Town Linked With Move for Fulham Keeper
Town Linked With Move for Fulham Keeper

Town are targeting Fulham keeper David Stockdale, according to reports in London. The 25-year-old is keen to go out on loan to gain experience with the Blues and Stockdale's hometown club Leeds said to be interested.

Earlier this month Swansea made an unsuccessful attempt to sign the former York and Darlington glovesman on a permanent deal but the Cottagers are only willing to discuss a loan deal, which would include a recall clause in case first choice Mark Schwarzer picks up a knock.

Manager Martin Jol confirmed that there are a number of interested parties: "We are talking to a few clubs because the conditions need to be finalised.

"We want to recall him if necessary because if something happens with Mark we need a back-up."

Stockdale, who is 6ft 3in tall, played youth football with Huddersfield before joining York's youth set-up, breaking through into the first team in 2003.

Having spent time on loan at Wakefield-Emley and Worksop Town, Stockdale moved to Darlington on a free transfer in 2006.

Impressive performances for the Quakers led to Fulham offering a fee which would eventually reach £600,000 after various clauses had been triggered in June 2008.

While at Craven Cottage, Stockdale has spent time on loan at Rotherham, Leicester and Plymouth and he has made only 13 starts for the Londoners, eight in the Premier League.

An England National Game XI player while in the Blue Square Bet Premier with York, he was named in the full England squad twice earlier this year but is yet to win a cap.

Town boss Paul Jewell has never appeared entirely convinced by first choice Márton Fülöp, replacing him with deputy Arran Lee-Barrett for a spell towards the end of the season before recalling the Hungarian.

Lee-Barrett, who signed a new two-year deal over the summer, and Fülöp, who was briefly linked with Turkish side Bursaspor prior to Scott Carson joining them, have both started games during pre-season.

Excellent keeper, but does concern my becoming reliant on a loan keeper who can be recalled.

I assume Fulop would leave and we would be left with the hapless ALB as the only backup.

We don't need a bloody keeper! Concentrate on a right back, centre back, winger, Wittingham and a striker (seeing as we pointlessly sold Wickham).

Neither Fullop or ALB seem quite good enough to be No1 but I too would prefer a permanent sighing than a loan even tho this lad is very good.

Just now gotta wait for Whoppit to say something totally stupid.....................

The Cottagers are only willing to discuss a loan deal, which would include a recall clause could be a problem.

We have been there before and lost the keeper.

Hope Mark Schwarzer dosn't get injured.

priority is a right sided centre back, and quite desperate at that. Both Delaney and Tommy are uncomfortable there and Ivar desperately needs a stand in as it seems he's an constant injury worry. No surprises Ivar hasn't been risked pre season, if he comes a cropper we are in the brown stuff

Agree we have other priorities though as Fulop is good enough for this league. ALB is on the other hand not!!

To all people who have said "but we need a blah blah". So as we are interested in a goalkeeper then there is no way that we are interested in anyone else?

I imagine that PJ could juggle as many as 3 deals at a time.

Not impressed with a potential loan signing as it will cause too much uncertainty.
As others have said other positions far more important. A decent back four in front of the goalkeeper would be a start and go from there.

Garv have you seen ALB in action? Third choice at best. I am a better keeper than him, even with my dodgy back! Of course we need a keeper.

I think a new keeper is a nice to have rather than a concern. Fulop is ok at this level, and whilst not great ALB is ok as back up. Would prefer a RB and right sided CB and possibly a decent left winger. Don't know what the outcry over strikers is. We have 4 and Chops and Scotland look good to me.

It's not a case of EITHER a keeper OR shore up the defence, folks! Obviously the plan is to do both if possible. But it becomes clearer by the day that the players we want don't just come along exactly in the right order, at the right time or at the right price. Still think we will get it together come August, but no guarantees. COYB!

As I've said before the criticism of ALB is a f*cking farce! He did nothing wrong in all the games he played, until the Norwich game. Then he has a poor game and because it was such a big game everyone slates him for it and its a joke! Better than Murphy.

My view is that if you have a defence that doesn't let too much through and in on goal, a keeper shouldn't be a priority. So what I'm saying is let's get that defence sorted instead of wasting time on chasing a keeper. Fulop is a good standard for this league, the only thing he seems to struggle with is coming convincingly for corners and high balls, and with some good coaching that should improve. If it wasn't for Fulop in the Cardiff game we'd have been thrashed.

Good keeper but id prefer a permanent signing. Joe Lewis at Peterborough would be my 1st choice, then Scott Loach or Joe Murphy of Scunthorpe.all excellent keepers, wud cost a bit but with the 5mill PJ was promised plus the 8mill we made from Wickham dont we have 11.5 mill left? surely we cud afford one of these plus a CB, RB, and CM?
