Jewell: Too Susceptible to Counter-Attacks
Jewell: Too Susceptible to Counter-Attacks
Saturday, 29th Oct 2011 17:56

Boss Paul Jewell bemoaned his side’s susceptibility on the counter-attack after losing 4-1 at Millwall. The Blues manager hit out at some of his players for failing to do their jobs.

A disappointed Jewell said: “The way we conceded the goals was hugely disappointing. I think when we got back to 2-1 I think expected to go on and maybe get something out of the game, but we’re susceptible to the counter-attack and that was shown up today."

Town’s vulnerability to counter-attacks goes back to last season, although Jewell says that that's ancient history, believing that some of his current players simply aren’t doing what they’re told: “Last season’s well and truly gone, I’m talking about this season and I think we all know we’re susceptible to the counter-attack, there’s no denying that.

“The reason for that is that too many people want to do their own thing. We’ve got a team and we’ve got to try and get the best out of them and there are too many people who want to try and do their own thing at the moment, and that’s why we’re getting caught out.”

The Blues boss cited Millwall’s second goal as an example of when players weren’t doing what they were supposed to: “When we’re attacking, they don’t pick up. Thinking about the second Millwall goal, the ball drops to Jay Simpson, there’s three of us round him and no one’s gone on the front foot. We’ve backed off and we’ve backed off. For some reason we’re backing off.”

Jewell admits that the performance was nowhere near those in the recent spell of better form: “In that run we had we took the game to the opposition, today we were nowhere near.”

Town’s cause wasn’t helped by two first half injuries but the Blues manager refused to blame the changes of personnel: “Lee Bowyer’s nicked his hamstring and the same with Sonko. It didn’t help us but we won’t be using that as an excuse.

“At 2-1, you’re thinking that we might have ridden the storm and we might come back, but we didn’t.”

Millwall manager Kenny Jackett was unsurprisingly delighted: “It was a very good game. To get back to back wins against Leicester away and Ipswich at home is big for us.”

Against Palace we lacked width & pace.

wingers = width + place

today: no wingers starting.

today: no wingers on bench.

today = wtf

Sorry, but i lost patience today. Jewell, you got that wrong today no questions. All week we've been saying we ned a back up plan if the diamond doesn't work and we've all said that Kennedy can't play at left back in that system. These are basic fundamental tactics that even those scummy Millwall hoody teens could see if they'd been watching the game and not goading us throughout.

That bench depressed me today. We have players that can change the dynamic of games: Martin, Carson, Priskin, Murphy, O'Connor...WHERE ARE THEY!?

Ellington is the same as Scotland so surely that's a given that there's a place for most of the afore mentioned!!?

With the exception of Jimmy in the 2nd half, Chopra and Stockdale everyone in a town shirt were below average to abysmal today. That coupled with some naivety from Jewell has led to a bad defeat against a poor side.

P**s Poor all round. What have we been working on for a week since Palace!? Time to change up Jewell and inject some youth, width, pace and movement into the side and use three or four of those mentioned during the next game. Doncaster at home is surely the time to do it?

Struggling to understand what Jewell thinks he's doing sometimes. Seems to me that most, if not all, of the problems we had last year are still there and he hasn't fixed them. That could well be down to finances, I don't know.

For now, he needs to forget about the diamond, because it's become predictable and easily defend-able. Really, it's also become easy to attack as well. We need to play with some width and pace again, because it does exist at this club... somewhere.

Personally would like to see Carson back at some point and a partnership of Andrews and Bullard in the middle, with Edwards on the other wing. Of course, then you're relying on Wabara at right back... every time I think of a change, there's a downside.

Do not envy Mr Jewell right now, but that's why he's a manager and I'm not.

Keanish: I have to agree with every word you have said.

PJ now needs to bring in some of these players, or at least give them a chance to show what they can do up 'till Jan. If no good - ship em out and get in young blood that can. A team of ageing Premiership players will NOT get us promoted. The mix isn't right in the team,. But fair doos to PJ he's nine months into a 2 or maybe 3 year push for promotion.

I try my hardest not to comapre us to 'them' but tonights headline 'Lambert hails special group of players' says it all.

Do we have a special group of players? No, they are a fecking disrace. Rejects, Criminals and general scumbags picking up their ridiculous paycheques before retiring at the expense of us supporters who are stugling to pay the bills whilst faced with the most over inflated ticket prices in the clubs history.

