McCarthy: We Go to Norwich With Confidence
Wednesday, 22nd Feb 2017 17:09

Town boss Mick McCarthy says his side will travel to Norwich City for Sunday’s East Anglian derby “with confidence” looking to continue their improved February form against their greatest rivals (Sky Sports Two, from 11.30am, KO midday).

The Blues are unbeaten in what was billed as a very tough February, drawing at home to play-off challengers Reading and Leeds, away against second-placed Brighton and inflicting Aston Villa’s first home defeat of the season.

“It’s a great game to look forward to,” McCarthy told the club site, reflecting on Sunday’s match in which Town will be looking for their first derby success since they won 3-2 at Portman Road in April 2009 and their first victory at Carrow Road since February 2006's 2-1 win.

“We need to play as well as we have done so far this month. If we do that then we will compete with them. If we don’t reach that level, it will be a tough afternoon.

“We go there with confidence though, and I’ll certainly settle for another 90 minutes of the way we have been playing lately.”

I am certainly not Mick's biggest fan, but I do hope for him that the team goes up there and really turns them over - it will be some kind of pay back for all those scummers who ran on the pitch and goaded him after the playoff game. Obviously I also hope we win for far more selfish reasons...!

We'll, in this cup final (we have nothing to play for disappointingly), I'm hoping and expecting us to go there for a win. A point would be better than nothing, but let's go all out to win the match. Certainly put in a better TV showing than recently.

We have an unexpected month results wise9well done you blue boys) so let's go up the road and take the game to them with powerful football through the midfield to open them up for our strikers, that means bench Skuse there is no way he should start!!

Jas0999... I think we have something to play for, i honesty believe a town victory will put an end to their play-off hopes. That would do me nicely!

We are pants on telly, our last win there was during the reign of the previous monarch, they have better players & more to play for.

They are also not as good as the budgies I know think they are & we are improving. No time for chat re managers or owners or the future. The future is Sunday and for no other reason than I don't have a reason I reckon we will & win well. Just had a fiver on 3-1 @ 50/1 on sky bet & not even had a drink!

COYB!

They've got more to lose than us as they are a few points off 6th place but have more to play for (if that makes any sense)...without Lawrence I'm not sure we have enough firepower to beat them at their place but wouldn't be surprised if we get a draw, yes another one!

McCarthy yet to beat them, record so far D: 2 L:3

Said this on the main forum, but 2006 since we beat them at Carrow Road, and 2009 since we last beat them. My nephews sadly gave up on supporting Ipswich as they are 14 years old and remember nothing but heartache against Norwich, and at the football club in general. I've been trying to convince them to come back but they seem to have all the Chelsea flags/mugs/gear now. At one point they switched to Norwich, so I'm actually ok with them being Chelsea fans now.

If we just consider the last 10 years
2 wins for Ipswich
4 draws
6 wins for Norwich, including that horrible 1-5.

We are long overdue a result against them. I just hope we put in a gutsy performance and get something from the match. One poster talked about the fact that they have a whole generation of fans that don't know what it's like not to win against us, that situation badly needs reversing. They do expect to win, and think it's just a case of "by how many goals". Anything other than yet another loss to them please MIck. For the sake of the younger fans in particular, who don't even know what a good result looks like against them.

The biggest problem is Mick himself. Previously he hasn't delivered and that's why our record has been so poor in his tenure. I didn't like his tactics in play-offs so expecting him to go for safety first approach with Skuse and possibly Douglas in central midfeild.
However IF he continues with latest style and players we may have chance but Naawich will be highly charged as the need points to keep pace with top 6.
So sad that Tom couldn't keep quiet (again) as I'm sure he'll be regretting missing out when he could have showcased himself.

Fulham go into 7th place after tonight's win over Bristol City and still have a game in hand on the canaries. As the matches start to run out for Norwich to make up the current 7 point gap to the play-offs, Sunday is starting to look like a must win match for them. While their recent home form is excellent, I do wonder if they might choke under pressure Sunday and an Ipswich win is a possibility (I didn't think I'd write that a few weeks back!). I would definitely take a draw though, as that would put a spanner in the works for Norwich and edge us closer to safety.

My eldest son is now 10, and he hasn't ever had the pleasure of seeing us win against them. In fact I think the first town game he ever saw was when we lost to them 5 - 1. Unfortunately he remembers it vividly, and Grant Holt's name is forever etched in his memory. Poor kid!

Anyway, looking forward to Sunday. With nothing to play for other than pride, and with Nodge not playing particularly well at present, its the perfect chance to lay the ghosts of 2011 and 2015 to rest.

Up the town!

I would honestly be happy with a draw. Got so used to losing to Norwich (particularly away), so if we got 1-1 or 0-0 I'd be chuffed. It'd put a dent into their top six challenge and their hopes of promotion. It'd also give us a valuable point as we continue to pull away from the danger zone. We've got an appalling recent record against Nodge and I just hope we can begin to change that, starting Sunday. Hopefully we will get a chance to play them two more times next season!

Do feel very, very sorry for the younger generation of Ipswich fans as has been pointed out by DirtyOldNodger and PJewellisagod. It's honestly been pretty humiliating when we've played them. It's hard to forget the near pandemonium of young fans when we drew 1-1 at PR in the 1st leg of PO 2 seasons ago. They put us under incredible pressure and Barts save from Redmond right at the end was world-class. I saw a few kids crying with relief that we had drawn, and others were yelling and screaming like we had won (pumping fists etc). They reacted like that when we drew, God only knows how they will react if we win. They can't even imagine the feeling. Meanwhile Norwich youngsters treat it as normal, and just shout, laugh and hurl abuse when they win. Personally feel this is as good a time as any to get a win there.

MM Please don't play a team to match them, play a team to beat them. The Norwich defence is their Achilles Heal, get the team on the front foot and attack from the onset. Keep your current formation, it really suits the team, and the recent results shows it.
Bart
Chambers, Berra, Knudsen
Spence, Ward, Duguaraga, Huws, Kenlock
McGoldrick and Sears
Skuse to come on if the centre midfield tires, Moore to come on up front with Pitman if we need a last minute goal?

harlingblue your team is spot on. Good luck to Mick, the players and the travelling blue Army. All players need to be on top form but I think we'll win. I'll regret not going when we go and beat them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! UP THE TOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let's get to Carrot road and stuff the budgies and erase the misery of Mings (8 million pound having a laugh ) dismal pass that led to Berra being sent off and ending our playoff dreams.
I'm confident of 3points if we keep up our current for as we've got points off teams much better than the Scum.

One thing MM and this team can't handle is pressure, When did we last winn a big game? Best we can hope for is a draw.

Carrying on with PJewellisaGod's theme, I have a 12 year old who has never seen a winning team, let alone vs the Scum. Even had him up there for the Play Off defeat and had to suffer that ignominy along with the goading of his Scummer Godfather in the Barclay !

For those that say style does not matter, think of the generation we are losing to Chelsea and god forbid, Naarich. We need a win on many levels, but we need our Club back more. COYB
