Keane: If My Best Isn't Good Enough I'll Take the Consequences
Keane: If My Best Isn't Good Enough I'll Take the Consequences
Tuesday, 4th Jan 2011 01:37

Blues boss Roy Keane says he will have to accept the consequences if his best endeavours prove not to be good enough for Town owner Marcus Evans and chief executive Simon Clegg. The Blues are only three points away from the relegation zone after yesterday’s 1-0 home defeat to Keane’s first English club Nottingham Forest.

Asked whether he was concerned about his position the Town manager, who was involved in frank exchanges of views with Blues' fans both behind the dug-out and on the way to the tunnel at the end of the match, said: “My job is not important. What we have to do is to try and do our best for the football club.

“It’s not about me. The club is bigger, it’s had some great managers. We’ve got a manager here now, I’m trying to learn my trade, I’m doing my best and if my best isn’t good enough, then I’ll take the consequences.

“I don’t expect you to be giving me phone calls if I do lose my job. It’s the nature of the game. Managers who win football matches lose their job, let alone managers who don’t - George Burley last week, Darren Ferguson, Lawsy, Big Sam, blah, blah, blah. Don’t let my position keep you awake at night. What will be, will be.”

Keane accepts that Town’s current form is far from acceptable: “The table doesn’t lie. I’m a good one to talk about what we haven’t got in terms of options coming off the bench, but we’ve got a committed group of players, who I thought gave 100% for the club. I appreciate that that only gets you so far, but it’s a good starting place, let me tell you.”

The Blues boss again bemoaned his team's lack of quality in and around the box: “The final ball is the hardest part of football. We lacked a little bit of an aerial threat towards the end when Rory went off and we lost Gareth at half-time.

“Forest are a big, strong team and we looked more dangerous hitting them on the break and we had God knows how many corners and freekicks in decent areas, but Forest defended well.”

Keane refused to blame ill-fortune despite Damien Delaney’s own goal separating the sides: “In sport and football there are fine lines between winning and losing. I wouldn’t say we were unlucky today, I think we should have done better in terms of defending the straight ball.

“As for the own goal, you look back at the Swansea game, there was the same type of goal where it got caught under a defender’s feet. I’m always telling players not to be surprised when the ball lands at their feet, whether that’s in the attacking box or their own box. I don’t think it’s about being unlucky.”

Keane believes his side were worthy of more than a single point over the Christmas period: “We’ve got one point out of a possible six. I’m convinced we deserved more than that, but I’m sure you’re sick of me saying that, it’s been a year and a half of me saying the same old stuff.

"We need to do a little bit more. We don’t score enough goals and you’ve got to score goals to win football matches.”

Sounds like Keane is never going to leave of his own freewill.......

Thats an awful picture of Keane Phil, love it!
Same old stuff really. Blahblahblah.
Keane is probably baffled that he still has his job. I was looking at some stats earlier on and we are the worst performing team in England at present.
"Things can only get better!!!"
Or will they? Nothing suggests that things will improve.

Keane will only resign if he is given no option. He doesn't need the money. He's carrying on because it's his mentality. He's not a quitter by nature if he feels he is getting a fair crack of the whip. In the end didn't get that at Sunderland, he felt. So it is up to Evans to push him.
I never thought Keane was the right type of man for Ipswich and said it was a "brainless" appointment on here (for which I was vilified) at the time. I wish as fervently as any that he'd go. Frustrating as it is that he doesn't, I don't think the constant abuse he (and Clegg and Evans) gets on here is helpful to anyone. Evans's is not stupid and I am sure he has a plan drawn up, both as to when Keane has reached the point of no return and to find a replacement. Whether they are good plans though is anyone's guess. What I think we can be sure of though is that any new manager may prove to be just as devisive a choice to the fans if things don't change for the better. Hold tight! It may be a very bumpy ride from here to the end of the season.

