Jewell: We Concede When We Come Under Pressure
Jewell: We Concede When We Come Under Pressure
Saturday, 19th Nov 2011 17:56

Blues boss Paul Jewell was again left ruing his side’s tendency to give away goals when they come under pressure at vital times as Town conceded two in the final six minutes as they lost 3-2 at Nottingham Forest.

Jewell said: “It’s a bit of a sickener. I thought it was a good game. I thought there was plenty of effort and endeavour.

“I think that at vital times in games, and I’ve said it before, when we come under pressure we concede goals.”

The Town manager says his players were again guilty of making unforced mistakes: “Individual errors - the first goal is definitely the keeper’s fault and that’s right on half-time, a vital time in the game. The second one is someone not marking the man they were told to, although it was a good ball in.

“But Steve Cotterill will be saying the same thing about our goals - four set plays. In the end you need that little bit of luck, a deflection off Grant’s head has fallen right for their player. So, once again it’s a big disappointment for us.”

Jewell felt his side deserved more from the match: “It’s always frustrating but I think we came here and played quite well for periods of time. It was a game between two evenly matched sides, I thought. They were at home and the onus is on them.

“Again we’ve got ourselves in two winning positions and at vital times in the game we’ve given silly goals away.

“I thought we matched them all over the pitch at times and it’s still not an easy place to come, Nottingham Forest.”

He admits that the Blues’ form won’t improve until they stop giving away poor goals: “It doesn’t matter which way you dress it up, we concede goals and that’s not just the goalkeeper and the back four, that’s a whole team thing.

“I think we had the first corner of the game after about an hour, so it wasn’t a game of loads of chances, our keeper hasn’t had anything to do really. It was a game of two honest teams trying to win the game but not one with a plethora of chances.”

Jewell says midfielder Keith Andrews will be back for the Blues’ home game against Reading having undergone surgery on his broken nose: “He had an operation on Thursday morning and hopefully he’ll be back next week.”

Forest boss Steve Cotterill thought his side deserved the win: “What a fantastic advert for the Championship. Everybody was entertained today, that’s for sure.

"I think it was a game we deserved to win, it doesn’t matter about the two late goals.

“I think that showed their team spirit, their togetherness, their belief, I thought they worked extremely hard today and I felt it was a game they deserved to win.”

Same old excuses from a manager who frankly is nowhere near good enough. Before anyone dares say it ROY was RIGHTLY sacked - yet he did not deliver as much rubbish, poor results as PJ. I am afraid it's a fact - anyone want to make excuses - just check up on it. Jim and Roy were actually better than PJ! What on earth does that say? Derby fans warned us - I feared it - and now it is a reality; PJ will ruin this club. He has already started: 6,000 less fans, poor tactics - signing injury prone has been players on MEGA contracts and loanees, no Plan B. No planning for the future. An insistence on playing a formation which has now failed 4 times in a row. Failure to address the defence. Do we really need to go on? PJ should be sacked and sacked now. Appoint an up and coming manager, who will build us for the future - not persist with a manager who for a long while now has delivered nothing but rubbish and who is actually driving fans away in their droves. At least Jim and Roy managed to get people into the ground!

JEWELL OUT. No more excuses PJ lovers. This guy is simply one of the worst managers we have had for many a year - and that really is saying something! 11 MONTHS now - this is PJ's team.

7pts.from top 6. 7pts from bottom 3 how is that for middle of the road ?????
I know that people will say that there is a lot of games to go BUT we have got to start winning a few and confidence is draining away from us the supporters as well as the team. SO please Jewellio do not do a DERBY on us we deserve better than that !!!!!!!

p.s. people who say mid-table awaits us - get real! We could be relegated! Look at Norwich 2009 - relying on loans and has-beens ... we have an abysmal manager as well. Time to wake up - we are going backwards under PJ! BACKWARDS - it's worse than under Jim and Roy! The facts tell us that!!!

JEWELL OUT!

Win percentage under PJ is better than Keane's Jas, I'm afraid its you who needs to look up the facts. Jim you could say was 'better' than PJ but not Keane. That's just cr*p mate.

Again - 6,000 fans? Please, stop lying, its pathetic and boring. That is JUST NOT TRUE.

FINALLY we are scoring some goals this season and generally under Jewell, albeit losing some games. Under Keane we would lose and score next to no goals!

We want stability and we are to sack our manager after 10th average months? We are not going to go down, ask any manager in this league and they will tell you that (who funnily enough know more than you lot).

Stability means keeping faith with a manager who has atleast given us some highs since he's been here, not sacking him and bringing in 'an up and coming' manager who will take another year to build his own squad and WILL lose games, and what happens then? You can't gamble on 'an up and coming' manager and think he will take us up. Is it worth changing manager to finish 14th instead of 15th?

