Wickham Wins Cap in England Defeat
Wickham Wins Cap in England Defeat
Tuesday, 16th Nov 2010 19:05

Striker Connor Wickham won his first England U21 cap as a 66th minute sub but couldn’t prevent his side from falling to a 2-0 defeat in Germany.

England were already a goal down when Middlesbrough keeper Jason Steele was sent off in an incident which led to the penalty from which Germany scored their second.

With Steele having come on as a sub at half-time, Arsenal midfielder Henri Lansbury was forced to go in goal for the final 32 minutes.

Wickham had one or two lively moments during his time on the field and flicked England’s first serious shot through to the keeper soon after coming on.

However, with Germany having the man advantage throughout his time on the field, it was always going to be an uphill battle for the 17-year-old and the rest of Stuart Pearce’s side.

He did look sharp. There was one point when he ran down the left flank, virtually towing the Germany defender before playing it into Nathan Delfouneso.

I thought Wickham looked good for England U21s, reminding us what an exciting striker he is. Ipswich must try to get the best out of him by providing a decent service from midfield and full-backs. At the moment we are wasting him and his value is dropping.

Well done Connor. But we desperately need some goals from you.
Has anybody noticed how absolutely useless David Healy looked for us, but has 2 in 2 already for Doncaster?
I think it says a lot about us (or keane)
Come on marcus, get sean o'driscoll in!!

He looked good in the few brief chances he got (with the team being down to 10 and the Germans fairly dominating). The commentators had a lot of praise for him. Certainly strong and tenacious.

Wonder if it felt odd playing an international in front of a smaller crowd than he sees at PR in the Championship.

Well done Connor! Heard he played well for the time he got and considering England only had 10 men on. Keep it up and bag some goals for Town!

COYB - Keano's magic will soon show

He looked good when he came on as a sub. Hopefully it's the start of things to come this season.

Well Done Connor, they'll be more chances in the U21's for sure. Keep working hard and the rewards will come.

England looked better when Connor came on. Got a feeling he will be in the senior squad before he even gets a run in the U21's. Wouldn't mind seeing Carol and Wickham playing together with Rooney just behind.