ah dont go roy! i personaly will miss you "making a few phone calss" whilst quietly playing down " an expected hectic transfer window" i mean any muppet can get to mid table in the chamionship right? i mean sure the core of the current squad is good (or is there a long way to go? i cant remeber what you said about them last) you only need 2 or 3 whole teams worth to achieve promotion in 2 oh wait 3 wait again 4 years. sure we have a striker who is scoring complimenting his team mate, but he should shut up and concentrate on scoring right? and another striker who is m.o.m 4 games running, but he did have a poor 30 minutes of football, every reason to drop him out of the squad. 5 or 6 "streetwise chracter" loan players should do the job and you dont need an assistant, he'll just get in your way. you still have the backing of your players, i think its edwards turn this week. dont worry about us supporters, we dont know nothing about the game, we'll still be here after some very flat in-effective football. just walk your dogs mate, everything will be fine. keep going roy, sterling job!

i do understand scarcasm is the lowest form of wit.....

We needed width today and it took Rk 50mins to realize that. So he brings Edwards on who gave us that and starts putting crosses in the boxing But then takes fallon off Who was are only chance of getting on the end of one.

He is evidently conceding the imminent sacking (supposedly) so why doesn't he just walk, if he had any self respect and respect for the fans or the club he would walk. Truth is he us a greedy thug who should never work in football again. Agreed BlueFLeece.

idiot took a semi decent team that needed 2-3 additions and turned it in to a bloody useless team by adding over 20 players and blowing over 10 million........idiot

Quite how some people get this romantic notion of Beano is beyond me.

He walks out on his country,he walks out on sfc and he tried to cripple a fellow pro and the idiots in charge of ITFC made him our manager and now he is hanging on for a payoff

These are desperate times. It's all down to the manager who had money to spend and wasted it & continues to make baffling team selection & tactics. We should have seen it from day one when he let Rhodes go. That was just the start of the nightmare. It is even more painful when you look at Norwich, where Delia has very little money to invest, but they do have an excellent manager. How we laughed when they were relegated & we just signed RK. How wrong we were!

Jordan Rhodes leaving was a terrible decision especially considering he had only just arrived at the club.
Ever since, bad decision after bad decision after bad decision.
He is so unpredictable in his decision making (NOT his tactics) that you never know what he might do.
I wouldn't even be shocked if we renewed the contracts of Lisbie and Martin and let McCauley and Norris go on a free.....and put an offer in for Jon Walters (anything is possible with him!!)
Get him OUT OUT OUT!!!!
Why did we get rid of Townsend? Why the lack of a left winger? Is Keane going to make some master stroke and sign Giggs as an Assistant/Player? I don't think so,he just doesn't know how to use them.
He fooled me as a Messiah and he doesn't deserve to stay. Drop him and put Chris Kiwomya in charge until we can appoint another manager.
Norwich have invested wisely. We have left this clown in charge to run the circus.
I'm not expecting any great signings in the transfer window. Maybe he'll try and get Stern John in again or something or finally sign his "superman" Jack Midson (who nobody has ever heard of). Doubt we will sign Midson, St Albans have also put in a bid! (no disrespect St Albans!)

62wasbest- agree to a degree,- but how else are we going to vent our frustrations. Most of us here want him gone!
ozzydog- his history says it all
rkenaeisagod- Sturrock wants midson at Southend so RK will have to get in quick
muhrensleftfoot- i thought they would be great times, -alas it does not appear to be so! Norwich in the premier and us in L1 would be the ultimate salt in the wound.
bobble- said it as it is from the very beginning. we all thought you were nuts (sorry!!) but you turned out to be the sanest of us all!
garv- he has his kids at school in Ipswich etc,- so won't go easy. financial compensation would be a must.waiting to get sacked.
bluefleece- hes done that all season. weird and wacky thinking of RK. don't know why scotland has not played at rb yet!
adamisablue- love the sarcasm!

GO .

