Final Chopra Bid?
Final Chopra Bid?
Sunday, 22nd Aug 2010 09:42

Town boss Roy Keane is set to make one final move for Cardiff frontman Michael Chopra, according to one of this morning’s tabloids. Keane is said to be ready to pay the Bluebirds £4 million for the player he has been chasing all summer.

Keane said on Friday that Cardiff, having added Craig Bellamy to their squad, may be willing to sell his former Sunderland striker but that as yet Town won’t pay the asking price: “If someone gives them their valuation, then Chopra might go, but Ipswich wouldn’t meet that valuation at the moment.”

Chopra started for Cardiff in their 4-0 home victory over Doncaster on Saturday but limped off with an injury after 32 minutes.

The Blues boss says that with Jon Stead likely to move to Bristol City this week he wants to sign two attacking players, one of whom is likely to be Wigan’s Jason Scotland, a midfielder and a defender.

We are doing well at the minute, so lets go get these players as we need to build a team that cannot only win this League but keep us in the Prem

Come on Marcus give Roy some cash to get some decent players in. You never know we might have a good season. COYB.

Agree RetroBlue, but they have to be the right ones. Don't want to get stuck with another Lee Martin. We need at least three players including two strikers if we let Stead go.

Too much money there have been other quality strikers available for less but we seem to be blinded by Chopra. Hooper, Lambert, Jackson, I know some have already moved on but just hoping for a few more irons than the whole budget on Chopra.

With Stead proposed move this coming week, it means we have let go of 14 players, that is a hell of a lot off the wage bill, probably a saving of approximately
120k a week????????? not a bad saving hey

Might be unrelated and i know my maths skills aren't that great but.... On Friday Dave Jones said that bringing in Craig Bellamy will allow Cardiff to pay of their debt to Motherwell. Seeing as the bluebirds are alledgedly paying 35k a week to supplement his wages, how does that give them more money to pay them off????

Does that mean they have to offload some players?

They paid half of what they owed Motherwell from the shirt sales generated by Bellamy's arrival, and I believe the other half will come from gate receipts from yesterdays game. They still owe Sunderland £2.5m though.

£4m? £3m seems more reasonable anything above is far too much. Would prefer to stay clear of Cardiff and buy from another team, as can't stand them at the moment - clearly buying over their means and plunging themselves into more debt in a final effort to buy the championship. Giving them £4m would obviously help to balance the books and, although this is a very harsh thing to say - especially towards the fans who don't have a say in how the club is run, I wouldn't mind seeing what happens when Cardiff fail and have to face the music. The whole Cardiff situation smacks of desperation and them doing well could set a dangerous precedent.

every time a story like this comes along I always get excited but too often I get disapointed. Here's hoping for this time though!

Would be good to have, but £4m sounds like desperation. We don't know what the final price will be, of course - if he comes.

Thanks for the Info Hucks. Can't see why wigan are holding on to Scotland, think a reserve striker the leastof their worries. Will be surprised if Martinez is still in a job by the end of the day.

£4M is a huge amount of money, and then a big wage on that (what, £18K a week?). According to Wiki, Chopra has scored 17 goals for Cardiff since his move back there in 43 games. Stead has scored 17 for us in 60 games. Does that make Chopra worth £4000K and Stead worth £225K?

Aside from questioning the value and a worry about us not looking more widely for a striker, I would welcome Chopra here as we definitely need some firepower from somewhere and quickly.

I think the problem with the £4m fee is similar to what happened when we wanted Norris from Plymouth. His true value then was £1m but Plymouth had agreed to a ridiculous sell on clause with Bolton so we had to bid twice his value just so Plymouth could get the actual £1m he was worth. Likewise with Cardiff & Chopra - to get their hands on the £1.5m he is probably actually worth Cardiff put a price of £4m on him as £2.5m of that is owed to another club.

Compared to stead being potentially sold at £225k then it does seem that £4M is way over the odds for Chopra. But then if you compare it to the sale of Walters for in the region of £3M then he seems a steal.. (although I think Stoke were daft paying that for Walters anyway!)

£4 million is welllllllllllll Worth cant believe some people think it isnt.... we just sold John walters for £3mill....
we payed nearly 3mill for marcus stewart and that was donkys years ago

Stead is worth more than £200,000 i agree but not much more he doesnt have a spectacular scoring record and yes he works hard for the team and seems commited and is a shame to lose a player like that but we need goals more than commitment you cant keep everyone based on effort alone,I dont know how much is left on his contract... but he is on top wages which a club will have to pay to get him and thus not be worth paying a big fee for. Stead is usefull but not the kind of striker we need we need a poacher someone who can run in behind the defence to beat the offside trap and score every game not just in small spurts of games Stead would be absoulutley spectacualr to have on the bench but you cant pay a player those kind of wages to be in the bench we need those wages to pay the 1st team players

Chopra for £4m? He is probably worth it-but would he really come to us at the moment? Cardiff are playing great football and have a good squad depth-so the likelihood of them getting into the Premiership this season is quite high.Would he risk missing out on that? He would probably want reassurances that further signings are imminent and would want a high wage bill....
Still can't believe Steady is going for that price......
Why is Keane alienating another player (Civelli) with his comments about his mental attitude? Will we once again hear "he will never play for this club again..."
Great start to the season-but we need to stop selling and start buying AT LEAST 4 good replacements....
Baptiste is arriving tomorrow for yet another "trial"
Benjani wants 20K a week and he is free- why don't we at least look at him? (he says he wouldn't mind moving to Championship..)