Overeaction? no, ITFC died long ago and this situation is joke.

I havent bemoaned this yet but its starting to get on my nerve..
Our team has alot of older players, and two of those are subbed off in the 1. half because of hamstrings..
We HAVE to bring in some fresh and young blood, it doesn't always do us good to bring experience in.. Hate to say it but look at s*um as an example..

i have never been more angry at ipswich before. not even at the 7-1 or the losses to Norwich.

Why did he play Sonko...why?
Where are Martin and Carson?
Why is Wabara here? Why?

Is there no end to this clown's gibberish? Before the game we heard about an improved Ipswich travelling to Milwall. He brought in numerous players over the Summer, having had ample time to identify needs. We are still unacceptably exposed defensively - too many goals leaked against average opposition. Tactically Jewell is clueless - the ancients can't bail him out every week.

Bowyer and Kennedy are past it. The sooner Jewell realises the better!

Here we are then Jan 2011 beaten by a ordinary Millwall side fast forward to
Oct 2011 beaten by a Millwall side that had previously won 1 in 10 by two more goals. I might be mistaken but is this progress ?
I personally have not got lost in the mistaken euphoria of a couple of good results.
You never win anything with boys........but you will consistently get beaten with journeymen on a last contract and loanees.
Glad it's not my money.

For those moaning about Carson- he has been in the squad for the last 2 games and I would imagine he is close to getting into the 16. He looked leaner today and some of his practice shots in the warm-up were class. Hope to see him on the bench/start next Saturday.

I agree Kennedy is past it as a full back but could still do a job a s defensive midfielder but i think Bowyer's hustle and ability to still break into the box is an asset. Though he teamed up quote well with Cresswell in the diamond to be fair.

The same old problems again...too static, too many simple and not hurting the opposition passes, not working hard enough OFF the ball...you get this with an ageing side, you can have a couple in there but we have far too many. We have no change of plan when it seems..

With the team that we have. Full of capability, but not in the flush of youth,
we need to play possession football with bursts of brilliance. You cannot expect THIS team to defend AND attack endlessly.
Giving the opposition the ball is NOT a good idea..

These comments make me laugh. As much as it annoys me to concede 4 against a team like Millwall, have you all forgotten about the 6 game run we had where we kept 4 clean sheets. If we win our next 2 games everyone will be happy again. Jewell isnt clueless, but i agree today he got it wrong and think we need a bit more pace a couple more younger players in the team.

It's not the defeat it the manner in which we are losing games without really imposing ourselves on the opposition. I concur with many of the posts regarding our obvious lack of pace and width. We had a good run of games which left us in a strong position in the league but I feel that many of us felt that there was no plan B and that the diamond formation can only work for so long. Change the tactics to suit the opposition. We must look to improve this midfield sooner rather than later. As for the subs yes we need impact players who can change games. I have to question whether some of the loanees have the heart. Carson, Martin, and even Priskin can change a game. We're still in the mix but PJ needs to address these issues and quickly

Disappointing today, but let's not be too hard on Paul Jewell as we have won six league games this season whereas in Keane's first full season he hadn't had a single win on 29th October! 4 points off the play-offs with a home game coming up...

I feel like we've gone full circle back to the side that lost 5-2 to Soton all those weeks ago. We really need to put some pace into the team: Carson, O'Connor, Martin even Peters (if we were to recall him) all possess this quality.

Some fans used to slag off players like Danny Haynes on the basis that he was supposedly all speed and no technical ability. Ironically, for all the experience and skill in our midfield, the team is crying out for a player of his ilk right now; someone who can scare and unlock defences with raw speed.

It seems painfully obvious that the diamond has been 'found out' by sides with a bit of pace in their ranks, yet we seem to persist and put like-for-like players on our bench.

Why oh why start Sonko if the guy is still not 100%? I do like PJ but the last three games have left me tearing my hair out: it's so obvious we need to change things!

Please sort it out PJ, NOW!
COYBs!

It was so frustrating today! Great support we had again away from home but the goals we conceded were abysmal and laughable! In the warm up Josh Carson was looking sharp and then he wasnt on the bench, we need to get him back in the squad and team because today we lacked width, pace and imagination.

After that lets stay positive, only 4 pts of the top 6 and win 2 games in this league on the trot and you are right back in the mix so need to panic.

Anyone see Stockdale's save in the 2nd half?? What a save!!