Sounds like the idiot wants to go, doe,snt seam to take the job too seriously, lets have a bright young manager like Sean O,Driscoll at Doncaster doing a great job with little money.
I would like to know what was said by the fans behind the dug out!

He wants to go but, he wants money if he goes, he is not stupid. ME needs to sack this guy before we end up in League 1 because this man's heart is not in Ipswich no more and to be honest i think it never was.

@ adamisablue (plus general blabla)

Sorry but there's no way I can let that go unanswered! He has some unsavoury sides to him, but Roy Keane is absolutely NOT a quitter. Did you ever see him play?

I don't know how much you know about the World Cup situation - it's divisive in Ireland too but a simple reading of the facts tells us that it was that fat head McCarthey who fired him from the squad. He had a higher standard of expectation than the entire "Organisational Committee" as to how things should be done. He obtained these expectations from seeing how things should be done, i.e. at Man Utd.

Fergie pretty much chucked him out of ManU due to comments made about a few of the nancyboys in the Utd squad.

Sunderland: there was more to this than simply walking away from a failing side, you know that, right?

The bloody great shame in all of this is that at Ipswich he hasn't managed to translate the fantastic attitude and the pure magic of what made him a great player to the squad at Portman Road.

I want him gone now too but he's no quitter. Quitters are gutless cowards who don't try. Keane does not show these failings. He won't get out of this hole he's in because it's simply too deep. Put The Special One in charge at Deepdale, I doubt he'd be so special anymore. Give O'Driscoll the reins at the Nou Camp...mightn't be the budding star so many think he is. Horses for courses! Keane doesn't belong here, I'm sad to say that because I like the guy (90% of the time) and of course I like Ipswich (99.9% of the time!).

The situation has become almost cancerous, it's feeding on itself and leading to inevitable self-destruction.

cheers

Phil

"I'm trying to learn my trade"

Keane has been managing for nearly five seasons now. Magilton's side were not this bad and he was a total rookie who was given less money to spend.

"I'm a good one to talk about what we haven't got in terms of options coming off the bench"

Well, you've signed 25 players Roy including a £1.7M striker who you do not even put on the bench lately.

"The final ball is the hardest part of football. "

I thought he said a few days ago that putting the ball in the net was the hardest part of football.

Please let's have some news today Mr Evans...KEANE OUT!

His best is not good enough! Neither is the spineless and faceless nature of our owner in these terrible times!
Before I could appreciate his obscurity (something of a unsing hero) but now it is getting ridiculous.. Even if he got his muppet/puppet Clegg to come out and say something on the situation! Keane has to go and I'm not too bothered about the cup runs, neither does the arrogant tw4t... He has already resided to the fact we will be beaten! These two games may be a good lure to attract a half decent new manager... We need saving now, WE ARE FALLING DOWN THE LEAGUE! FORK! An announcement today would send me to the pub to celebrate! So what did you learn playing under Clough and Ferguson then Roy ? What did you learn playing for one of the countries most successful sides ? I'll give you a clue, FA. While some of us were prepared to give you time to take this club forwards all you have merely done is show the world what a clueless arrogant tw@t you are at our expense.

I am so bored, angry, despondent and afraid because we truly have relegation written all over us, Someone needs to come in and do a John Lyall stabilising job and then at the end of the season get shot of that waste of space Clegg. He might know a lot about ski-ing but he knows nothing of football, Another one on the ITFC NVQ Football course.

I expect he has walked his dog now so it's now or never for him to come out and say he's bugg@ring off. Just think as we write our drips he could actually have been sacked as we would be the last to know. Well I can dream can't I!

It gets to the point when it takes real courage to go, Keane's refusal to accept that is not brave it is just plain stupid stubbornness.
For goodness sake Keane go now while you still have a few remnants of dignity left.

tractorboybig added 08:41 - Jan 4
Evans is the man who is not up to it. Keen should have gone at least three weeks ago (Personally 18 months ago). Would have given the new man a couple of weeks with what we had and then the transfer window to sort things out.
