Celtic Drop Murphy Fee
Celtic Drop Murphy Fee
Monday, 4th Jun 2012 09:38

Celtic are willing to sell Daryl Murphy to Town for a nominal fee, according to the Scottish media. On Saturday, TWTD reported that the Blues and Bhoys are set to discuss the 29-year-old’s future this week.

The SPL champions initially wanted a £300,000 fee for the Irish international but now are said to be willing to accept a significantly lower figure in order to remove the remaining year of Murphy’s contract from their wage bill.

TWTD understands that Murphy and his family are very keen to remain in Suffolk longer term, the former Waterford United and Sunderland man having spent two spells on loan at Portman Road.

I really like daryl and he is a very good player if we play the way we did with him out on the left i think he could get 8-12 goals for us next season.

The more I hear about this story, the more it makes sense for Murphy to come here; He wants to play for us, is willing to take a pay cut to join, Celtic want rid and he would be a decent acquisition for the money that's being suggested.

Whilst I, like many others on here, was sceptical of Murphy last season & wasn't his biggest fan, I am more than prepared to give him a second chance if he was to come here permanently. Last season he was played slightly out of position also, so I would prefer he played up front, as his aerial ability and hold up play is better suited to that position, but he still does an adequate job on the left wing as well.

This deal, if completed, also does show the club having some sort of transfer and financial credibility, in contrary to what we have seen recently, so i for one am getting behind it wholeheartedly! Promising stuff!

Sounds like Daryl wants to be here and I think he would be a more than useful addition to our squad. So long as the transfer fee and wages are reasonable I would be more than happy to see him back next season.

Oh god no, I won't be happy until we have signed C Ronaldo and Messi but even then Messi might be too short and Ronaldo doesn't win enough headers!

P.s the above was a dig at some unrealistic expectations some of you have.

I would like to see Murphy signed up, he was a big part of everythin good we did In the second half of the season, puts in a shift, his assist rate is deceiving, he actually created so many chances but few were taken.

I rate daryl murphy too he gives us a bigger man to aim for on the Wing.
I think he is quite a skilful player when u play the ball into his feet. He had a great game against west ham at home he left their right back for dead on a few accasions and put some good balls in the box. I know it's only 1 game but u can see hes a good player and very good for ITFC :-)
Sign a goal keeper and a centre back next please - be good to have 4 or even 5 new players ready for pre season. COYB

I really appreciate Town's transparency on all their transfer targets and links. It keeps all the fans informed and gives agents and players the opportunity to get the best deal for themselves.

Murphy would be a good signing - but on much lower wages than he is on. We spent far too much on Bullard! Hope we don't make the same mistake.

Hope this happens and if he's willing to take the pay cut goes to prove he wants to be here and play for us.. which is what we want passion and loyalty

Hope he comes back. In terms of skill, he's average, in terms of work rate and strength he's excellent and he likes it here and clearly wants to play for us. Sign him up PJ!

Celtic must be keen to get him off the wage bill, so I thought asking a £300K fee too was a bit rich. Suppose he is on say £12K a week up there for one more year (£600K), maybe if we offered him say £8K a week for three years (£1.2M) he'd take it? We can't spend too much, as he'll not be worth a transfer fee afterwards due to age.

As for Bullard, it was only a mistake in hindsight due to it not working out. He had a superb loan spell and with him coming one a free transfer, everyone wanted him for example:

"Although less than impressed with Murphy and Sonko - this is a great deal. I really hope Jimmy remains fit. Pleased to be proved wrong - I didn't think we had a hope of signing him. Both the club and Jimmy have surprised me with this! Let's hope that we are not paying him 42K a week though."

if we are keeping Scotland , do we really want Murphy , or wouldn't we be better looking elsewhere . he seems to fall between being a striker and being a winger .

I know I'm in the minority here , but not sure that Murphy offers enough to the team , 4 goals and 3 assists is hardly setting the team alight .............strange that of all our supposed targets , Murphy seems the only one no one else is interested in ?

hadleighboy.... a few years ago , we had a player called Reuser, very exciting player with lots of skill and a joy to watch, i really enjoyed watching him as i know did many others. He was a luxury player whos work rate off the ball was virtually non existent and provided very little assistance to the defenders. What i do on occasions is pick a player and watch that player ( not following the ball for 90 minutes) it gives a real insight to a players worth and his overall contribution, Murphy's work rate off the ball is superb, he is an asset to the team and contributes a great deal, an unsung hero...COYB

for Celtic to drop the fee to a nominal level makes me think Murphy will be attempting to keep as much of his current hefty wage as he can. May yet be a stumbling block.

Murphy did a solid job for us last season and I'd be more than happy if we can sign him permanently.
