Clegg: Jewell Still Has Owner's Backing
Clegg: Jewell Still Has Owner's Backing
Wednesday, 30th Nov 2011 10:37

Town chief executive Simon Clegg says he and club owner Marcus Evans still have confidence in manager Paul Jewell despite the Blues’ run of six successive defeats, the latest last night’s 4-0 thrashing at Burnley.

Clegg said: "Marcus has still got huge confidence in the manager and that he can turn this around.

"We're all devastated,” he continued. “This is a really poor run of games we're on at the moment.

"Let's not forget we had a good run only about five weeks ago. I am convinced we've got the right players to turn this around.

"And if anyone can do it, Paul Jewell can. I've still got a lot of confidence in Paul Jewell. I think he's a top manager.

"It's not a comfortable time at the moment. And all I can do is assure all our loyal fans that every effort is being made to turn this around quickly."

As we have seen from bitter recent experience sacking the manager is not the clever part; appointing the right man to succeed him is. While giving Burnley due credit for their well deserved victory we clearly did not do anything like enough to make a game of it. And to me this is the point; if after throwing away points in recent games PJ couldn't inspire the players to even show a little bit of pride or self respect in themselves, any faith anyone can have in his ability to turn things round now with these players must be truly blind faith. If players like JB & JET who owe PJ so much find it impossible to return a bit of the faith he has shown in them even occasionally, his goose is well and truly cooked.

Blakeyblue and Super Reuser I could't agree with either of you more.
Lets go through the team last night and the last six games and see how other teams would cope with what has happened-
Goalkeeper: x3 changes in six games, Stockdale, Wright, Lee Barrett
Right Back: Although ok, not ctually a right back, Edwards
Left Back: Excellent, only real good signing Creswell
Centre Halfs: Collins Done reasonably well can't complain, Sonko did well when he arrived missed the last six (lost all games since is injury) Delaney Injured, Ingarmarsson only played a few games since his injuries so there has been no consistent partership. Take Man.Utd, Ferdinand and Vidic, one missing knowhere near as solid at the back.
Midfield: JET & Carson, lack of games to show full potential and settle into a position, Carson does appear to be turning into a good prospect give him a run in the side. Bullard, Bowyer and Leadbitter (S..te) all need repalcing 'urgently' Andrews appears to be the best of the middle of midfield.
Forwards: Chopra, apart from the start of the season not performing, Scotland poor needs replacing and Murphy not enough chances as with JET and Carson.

Feel really sorry for Jewell..he's brought in some great signings - Chopra,Bowyer,Ingimarsson,Collins,Sonko,Bullard,Jet,Creswell etc etc and I think that during the transfer window most of us were very happy with what he'd done (albeit,I think too many signings were made in one go)..the players are just not doing the business for him, themselves or us and you have to wonder what the problem is?

Like i've said previously,I personally think the problem started 4 years ago when Marcus Evans came in half-way through Magilton's 2nd season ,and from that point on we started throwing bucket loads of money at a problem which wasn't really there..too many average players have come and gone since.

I'd like to see how many players have come & gone in the last 4 years?..it'll probably be astonishing.

I have never heard such a load of total S**T. and I am not talking about Clegg. I am talking about the total morons that are posting on this site. If you are a true ITFC fan, this is the time to get behind the team and the Manager to try and help us get back up the table. The more you hit against the team and the Manager the worse it will get. You look at the scum. They went down and the supporters get behind them and filled the ground and look at them now. Our so called fans always hit the self distruct button at the sign of any problems and also walk away from the club. I have supported ITFC since 1968 through think and thin and will always do so and I have to make a 240 mile round trip to see home games. So stop being so pathetic and get behind the team. COYB

All - you are making a big deal out of this statement as in reality Clegg was forced to make some form of statement this morning.

The statement says nothing that is binding and is just a holding pattern.

My view on this is that if we lose on Sat, especially in the manner of shipping 3 plus goals then ME will be forced to act, even if he believes that PJ is still the right man. We are in the entertainment business and poor results mean loss of income, in addition, fan power once tipped in a negative manner is irrecovable.

It is not time for PJ to go yet !!!!!!!

If PJ goes then we have yet again wasted a load of money as the new manager will want to get his own players in, then we are starting all over again. I know the buck stops with Pj but the players that he has bought in should be good enough at this level.

Players
All you lot seem to do is post stupid comments saying "PJ out" but it is in fact also the players that need to pull their fingers out of their a*sholes and put the effort in. im talking about every single player in the team. I know everyone loves jimmy Bullard and so do I but what has he actually done this season, what has bowyer done, ingamsson is useless. All these players are being paid good money with no return !!!! Im sick of it they should be busting a gut for the whole 90 mins no excuses.

Manager
I do feel that PJ has def missed a trick, why o why has he not bought in an energetic defensive centre midfielder who can protect the back four because this is our main problem as we do not have a single midfielder that can tackle they all want to get forward. I personally would give Luke hyam a go at this position, he done well for us at the start of RK's 1st full season in charge. We only have one good centre back in Collins and Edwards is a liability in defence, he is good going forward but never picks his man up. JET is useless, PJ has wasted a lot of money on him and he cant keep using the excuss that he aint fit, he must be by now. He never wins a header and is lazy and unless the ball comes to his feet he does nothing.

