McCarthy Set for £1m Bonus if Town Stay Up
Wednesday, 31st Oct 2012 08:58

Incoming Blues boss Mick McCarthy is understood to be set to earn £1 million-a-year at Town, plus another £1 million bonus if he keeps the Blues in the Championship this season. The Blues currently sit bottom of the division, five points from safety having failed to win in their last 12 matches.

As reported yesterday, McCarthy, his Wolves assistant Terry Connor and ex-Blues skipper Matt Holland are set to be confirmed as the new Town managerial team before the weekend.

A press conference to unveil the new team appears likely to take place on Thursday, although nothing has yet been officially announced.

I like a few others would have prefered Ollie or coyle but I think McCarthy is the best man to steady the ship.
we won't play boring football under mick and we will be a lot more organized at the back than we would be with Ollie also I think we need a manager that will kick players into shape and mick will do that better than any of Ollie or coyle.

Why do people keep say that we need a total rebuild. Just look at how delaney and leadbitter are playing for somebody else, Delaney has scored more goals then our leading scorer and middlesbough have scored more goals from a leadbitter corner than we have scored in open play all season. The first job will be send Henderson back to west ham, he said in January he would play for free then join us and it showed on Saturday he doesn't want to play for us now. Apart from that if we drop this 4-5-1 and play players where they are best suited ie JET in a free role, Martin on the left, Carson or Edwards on the right, murphy up front with either Campbell or chops and get a right back in then I believe we are almost there.

Absolute rubbish. How on earth prior to an official announcement would it be known that any detail of a contract would be in the public eye. Hash story im afraid.

Surely it's a million to be promoted?

I have to say, this has tainted this arrival for several reasons:

1 - Holloway compensation was half as much.
2 - We've been scrimping on wage demands for years that if we'd ultimately got those players in for those wages it could be argued we wouldn't be in this mess - what must Jewell be thinking!?
3 - We already have a 67 million slate with Evans...i don't think any of us wouldn't want more based on performance fees!

Welcome Mick and Co but that's a lot of cash....

I wonder how much you've been promised in Jan, we'd rather that figure was exposed to be fair so we know how much we have to strengthen!

This is the team for Saturday:

Loach
Ainsley Chambers Smith Higginbottom
Edwards Wellens Drury Carson
Campbell Scotland

Bench: Henderson, Cresswell, Hyam, Reo-Coker, Martin, Chopra, JET

N'Daw, Luongo, Murphy and Moshni to miss out and the 4 loan players to probably leave.

Chambers to Skipper.

Not against bonus but hold on here,!! he knows are position he wanted job or would not have applied and surely as a capable manager his contract and salary he should be doing his upmost to keep us up anyway !!! That money could stay in transfer pot, just saying!!

If rather he didn't get rid of the players that don't care. I'd prefer if he can make them care.

OK, I understand no decision can ever be right in everyones eyes, but these appointments make perfect sense in the current circumstances. I've always enjoyed watching Mick's teams, it might not be pretty football, but he gets players playing above themselves and giving it 100%. Thats what we need in the position we are in.

I have stopped going, purely because I am fed up paying through the nose to see over-paid prima-donnas only giving 50% - atm I prefer my local football on a Sunday, it is more exciting. If that changes at PR, and also the fair wage structures take hold across the championship, then the man at the helm is worth £1M or more; and I will certainly re-start contributing my cash again at the turnstiles. I will pay through the nose for good product, but not for half-hearted rubbish.

So, MM & TC to sort the squad out and start the rebuilding; MH to learn "on the job" for a few years time when the club has stabilised. I real don't think ME could have (realistically) done any better - yes maybe 'Arry would have been great, but I don't think even Marcus pockets are that big! (not just his wages, but the transfer/wages money that 'Arry would need). Ipswich are not rich to the extent of some other Championship clubs, and we need to stabilise at a sensible cost level, then build efficiently for the longer term without throwing money away.

So well done Marcus, and even Cleggy, on this one!

