Clegg: Jewell Still Has Owner's Backing
Clegg: Jewell Still Has Owner's Backing
Wednesday, 30th Nov 2011 10:37

Town chief executive Simon Clegg says he and club owner Marcus Evans still have confidence in manager Paul Jewell despite the Blues’ run of six successive defeats, the latest last night’s 4-0 thrashing at Burnley.

Clegg said: "Marcus has still got huge confidence in the manager and that he can turn this around.

"We're all devastated,” he continued. “This is a really poor run of games we're on at the moment.

"Let's not forget we had a good run only about five weeks ago. I am convinced we've got the right players to turn this around.

"And if anyone can do it, Paul Jewell can. I've still got a lot of confidence in Paul Jewell. I think he's a top manager.

"It's not a comfortable time at the moment. And all I can do is assure all our loyal fans that every effort is being made to turn this around quickly."

If bad results continue then Jewell would be sacked, but let us hope that he does turn things round and quickly! The best thing we can do is supporters as to get down to Portman Road Saturday and cheer the team on during these dark times. The suggestion on here to turn our back on the club and the team is outrageous.

I'm glad some one still has confidence in him, cause obviously the players haven't and a lot of the Fans haven't. Why do Jewell and Clegg does Ipswich Town a favour and jogg on. No shots in a game, what has he done to this CLUB???

SuperReuser and Blakey Blue, seems to me you're happy to settle for absolute dross!! The set up at the moment is (sadly, I for one thought and hoped that Jewell would succeed) not working and at the end of the day it is the manager who always takes the fall.
Unlike in previous years we have a wealthy owner who will back and fund us as much as he can so in turn we have all been expecting a lot more since he came in 4 years ago. So far all have failed to deliver.
It's not ridiculous for some to be calling for the manager to go, it's called ambition, if you are happy with us slipping into the 3rd teir of English football then it is clear that you have none and consequently are happy with mediocrity which I for one am clearly not!!
Smaller clubs have made it to the Premier league than us, Norwich, Swansea, Hull and blackpool and given the correct blend of team spirit and tactics we can get there too.
Carry on the way we are and it could be absolutely dire for us, look at Plymouth who only a few years were looking at Championship play off places and now facing a real struggle to stay in the football league or even stay afloat as a footballing business!

Q. If you were a player, at any level, things not going well, and the manager picked one of your mates for the first time that season. But after 25 minutes with the game going badly he hauls off your mate, even though he was playing as well as anyone, and much better than one or two of the team do every week.

Or if you were arguably Man of the Match on Saturday, but dropped for the next game.

How much respect would you have for that manager, and would you want to play for him?

We have been told on numerous occasions that a team was being built on a two year plan for promotion.
I for one can not see where this club is going under PJ. If taking on loanees and signing old has beens is building for the future, well. If taking them on is to bring the young talent through all well and good.
However the youngsters are either sold or deserting us like a sinking ship.
At present there is no future it needs a change. However nothing will change while marcus evans is at the helm. He may have money, bullied others to be successful as a businessman, but in football terms he is abismal as his two appointments as manager have shown.

Clegg - You could try giving away the half season tickets, but I doubt anyone will bother to come to collect them.

I am astonished that there are still some people on this forum that still have faith in Jewell, have you not watched or listened to our performances this season, we have been awful for the most of it, from management picking the team/tactics to the players carrying them out.

Even when we had our little run of form a couple of those games could have gone either way & the performances were not actually anything to get excited about, we just caught some teams out with an unfamilliar formation, teams since have soon worked that out.!

Last night we did not have a single shot on or off target for the last hour of the game, words fail me.!

Jewell must go by the weekend - we have a team of hasbeens and loanees assenbled by him.
Give Russell Osman caretaker job whilst we get George Burley back in - a man who can build ateam to get promoted.

Why do people keep saying Paul Jewell is proven at this level?
Bradford - 2 years did well
Sheffield Wed - Rubbish
Wigan - did well
Derby - Rubbish
ITFC - to date..........................

Thats a 50% hit rate which at a great club like ours is not good enough. Think of the managers we have had Ramsey, Robson, Burley, Royale!!!!

In my 38 years of following town this has got to be the lowest point. At least when others have failed it has been because of a shoe string budget for transfers and wages!!

