players soon though.

Murphy is no better than Stead anyway.

Well, on the one hand there must be plenty of better and cheaper options options out there in the world of footballers. But on the other hand, in Roy keanes very limited scouting network of players he's worked with before, murphy is one of the better options.

some people have short memories.

I do recall lots of people rushing to sign him after his first few games.

Stinkius winkius or what ever you call yourself, what do you actually know about keanos scouting network? And I think u will find numerous managers keep to the players they know, harry redknapp is a good example, dindnt do spurs anyharm I see. Murphy came in and did a job for us, got vital goals and that shouldn't be forgotten.

Murphy was rubbish. Lazy, actually probably the laziest player I have ever seen put on a Town shirt and that really is saying something.

As for the goals, sure, he scored a few. So did Neil Gregory and he was awful.

Move on....

£1.3M for a player on his wages and with his poor goalscoring record?! Yes, he gave us a lift when he initially joined and credit to him for that, but he then faded and looked very average. No better than Alan Lee really, a player we picked up for about £300K and on a quarter of Murphy's wage.

Gary Hooper sounds more like it, a 22-year-old who has scored a goal every two games on average for Scunthorpe. Let's buy some exciting promise rather than Premier League has beens (or never weres).

Did I hear that Norwich have signed 5 players? When will we get someone? I thought Keane wanted the men in place by the start of preseason training. If he is looking for 5 players, we need to get a move on as our rivals are investing and getting first choice over the talent out there.

Why would anyone decent want to sign for Ipswich .. a poor mid-table Championship side, on the way down and with a psycho manager?

Vexorg....go away lol

I would spend 900,000 on murphey to play left midfield providing i knew his heart would be in it but he wants to be a striker and i have not been managing him or had a conversation with him so i don't know really.... i would play him upfront when Chopra/Wickham were not performing need resting etc.
and Civelli would be his competition as he returns to fitness/form

alot of people need to get over this 1 play instead of another feeling...there's no reason why we cant sign more than one player....lol and just because one is reported it does not mean we don't want the other one to lol that being said i think interest from Celtic/Rangers killed are chances of signing Murphey so we will never know if we would be signing him and chopra aswell as others or where Keane would have bought him for primarily

@ vexorg decent championship players already have signed for Ipswich after a season finishing only 1 place above where we did this year in Magilton's first year but the simple answer to your question is Money Talks and we have lots of it.

@ Mark Norwich may have signed 5 people but have they signed any players? we could go out and buy 5 lumps of tripe also but where would that get us we are after better stock and that takes time

I hope Celtic get Murphy ....wouldnt want that pile cack here !

> we could go out and buy 5 lumps of tripe

Yeah, this is what we did last season. :-)

I wouldn't play Murphy left midfield if we had him. We need someone on the wing with pace, skill and ability who can deliver crosses and create chances.

Murphy £1.3m; Hooper £2m; Chopra £4m. Where do they come up with these valuations? What real difference in quality is there between the three?

And, meanwhile, Everton sign a Portuguese U-21 international striker, with bags of talent and potential re-sale value, for £600,000. That is working the market.

He did okay. Nobody is complaining aboutb the goals he scored I see?? That's his job - to score goals. Buy him or not Keano. You will be gone by Christmas anyway.

Hollywood minge or whatever you call yourself - my comment about keanes scouting network is from what I've seen - that there's a disproportionate number of players linked/bought/loaned from keanes past. If he could broaden that to the thousands of players from other clubs and countries then it opens up so many more options. And as for the harry redknapp comparison - he has always taken the best players from his previoous clubs, not the offcasts which is (mostly) the case for keane.

No better than Stead and certainly to lazy to spend £1.3 m on.
As for Blueknight85 suggestion of buying him as another midfielder to play on the left - what planet are you on? You certainly wouldn't want a lazy player stuck out on the left of midfield. Town already have alot of players competing for midfield and so lets no play square pegs in round holes by making him a makeshift left winger - silly suggestion IMO. If you want a left winger buy one or at least loan a player and see how Civelli does before spending the money there. We still need a right back, centre back back up, at least one winger and striker and going by Keane supposed search, a Goalkeeper too.

im obviously on the same mental planet your from we don't have anyone competing for the left wing we had to resort to sticking a central player there in the shape of Jack Colback who we don't have any more Civelli if he ever returns to fitness and is any good is the only option.

And on top of that you seem to know nothing about Daryl murphy who certainly wouldn't be a "make shift" left winger as that is where he played most of his best football for sunderland.

And i Believe i said i would be utilising him in both positions depedning on form/fitness of Civelli,Chopra,Whickham and himself. A left winger is something we very much need and i wouldn't be shy to buying a right winger either if Edwards does not pull his finger out as we have no1 else than him (no i don't count peters)

Not the front man we are looking for, the signs were there when he turned us down twice before in favour of Sunderland. He started off well but faded and appeared lazy and disinterested at times. Stick out for Chopra or Hooper to join Wickham, I also like Simeon Jackson who reminds me of Johnno, can see him linking well with Wickham.