NEVER MIND ABOUT MICK TRYING TO KEEP US UP WITH A NEW MANAGER TEAM AND A RUN OF GOOD RESULTS GET SOME OF THE DEAD WOOD OUT AND SIGN SOME DECENT PLAYERS IN JANUARY NOT LOAN THEM WE WOULD HAVE CHANCE OF REACHING THE PLAYOFFS
JUST LOOK AT COLCHESTER SINCE THEY HAVE HAD A NEW MANAGER
WE HAVE ALL BEEN A BIT DOWN WATCHING THE JEWELL AND HUTCHINGS SAGA BUT THEY ARE GONE NOW SO LETS ALL GET BEHIND THE NEW MANAGER AND HIS TEAM AND CHEER THEM ON
THEY HAVE PLENTY OF TIME TO PUT THINGS RIGHT AND WHO KNOW WE MIGHT EVEN CHANGE PLACES WITH NORWICH SOON THEY HAVE ONLY GOT SEVEN POINTS TO
COME ON YOU BLUES

I would have preferred pay him £250k Bonus for staying up , £500k for top half and £im for playoffs ? - No stretch goal in there !!! Of course we lose more by getting relegated but that is a separate issue to the bonus - He is , I am sure , being well paid to do a job - which is keep Ipswich in the Championship ( reward him for that ) but then stretch him further - if this is true it is crazy like the horse

If the Manager is on that Bonus what are the players on ?? FFP - Smoke and mirrors and a sign of some desperation me thinks - All paid into his 'Irish' offshore account I am sure - via ME International

Seems like peanuts when you consider what we've thrown away over the years with players leaving on Bosman's.

All the best to Mick and his team, looks like a really positive change of mindset and I'm looking forward to actually enjoy supporting Town!

COYB's!!!!!

What planet do some of you live on!
The club would never reveal how much money they are willing to stump up for transfers etc, it kind of gives the game away to other clubs don't you think?

That's a million pound a year plus a million for staying up, but he has to buy his own players. LOL

Welcome aboard Big Mick. For all those who think this is the worst appointment ever, go and support someone else! We need 100% committment from fans too if this is going to work.

Big money. Sadly, PJ left us in a complete mess, so it will take a massive effort to get us out of it. McCarthy may not be everyone's cup of tea, but we need his type of no-nonscence management style at this stage. You can also bet that he has negotiated a large transfer budget as well. Clearly, ME will be prepared to back him - if indeed the salary information is correct.

@Keaneish: "Holloway compensation was half as much."

Compensation to Blackpool was 400k-500k, but that is excluding wages for IH and bonuses. It would have likely worked out more to hire IH than McCarthy because of that.

Not that it matters really - we're in a dire situation and if it takes these incentives to keep us up then so be it.

£1m a year (less than £20k per week) is not that much at the top levels of sport. Until recently, some of our players were on nearly that (or more, if reports are to be believed). Wonder what Pearson, Mackay, or Holloway are on (let alone some of those in the Prem)?

The Manager has the job with the responsibility. He's the one who gets sacked if the team doesn't perform. So he earns the (relatively) big money.

The manager should be getting more money than the players! How would you feel if, as a manager of any other company, your employees were being paid more than you?

I believe when Bobby was manager he earned more than any player as was the best paid manager in England?

I hope he proves his worth, and he gets the backing of the players and the supporters.

@abujaBlue -

Yeah of course and maybe Holloway would have been thrown the same 1 million stay up deal but maybe not. Would Holloway command as much in wages as Mick. Doubt Holloway is on that much at Blackpool given their infrastructure. Anyway. Regardless, we're in a good hands in my opinion.

I would have been happy with Curbs, Holloway or Big Mick. We could have had Megson, Keane or Boothroyd for instance! Imagine!

Wonder if Hoddle of Davies were in the frame? Think we'd all loved to have seen Hoddle here!

Love the way he has not even been confirmed as manager and we know what his contract and bonuses are.

Even if it is true thats about 40k a week, should have gone for Harry or Ian as I bet they would have done the job for far less..............................

If you look at the players the Jets and Chopra would be on a basic 500k to 750k plus performace bonuses and a signing on fee, so not a bad deal really.

like post before really can see this being a true story

Not sure what this has to do with anyone on here whether its true or not. Its ME's money, not yours, and if he's still spending on what we need in other areas, who cares (unless he can somehow pull out of ITFC and take the money from the club but unlikely if even possible). Some of you one here think he's spending your own money and you have a right to a say on it.