Like everyone I am flabbergasted that Grant Leadbitter has managed to hold a first team place down for so long, he gives us nothing and to have the captaincy, just cannot understand. Oppos must be delighted to see him on the team list.

All I want from this season is for us to play decent football and look like we are progressing. We are back to playing turgid old tripe and lugging it forward with no movement. I just don't understand why we did not play a team that resembled what finished in the Donny game, with Bowyer in for Leadbitter. At least we had a bit of attacking threat with the wide men that pushed the oppo back.

Agree with Jas0999.Time to get real.A team built on premiership loanee's is not the way forward long term.Andrews and Collins have as good as said thanks for the time at ITFC but no thanks for a permanent move and Stockdale could go at any time. These players represent 44% of the MOTM awards so god help us when they go.PJ has known our defensive frailties for over a year and we've signed two injury prone defenders in Sonko and Ingarmarson both who are realistically likely to play a third of the games this season if lucky and isn't that why Reading let them go?.How is this building for the future? And now 16 games in Einstein realises we need some youth and pace.Give me strength and what have the existing scouts been doing?!! A 4 game unbeaten run could easily have been 5 as Portsmouth played better than Town.Unless PJ gets this sorted we will end up in a relegation battle and frankly i'm beginning to lose faith in him.

I agree it looks unlikely we will get Collins and Andrews in January and where will that leave us? Bullard is average at best,Bowyer showing his age and Leadbitter is the worst captain I can remember and not worth his place let alone the armband. This is Jewells team now and it's simply not good enough? Jewell has assembled the worst team I can remember and has shown today he is tactically inept. Time he went back to Sky tv where at least his jokes were funny! Our club which we all love is in a terrible state from the owner down and will take a very long time to get back on track.
I do not know what the answer is to be honest and maybe if I did I would be earning an outrageous amount of money to put it right.

But I think the day Marcus Evans took over was a very sad day and the club has gone downhill since that day.

Well
I don't earn a couple of million a year
But even I can see that no professional footballer will want to risk his career at Portman RD come January.if there is no significant change.

Which probably means relegation.

I would suggest Mr Jewell commits himself to a success clause meaning that he either succeeds or takes minimum wage of £500 per week.

The lads need to be galvanised to ACTION. MOVEMENT within a system that theybunderstand.

The problem with us oldies, like PJ is that we remember the good times and forget the commitment, enthusiasm, the detail of how it happened.

I agree 100% re Leadbitter. Just drop him a couple of games. See what happens. I have been waiting this for SO long now.The man has talent but no discernment.

Once again these a very dark days for our beloved football club and sadly we have seen too much of this over the past few years. I stuck with RK until almost the bitter end and I will stick with PJ for the moment but I have to say the signs a very worrying. Our goalkeeper is now causing concern and he has to look at himself as over the past three games he should have done much better and saved at least four of the goals in the last 3 games. What worries me about PJ is his apparent lack of tactical knowledge. It is easy to blame the players but PJ sets up the tactics and picks the team and he himself has fallen woefully short in this direction of late. Legend if we finish half way I will be delighted but the alarm bells are ringing and when you consider we have now lost to Millwall (4th bottom when we played them) Doncaster (bottom) and Forest (4th bottom before today) half way is a dream and like others cannot see where the next win is coming from. Oh PJ Reading have pace

Having been a blues fan for all my 49 years, the last couple of years has with out doubt been some of the worst. I do not usually write on these sort of forums but to say im frustrated is an understatement. When i hear things like Harry Redknapp recommends to Evans who the next manager at Town should be [Cotterill, bet he's laughing now] and we end up with the fool Jewel i wonder were we are going.

I read all sorts of rumours of who is coming to Portman Road in the new transfer window, but in all honesty who would want to come here, £500 K for an unknown Orient winger [no disrespect to the lad] i give up.

Jewell has got to go and quick. get Curbishley and sign Jordan Rhodes and Scott Loach players who love the Town.

I hope it can only get better.

Garv.....do you reckon fans/managers of scum, Forest, Leeds, Saints and the Sheffield clubs said the same? Time to wake up, yes Jewell has made massive mistakes but today is the cause of 6 years of hell. The fact that there isn't a football man running this club scares the shiit out of me. No board = no hope.

Bitterly disappointing and I agree with the comments questioning why Leadbitter is captain. Perhaps what we are getting is what we can expect with the limited investment in the team following the loss of key players in the summer. Any manager would struggle to cope with that I suppose, on the back of Keane's mismanagement of the club. Before we critisise Jewell too much, remember that he has spent on transfer fees in total what Keane blew on Leadbitter alone.
