Murphy Loan Deal Could Be Done By Wednesday
Tuesday, 28th Aug 2012 10:56

TWTD understands that Daryl Murphy’s season-long loan move to the Blues from Celtic could be completed as soon as tomorrow. Talks regarding the 29-year-old’s return to Portman Road have been ongoing for the last couple of days with the Irish international back from his hamstring injury sooner than had been expected.

Murphy was back in training with the SPL champions yesterday having suffered the injury only a fortnight ago.

Discussions regarding his loan to the Blues — his third temporary move to the club in addition to a number of spells on trial while with hometown club Waterford United — will continue today, but with all parties keen for the deal to go through, the situation could be resolved by Wednesday.

Capped nine times by Ireland without scoring, Murphy made 32 starts and two sub appearances for Town last season, almost all at left midfield, netting four goals.

At the end of the campaign Paul Jewell said he was keen to sign the former Sunderland man on a permanent basis but wasn’t confident a deal could be done.

Speaking in July, he said: “I’ve spoken with Daryl’s agent a few times and if they want a fee, with his wages, we just can’t afford it. It’s no secret that Daryl’s on a good contract at Celtic.

“I thought he did well for us at the back end of the season. We would be interested in Daryl if the deal was right, but I get the feeling that it’s going to be an expensive deal for us to do.”

Of course Jewell was going to try and sign him, there would be no-one to aim for from goal kicks anymore!

But I think this is a desperate signing, He has no pace, is unable to beat his man and most of the time he looks like he doesn't give a s***!

I think Murphy would be a solid if unspectacular signing. We do need someone to win the ball in the air, and there is little point aiming goal kicks at Emmanuel-Thomas. I thought Daryl did a decent job for us last season, and I am yet to be convinced that Carson is worth a first team place at the moment.

Church would be waste of space.. Judge from Notts County would be more ambitious

I for one am pleased with the signing, adds height, competition for a wide position which we need, and has a good delivery. Also, don't see it as a gamble in any way as he has proven he can perform at this club before

Lets face it, We wont be adding the four players that we are desperate for by Fridays deadline!
And why oh why another flaming loan player!!!!
If Murphy was that good surely a bigger club would have snapped him up by now.
If we dont add at least three quality signings by Friday night then we will be treated to another mid table season or possibly even worse.
Evans will not give PJ any money to spend, Its so clear to see.
Hopefully Evans is looking to sell the club, to a football man who knows what the hell he is doing. Unlike the three wise monkeys we currently have!!

Welcome back Murph. I thought you did quite well for us last season.

Legend - I suspect Evans is playing the long game, give Jewell no money n boot him out only when he has to or when his contract is up. That way it means we don't have to spend valuable money on paying him off and getting in a replacement. Managers will keep their jobs a lot longer with the financial fair play rules, changes in managers are very expensive.

What a difference a week makes ,2.59pm Saturday pumped up ready to go top , 4.49pm
flat ,broke thanks to the trip and liquid refreshment and totally bemused by a poor performance . Then underwhelmed by the transfer news as last years steady Eddy strolls into Town . Feel totally let down by this summers activity and reckon Evans has given up on Jewell who is slowly going in the right direction . We need a good striker who can hold the ball up a right back so Edwards can move forward , if Jet cannot get his feet and Brian in gear , sell him not Martin or Cressy . I have never seen a lazier player in 3 straight games , i wish he would wake up .C,mon owners we have missed out on far too many players this summer , stop moaning about Ipswich its a great place to live , Clegg just needs to know how to sell it and actually buy into the program himself by living here .Looking forward to 2-3 good signings this week and a large ,loud crowd on saturday , oops i have woken up lets hope the players have as well !

If we do get Murphy on a permanent deal, do we have to loan him back to Celtic?

midfielders....strikers.....midfielders....strikers.......Surely the REAL requirement is a big, reliable central defender!

When i first saw this was hoping that it meant by shuffled Wednesday¡¡¡ am a Murphy fan but this is a real step backwards ....why can't we get players of a top calibre into this club....still need a strong forward and an even stronger cb....not holding my breath for Friday....lets hope for a good result and a great performance tonight..COYB

Don't quite understand why Celtic would let him come on a season long loan if he only has a year left on his contract. Surely this will alleviate any hope of them getting a transfer fee unless of course we are paying a fee for the loan - if so hope its not too high. I quite liked Murphy but he looks so laid back and at times uninterested. His pace is however deceptive and he did a good job down the left flank least season and at the moment something is better than nothing, especially as we know each other well and he is good in the air.

Solid but not spectacular.

Who's the striker going to be i wonder...? Can't think of anyone else we've been linked with other than Wickham!

maybe he could play at centre back as we still desperately need one

No disrespect but, like most of the things that have happened at ITFC over the past few years, isn't it all rather underwhelming?

also reading we've apparently made a double bid for Paul Taylor and George Boyd from Peterborough...

Very happy with the double bid for Boyd and Taylor. if we can pick them up for under £2,000,000 i will consider that good business.

All we need now is a Centre Back and a Striker (presume that may be Murphy though).

I tink Murphy is the tall striker option that is coming in. also how do people feel about boyd and taylor possibly coming in? is'nt taylor of similar stature to scotland and chopra? what about Boyd though i know little about him??

walberswick added 14:20 - Aug 28
Boyd has been sat there all summer and now 72 hours before the window closes PJ has a thought.

or maybe that 6-0 defeat has forced marcus evans hand to put in money that he might of held back on otherwise.

I said earlier that I am ok with a couple of season long loans....but now we are up to three. Jewell has been carefully and frugally rebuilding this year however too many loans are not exactly conducive to building for the future. He must be running out of options.
The positive aspect about the return of Murphy is that he is a known commodity and adds some height.
Like others on here I feel we still need another big CB and big striker...and good ones.

I can't work some people out! Quotes like "if he was that good a bigger club would have taken him." Is that suggesting that we should be taking players who are wanted by Premiership clubs, but think coming here would be better? We are where we are, one of a significant number of clubs with hopes of making the Prem.

I would rather "get by" with our meagre squad of youngsters who can only improve
than employ Murphy heading toward the twilight of his career and stretching our wage bill
if he was a stand out performer it might be different
if we have some money to spend lets wait for the RIGHT deal to come along

For F..ks Sake. Was crap last time and will be crap again.
Always looked to me like he was just going through the motions. No passion, no goalscoring threat. In fact remember him missing an open goal with a header in front of the South Stand. An absolutely pathetic signing if this goes ahead. Jewell/Evans hang your heads in shame for having no imagination whatsover. Did we not learn the lesson of players coming down a level not having the desire. F...ing hell. Totally clueless. Bring players in who are on the way up, not on their way down.

Benefits of Murphy;
He knows the club more than others currently here.
He plays CF and LM.
He has valuable height.
He's settled and likes the area.
He'll be playing to win a permanent move.
We could get him free in the summer.
Win/Win!!
