Jewell: More Signings to Come
Jewell: More Signings to Come
Friday, 26th Aug 2011 08:36

Town boss Paul Jewell is still looking for more new recruits despite already adding 11 players to his squad this summer. The signings of Jimmy Bullard and Daryl Murphy were confirmed yesterday, while the paperwork making Ibrahima Sonko a Blue is set to be rubber-stamped this morning.

Jewell says there could be further additions either before the transfer window closes next Wednesday or on a loan basis after that: “I don’t think that’s the end of us. That’s 11 new players, a huge turnover and that’s another reason why it will take time for us to get right. It’s not going to happen overnight.

“Deadline day is less important for us than it is for the Premier League teams because we can still loan players seven days after it closes, so we could get players in on loan for the Blackpool game.”

The Blues manager confirmed that he has spoken to Stoke about two players with defender Danny Collins again claimed to be a £700,000 target by one of today’s papers. The other Potters player is almost certainly Ryan Shotton.

Jewell says that Stoke, in common with other Premier League clubs, are loath to let players move on until the transfer window closes, so it may be that one of the duo could come in during the week before Town’s trip to Bloomfield Road.

The Town boss says this week’s sudden influx of signings isn’t a knee-jerk reaction to Saturday’s hammering at Peterborough: “It’s not as if we’ve bought players because we got beaten 7-1, we were looking to sign players when we beat Bristol City 3-0.

“It’s a bit like London buses, they came along very quickly and quietly. The week has been no different in terms of being on the phone, it’s just that some things have fallen into place for us.”

Jewell realises that getting his signings to gel will take time but has always said turning Town into a competitive side would be a long-term task: “It’s not going to be easy but, having said that, if you don’t think the players that were already here are good enough, there’s no point in sticking with them.

“I think some of the results we’ve had this season show that there are certain areas where we are lacking, so we’ve got to try to improve the squad.”

One area where the Liverpudlian is certainly still looking to make a further signing is in goal with first choice David Stockdale subject to a 24-hour recall to Fulham and with Márton Fülöp having moved to West Brom on a free transfer earlier in the month.

Former Blue Richard Wright is still training with the squad and was in goal for the reserves in Monday’s behind-closed-doors friendly against Colchester, but Jewell says that at the moment that’s as far as things go: “Richard only lives around the corner, so he’s been training here and he played in the reserve game the other day because we didn’t want to risk Arran Lee-Barrett.

“He’s good experience for the young players, he’s got a good voice and he’s here training keeping fit, but things might change.

“We are on the look-out for another goalkeeper, a young one to take us forward in the future because Stocky might be called back at any time.

“We are aware of the situation where we’ve got Arran and we might have Richard as back-up, but in the long-term we need another young goalkeeper to take us forward and that search is continuing.”

All of the signings have been alright so far to be honest, maybe barring Bowyer but that's so-so. It's been the old players that have been the problem, Delaney, Smith ect..

Well.
PJ has proven that he can attract decent players under difficult circumstances.

Time to put it all together on the training pitch. Refocus. Don't undermine confidence. Own the team.

About time a few moved on as well isn't it? Scotland and Priskin must be surplus to requirements now, and what about the likes of Hyam and Healy at least going out on loan. Not as is they're going to get a sniff now.

Joe Lewis from P'Boro? Not in their team and in the England reckoning once upon a time?

Amen to that brother

Anyone who was at the pre. season friendly against Wolves would have surely been delighted by the signing of Lee Bowyer, over the course of the season I would expect him to do really well for us, in my opinion he is another excellent signing.

Would just like to thank ME, SC and PJ for all their hard work over the last few months in trying to assemble a squad of players good enough to challenge for promotion. Hopefully over the next week our defence can be improved and we can offload some of the rubbish that has been stinking out PR for several years. It has been a strange week - if anyone had told me on Sunday that I would be looking forward to the Leeds game this week-end I would have laughed at them. Good luck guys - onward and upwards.

Really pleased with everything that PJ has done so far. Great signings so far across the board. We have LOTS of youngsters in our squad who will all benefit from the experience of players who have been at it for a long time and played in the Prem! The comments from both PJ and Keane have always been that we have a squad that don't know how to see out a game or remain calm after you score etc. Saturday's game against Peterborough was a classic example - 1 up and then 3mins of madness! More experienced midfielders/ defenders etc. Think that Delaney has looked very shakey so far this season - does that come from playing with younger defenders?! He didn't seem to have that problem playing with G Mac!?

Suler and struna would be better far than the stoke pair (do we need a crap left back?) and would logically come as a pairso let's ship out leadbetter and co quickly to save for their wages. Get there two in and it's down wo PJ then.

Lanky - Bowyer is an excellent signing and had you been at the Bristol and Wolves games you would have seen his value to the team. The bloke is an obvious target for our opponents and two horrible challenges in separate matches at home completely slowed him down. Bowyer has great experience and I am sure will turn out to be an excllent player for us - just give him a chance.

Lanky - I have yet to see Ingmarsson play, so I don't knoiw whether he is a good signing or not. On a footballing aspect I think Bowyer was a good signing, whether you like him as a person is another matter.

The keepers thing is typical of Jewell, he's not afraid to gamble. Stocky is on a 24 hour recall, so he wants plug around incase we need him, but doesn't want to give him a contract incase we can get something better (or end up not needing him at all). Whether this way of going about things is brave or stupid I'm not really sure, we took a comparable risk with the centre half situation and it backfired spectacularly. I still trust Jewell's judgement, but he sure does like to fly by the seat of his pants a bit. But maybe it's that quality which has helped to make him sucessful in the past.

Shotton & Collins both came off the bench for Stoke last night. Given that Stoke are now in the group stages of the Europa League, hard to see them being let out on loan.

Ingimarrson is a class act and would have stopped a lot of last weeks nonsense , he will turn into a very good signing !

Blandford - I don't want to sound negative, but....

Last year we finished in the bottom half, we started this year without last seasons best goalkeeper (or best two keepers), best defender, best two central midfielders, without recieveing a dime for them, and sold our most promicing striker.

Lets hope that Jimmys return and the other signings can start to fill the gaps.

Thanking ME and SC for allowing our best players to leave for nowt is a little rich!

Like to see Roberge and that Super-Sula signed asap.
Anyone know how the Costa-Rican, Czech and French guys are getting on in training? (is it Francisco Calvo?).
There's some weird claus in Roberge contract btw. Apparently, can be signed, but then won't join us til Jan.

Not normally negative but all these loans are not the foundations to build a succesful team. Short term quick fix is not the way to go and it will all end in tears.

IMHO our fully fit squad plus any of the defenders we have been connected with (Collins and Suler) will give us a squad capable of at least a top six finish. However, we need to be patient as 11+ new players will always need time to gel. I'm confident that PJ will get it right but it might take until November or Christmas. So long as we are hovering around 10th-12th at that point then the nature of the Championship (everybody taking points off each other) means that we still have a chance.

We have arguably the best goal keeper in the league, I'm a massive fan of Cresswell at left back from what I have seen of him against Wolves and Hull. If Ingimarsson can stay fit then him and Sonko already have an understanding at centre back.

Bullard, Bowyer and Andrews is an awesome Championship midfield and I feel that if they can control games then we will really see JET shine. Chopra has been desperate for a strike partner and Murphy's physical and arial presence will really bring the best out of arguably the league's best striker. Things are looking up!