Give him 3 more games and then if we havnt picked up at least 6 points bid him goodbye.

Ive heard people on hear say give the manager time.....ITFC is a club that gives managers a chance as history has proven BUT all the managers that have been sacked were fired because of piss poor results...Keane, Magilton, Burley (YES Burley), Lyall and Mcgiven, John Duncan and Bobby Ferguson....only Jewell, Keane and Magilton had to face the harsh reality of football being a success at all costs money driven business, wether we like it or not thats how the game is now.....ask Sven......Leicester chose to change their manager early and are already getting the benefit and will be up there by the end of the season. I really think that unfortunatly we need to do the same and quickly as much as i want Jewell to succeed I dont belive he will.

I stood at Grimsby when we lost 3-0 and heard the chants Burley Out and you got your wishes.
I watched Royles season after we were forced to sell players and read that it ' was Duncan ' era and to get him out. You got your wishes
I watched the shameful protest at portman road to get magilton out - Evans gave you your wish
Roy Keane was never welcomed by all, and his head was called for . Evans gave you your wish
Paul Jewell - ??

and then who can the pack turn on?? (or were they all Cleggs fault!!!:)

buryblue77 added 12:45 - Nov 30
LollITFC, agreed about Royle as being the best manager we've had in years, I think his spending altogether over his 4 years doesn't cover what we paid for Leadbitter (mainly because he didn't have it available to him) and he nearly got us promtoed, losing out to Paul Jewells Wigan ironically enough.
But, since he left here in '06 he's only had a short term spell back at Oldham and not sure he's now the man for the job due to his time away.

Lets be honest
We are not the biggest club
We are not the richest club
We don't have the biggest fan base
We are never going to see a repeat of the late 70's or early 80's in terms of success, eg at best we could hope for is a consistent mid table premier league finish with a cup success
We have no god given right to achieve

But what our loyal and committed fans do realistically want is
A team of players proud of pulling on the famous blue shirt worn, previously worn by some great players
A team that when they are out played or on an off day roll up their sleeves and battle
A team that is set up with at least the very basics of tactical savvy
A team that includes flair and players that can get you off your seat
A team that at least challenges for promotion.

Lets face it some of the most exciting times have been the Burley/Royle play off years.

Our greatest success in the past has been built on a youth system, players from a lower level or obscure overseas players with a carefully selected blend of mature talent. Not the path we have taken of late.

Please sort this out

Give the man the whole season if he fails he gets sacked and the lynch mob can turn on someone else or he may turn it around with new additions and another good loan like Jimmy last year.
Keane was given the the time in his first season after spending more money and boasting of promotion and at this stage Pl 18 Pos 22 Pts 16 12 points off playoffs ,if we win and it is a big if at the moment our game in hand we are 6 points off the playoffs .
Perhaps we just dont like November as we have now lost 9 drawn 2 and won 1 in last 3 seasons !!
And Jas0999 didnt Jewells team beat Doncaster by 6 (SIX) without them having two players sent off ? And didnt Keanes team lose by three or more to Palace twice,Barnsley,Newcastle,Norwich,Peterboro,Sheff Utd twice, Doncaster ,QPR, Forest ,Swansea so nothing has really changed has it certainly no worse as you constantly claim ?

It is pointless talking of getting rid of PJ until we have somebody reasonable to take over - I really don't think Burley, Holland or Magic are the answer. O'Neill would be good but will not come.

Secondly is it too soon to talk about getting rid of PJ? Here I am not sure - losing 6 in a row is bad, more so it is the manner of the defeats - conceding two late goals two weeks in a row, some horrendous defeats including to the scum last season. Yes the players are to blame so if there attitude is to blame will a new manager be able to change that or will we be back to more wholescale changes and the time it takes for a new team to gel? So it aint easy, if PJ goes and I think he may if we don't stop the bad run soon, we should also get a new CEO.

If Evans is going to replace him then put osman and mccall in charge for Saturday.

Team he has put together is not a 2 year one or long term one given the players on short contracts or loan which are stockdale, wright, ingi, Collins, sonko, Edwards, Andrews, leadbetter, Scotland, ellington, murphy, bowyer.

No pace, no passion and no power.

Where is the blend of youth and experience.

Cannot see how he will turn it round.

Call in curbishley and Holland or Dave Jones.
