Clegg: Jewell Still Has Owner's Backing
Clegg: Jewell Still Has Owner's Backing
Wednesday, 30th Nov 2011 10:37

Town chief executive Simon Clegg says he and club owner Marcus Evans still have confidence in manager Paul Jewell despite the Blues’ run of six successive defeats, the latest last night’s 4-0 thrashing at Burnley.

Clegg said: "Marcus has still got huge confidence in the manager and that he can turn this around.

"We're all devastated,” he continued. “This is a really poor run of games we're on at the moment.

"Let's not forget we had a good run only about five weeks ago. I am convinced we've got the right players to turn this around.

"And if anyone can do it, Paul Jewell can. I've still got a lot of confidence in Paul Jewell. I think he's a top manager.

"It's not a comfortable time at the moment. And all I can do is assure all our loyal fans that every effort is being made to turn this around quickly."

The only way Jewell "will do it" Mr Clegg will be to go to Norwich and take lessons from Paul Lambert. After almost 50 years supporting Ipswich that's a very hard thing to say and something I have never done before. They seem to have got the magic formula whereas we haven't. Or is it that they got rid of a poor Manager and employed a young enthusiastic man who wanted to prove himself and not live on former glories. By the way stopped in mid post and saw the goals from last night, Thanks God I am going out tonight after that show I need a couple of pints!

I've got this wonderful plan, we sack the manager and get a new one in who gets rid of players signed by the previous one, and his back-room team because he will not work with the current staff, then pay over the odds for players who were once good or played for the new manager previously.
Then we give it a few months then we all turn on the manager or each other.
Or we give a manager the one thing a lot of the football experts on the site don't seem to grasp, time to get a team together to challenge for promotion.

the goals conceded last night were pathetic as was the defending on saturday against Reading....seriously worried about the rest of the season.

Guys, the problem is a simple one for me; how many players do we have between the ages of 15-22? How many over 30? Now, how many between 22 and 30? These would be players in their prime with fitness and experience, we probably have 1 or 2 if we're lucky.

I got slated in the summer for saying how worrying it was that there appeared to be no plan to our signings and pattern of play and here we are. I hoped PJ was going to come good after the disaster that was Keane but 10 months on we're possibly even more in the mire. As many have said, let's get back to bringing players on, a good youth set up and playing attacking passing football! The prem may or may not come but frankly that isn't why I support Town!

I went to the game last night and, Lee-Barratt and Cresswell apart, it was the most inept performance I have seen by an Ipswich team in over 30 years of attending games. It was interesting that Jewell only emerged from the bench once to yell at the ineptitude, almost as though he had lost interest. The fact that he used all 3 subs by the end of half time made absolutely no difference to how badly we played. The real worry is it looked as though we need a massive clear out rather than having spent millions on a new team. I can't see a way back for Jewell from this.

safeashouses - spot on. My thoughts entirely and if you were to ask those up the A140 what helped turned their fortunes around it was getting 'football people' back on their board. Fact!

Can't imagine Sheepshanks letting Charlie Austin get back out of Portman Road without signing on.

Onwards and upwards!

Very, very unlikely that a change of manager at this point would do anything much at all to stop the rot. ME has basically got one very simple decision to make- get out or get the cheque book out.
We've muddled along on scraps, kids, crocks and has-beens for four or five seasons and we've got what we've paid for. We need better players. They cost money - serious money, or they take five or six years to grow. Starting from scratch would mean almost inevitable relegation whilst we rebuild but, honestly, can things get any worse?

It would be good if we could sack players based on lack of passion and consistently under performing but that's never going to happen and the manager always takes the buck! I knew ME would back Paul Jewell because again it's a case of eggs on their own faces if he was sacked (but bigger eggs than the one's which landed on their faces after Keane was sacked due to PJ only being here 10 months), if results continue to be bad by the New Year I think Jewell will walk before the ME fires him. If I had my way I would sack both Jewell and some of the players (we know who they are) but in the case of Jewell we'll see what he does in the Jan transfer window and see how things pan out.

Very sad days at the moment when the club is being beaten up by teams like Millwall and Peterborough.

Instead of boycotting the match Saturday as some have suggested. Perhaps it would be better if as many fans as possible attended the game and got behind the team, just as we did in that terrible run under Keane in Autumn 2009. Then at least we would have done our bit, showing the players we still have passion and pride in ITFC and that they should do the same.
However if PJ and the players still under perform despite this then the manager will have to go and so will the players who dont care about ITFC. The current lack of effort and managerial direction at ITFC is out of order and demoralising but the fact that us the fans have given up is almost as heartbreaking. Of course no-one can blame us, BUT other clubs who have been in trouble like this in last 20 years or so have had their fans stick by them on the whole realising they have to help.
Remember ITFC is our club, just as it was before ME, Clegg, PJ, "Roy" etc and will continue to be our club after they've gone.
After that, its over to PJ and players...if they can be bothered of course!

I don't think Paul should go, but if he does stay, he must compromise and bring in some young players in (our own). It has to be either the manager or the old players to go.

This is so illogical that it makes you think of the Swann problem and the Pakistan cricket team débacle this summer.

With such talented players ...is it possible that there is a betting syndicate that is knobbling our team?

I mean to say, it only takes one non performing player (10 men situ

i dont think it matters what any of us say in our own hearts we know what we want but what we get is another matter football is a long way away from listening to the fans and the people that keep the clubs running,we need stability in our club but i guess we will have to keep waiting BRING BACK GEORGE BURLEY 6 games and sacked

As someone posted earlier, it took our neighbours 3 managers in Roeder, Grant and Gunn before they got Lambert and success.

The biggest worry is the fact that these players are the ones which Jewell attracted to the club and it appears he has lost them. Really feel sorry for our younger players and also Lee Barrett who must have felt a real kick in the teeth for Wright to be brought in ahead of him last Saturday.

Whatever happens, if Jewell stays and we stay up, or he moves on and a new manager comes in another side and squad will have to be built next season due to age of current players and contract situations.

Collins and Andrews will not be here in the New Year and how is Jewell going to attract new players in the current position we are in?

Saturday will see the lowest league gate for nearly 3 seasons and how are we going to get fans back?

Watching Palace at Old Trafford and we are so far away from them its unreal.

Football has moved on since Jewells success at Wigan and Bradford but it appears PJ hasn't.

Wow. H32 what a f...ing tard. Clearly your RIP comment is a small-minded dimwitted recollection of the tragic loss of Gary Speed. Actually the statement is true for any of you idiots who have said RIP ITFC. F off and think if you can. You people are so f...ing simple sometimes. Get behind the team.
