Mowbray New Blackburn Boss
Wednesday, 22nd Feb 2017 11:58

Former Town skipper and coach Tony Mowbray has been named the new head coach of Championship strugglers Blackburn Rovers, whose previous boss Owen Coyle departed by mutual consent yesterday.

Mowbray, who resigned as Coventry manager in September after 18 months with the Sky Blues and has also been in charge at Hibernian, West Brom, Celtic and Middlesbrough, has agreed an 18-month contract at Ewood Park.

The 53-year-old former centre-half’s assistant manager at Rovers will be ex-Town striker David Lowe, a long-term member of the Lancashire club’s backroom staff having most recently been their head of academy coaching.

Blackburn are currently second-bottom of the Championship but only three points - plus a significant goal difference - from safety.

Gutted as I really hoped he would have come to us in the summer if Mick left .Anyhoo think he'll struggle to keep them up

I wish him the best personally but Blackburn is not a club I think anyone should be jumping at as a good career move right now. Tony's career has already taken a recent hit from that spell at Coventry and I struggle to see this ending in much other than relegation given the way things are run at Ewood Park.

Blackburn, like us, won't do anything until owner changes

Good luck Mogga! Got his work cut out at Blackburn but good to see him back in management.

I suppose if he keeps them up he raises his stock considerably, if they come straight back up next season that's a job well done, and if they go down without a whimper and start badly its' Venky's fault. Not actually a bad move.

Anyone know where Mark Venus is currently?

We all love him for that equaliser at Wembley in 2000. How good that felt when it went it! But as regards management, I'm not sure. I haven't followed his managerial career closely, but has he really had that much success? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Mark Venus is still at Coventry as Director of Football/Technical Director I think

Re Steve_ITFC_Sweden: His stock was pretty high when we was back at Albion and had done well at Hibernian. Not had much success since then though, which is a shame as I'd wanted him back managing here at various points in the past - not sure I would now.

Don't get me wrong, Mugga is a ledg BUT thus far not a great manager.

I'd say that the final nail in Blackburns coffin this year

He's not been successful recently but I'd like to see him do well. A real legend and that goal at Wembley will forever stick in my memory.

For him it's win win. Nobody expects him to turn Blackburn around and keep them up but if he does his stock will rise. If not, and they let him go at the end of the season, he'll get paid out of his deal and wander off with a year's salary. Certainly beats sitting at home

12th Man... If you have a look at the News front page, there is a whole section devoted to Ipswich Town Loanees and Former Players because people have an interest in a "whatever happened to so and so..." kind of way. Therefore, this news is of interest as one of our former players. Hope that helps.

You can find the section I'm talking about here almost at the bottom...

This is a strange one and can only be motivated by money!
Coventry is a poisonous club and Blackburn is even worse as the owners are never seen, have no understanding of football and the way to run a club.
They seem content to sell off all the assets and plough down the leagues.
Good luck though Tony as I always liked you as a player :)

marco007.Their owner is a bit like ours then,as Marcus is invisible to the fans;and does he have an understanding of football, and the way to run a club?
I am not sure, dont know what others think?

Madness on their part : despite everyone wishing it were not so, Mowbray has proved to be a total incompetent as a manager at every club where he has been. He makes other managerial dim-wits like McClaren and Pardew look good.

Will need a bit of luck.. May work well, May not.. I reckon every manager and player has a club suitable for them to be a success somewhere out there. Just finding it can be tricky

Good Luck Mogga - anyone who doesn't see you as a ITFC legend is way off the mark.

He did us proud - wish him well in the game, with a return to managerial success. This one will be a tough ask though.

Great player, great servant to Town but like Terry Butcher should leave management alone

Don't get the appointment at all. Bad owners seem to have made a mess and just hope Mogga doesn't come out worse for it. He'll have short time to work with squad that must be down on confidence so if he saves them he'll deserve a better stage

Good luck to Mogga, as a great servant to Ipswich Town, but he may be doomed in this appointment.