Im not sure where we go from here especially if we loose to Watford but with 28 games left we need to give PJ a bit longer and get behind the team. Nice win sat will be a start.

bluedragon, sorry, but you really are an idiot. ok, youre not the only 1, but how you & others can blame clegg(& M.E.) for what is happening on the pitch is beyond me. the only people to blame for that are pj, his coaching staff, & the players. its strange dont you think that in the summer/early season when clegg was getting all these players signed on you all thought he was doing a great job, but now youre all using him as the scapegoat for other peoples failings. as for those who are saying theyll not be renewing their season tickets next year? well, other than those who cant afford it, its clear youre not loyal supporters, as those who are would support the team through thick & thin. and i accept its very thin right now, but i, for 1 would support this team whatever division we in. oh, & for the record, i believe it is time for pj to go, as whjile he not been given the time that jm or rk had, the difference is, hes an experienced manager while they were not.

Clegg and ME have to take the blame as they have opted to appoint two high risk managers (Keane and Jewel). Both of them had questionable careers as manager before joining the Town and both had been out of management for a while. Why can't we do what other clubs do i.e. Southampton or Norwich and find up and coming managers? or failing that go for a safe bet like West Ham.

I have nothing against Jewel but I will be surprised if he will be able to turn this round and I think the pressure is starting to show. The next appointment is so important and I am not sure Clegg has a clue what a good manager is!

I admire those on this forum that support PJ, and understand those that don't.
I don't agree with sacking managers, but I am also not happy at the current lack of an obvious plan to get the club to where it wants to be.

I would like to think that all fans would settle for a team that gave its all once on the pitch. Players who appear united together and behind the manager's vision for where the club wants to go and how to get there. Currently we have none of that. It would appear that whatever team PJ puts out is just a group of cynical has-beens who are not interested in putting in the effort required to achieve the clubs goals.

I would rather watch the U18's, who have not yet been touched by the cynical nature of the modern footballer.

Having said that, I will still be there on Saturday hoping that all concerned will turn this around. But I would ask that if the results do not improve both the management of the club, and the players ask themselves if they have put in the required performances, and if the answer is no, then they should take the appropriate action.

I wonder what our club would have been like today if the Cobbolds had sacked Sir Bobby in similar circumstances.

Lightningboy, in response to you saying about how many have come and gone in last few years, just had a look at the 07-08 season squad, out of 32 players only Peters is still on our books and he's out on loan. 08-09 and Richard Wright is only other name, but he's left and come back since. And out of a 21 man squad in 09-10 only 7 are left, 2 of which are out on loan. I think consistency is the key here as how many other teams will have so few players left from just a couple of years back?

NO WAY SHOULD FANS STAY AWAY! you support your team through thick and thin. My all means we should be free to air our views on the management - but untill we do own the club like ME does then we can't do anything can we. He has to deal with the fan backlash and dropping attendances - that's his problem. Don't not go to a game in order to force him to sack a manager. Choose not to go to a game if you don't want to see it and for that reason only

NO scouting and NO youth policy is exactly the rot that most people can't see. This is a by-product of the fact that we think we have money now so we don't have to use these channels. This is the exact reason why since ME stepped in these negative cycles have been happening!

Someone who has been involved with this club in the past is the person to lead us forward, the person to tell Marcus Evans the foundation of which this club was based on.. Youth & Scouting.

THIS IS THE PROBLEM!!

Tony Mowbray,
George Burley,
Terry Butcher
or Matty Holland in some sort of role is were this club needs to go.. and to find a new CE.

rugbytomc - don't agree with your statement about staying away. The flip side of staying away is letting the club know through financials that the current state of affairs is not acceptable.

Life is full of choices and shelling out of £100 for a family 'day out' is a choice for each individual to make based on their opinions and set of circumstances. Like I have said before financially I can afford it, but at the moment do I want to?

The underlying reason for going that you want to be entertained by a team you love winning - take that away and it's about as much fun as being stuck in the jungle with Delia Smith and Grant Holt!!!!

bontcho - there lies the problem in my opinion. The Cobbolds knew about football, so did/does Sheepshanks. ME clearly doesn't, or he'd be in the stands every week and talking to the players every day, like those great men of football did.

If ME sacks PJ then he should clear out The Colonel as well, and have a look at his approach too. How can someone anonymous run a football club - The Peoples Game.

Sitting in underground bunker somewhere in Ireland. Gets out Directory of Unemployed Managers…. “Hmmmm, lets see, who shall I try next….. Sven? He's been in the paper a lot”……. “Colonel, get Sven on line 1 and make it snappy!”
“YES SIR!”

I wonder what thoughts go through ALB and Cody Croppers heads when they can see how their defense are playing. They can not possibly concentrate on their game knowing the inevitable bombardment thy are going to get? I feel sorry for them they are not on the big money that some are in the team. What are the coaching staff teaching these players? Not a lot by the looks of it,maybe they are the problem?

But if he does go, then Clegg should go as well.

Redust:
Tony Mowbray, why would he want to come back to Ipswich?
George Burley, took 5 years to get us up, TWTD'ers want promotion this year.
Terry Butcher, Works abroad in Scotland and isn't that good.
Matty Holland, never managed and does comfy Pundit work.

I say lets see what Jan transfers brings at the very least.

ps. We'd be in L1 already if it wasn't for PJ.
