Jewell Made Mystery Bids
Jewell Made Mystery Bids
Friday, 19th Aug 2011 17:07

Town boss Paul Jewell has revealed that he bid £1 million for a mystery Championship player earlier in the summer and also offered £800,000 for a similarly unnamed target from a Premier League club. The Blues boss continues to look to add to his squad — at centre-half and elsewhere - having made two enquiries earlier in the week.

Jewell said: “We made enquiries regarding two players on Wednesday, both Premier League players, and the answer has come back ‘let’s see what happens at the end of the window’, so what can I do?

“We’re trying to get the players in but the clubs are saying they aren’t prepared to let them go at this moment in time.”

One of those players was West Brom’s Pablo Ibáñez, who he wanted on loan, but the Town manager says he has also looked at permanent deals for players whose names have not come into the public domain: “We bid £1 million for a Championship player six weeks ago that hasn’t come out. We also bid £800,000 for a Premier League player that hasn’t come out.”

Elsewhere, former Blue Jon Walters has extended his Stoke City contract by an additional year until 2015.

Walters, 27, joined the Potters from the Blues a year ago for an initial fee of £2.75 million, which chief executive Simon Clegg recently hinted to TWTD increases as the Republic of Ireland international makes appearances for his new club: “I don’t want to get into specifics but it was good business for the club and I’m delighted that he’s playing regular first team football with Stoke.

"I’m delighted for him [that the move to Stoke worked out well] and financially it’s beneficial for us.”

Really Paul, I thank you for the effort. I am glad we have a manager who shows ambition, and I trust you all the way!

Now we need a good result infront of the worlds tomorrow, personally I'll be at the pub in Trondheim (Norway) watching it.

We need: 2 Central Defenders, 1 striker, and perhaps one creative midfielder.
The optimal situation would be if one of the CB's could be right back aswell, as in cover for Carlos.

Should've kept Troy Brown/Tom Eastman - said it all along. Good centrebacks are hard to find, especially younguns.

On a more positive note - it could be Chopra and Priskin up front tomorrow!!!

If we tighten up our defence, I really think our team we'll be quality! :)

Can't agree we should have kept Eastman and surely the decision to let him go was correct as he can't even get in the Colchester starting line up. Brown I agree was a decent player and would have come in handy now. Whatever, if we don't get a decent centre back soon we will be playing catch up after only a few games.

I agree Brown would be handy to have around now, but I suppose Jewell thought of Ingimarsson and Smith as backups to Deleney and a new central defender he was trying to sign (or two). If it went the other way we could end up with too many players and a bigger wage bill.

Before I would have been happy with Delaney and a new right sided centre back but now believe we need to replace both current centre backs, truly awful defending the other night that I would have delt better with.

What's the point in telling us this?

most fans will criticise me here, but i like tommy smith. yeah, he does so many blunders, and errors, but that's how the young players learn. get him out on loan for two seasons maybe, and he needs to become confident! look what he did in the world cup, and that's because he was rising in confidence! anyway, we need a creative midfielder, which is bullard, we are crying out for one of those, who can change the game, and give chopra and tamas the chances, and they'll take them! up top, it has to be chopra and priskin! jet as a centre forward, and bullard and andrews playing them in!, martin coming in from the side. as everyone is aware, we need two solid centre backs. cresswell has shown me that this kid has class, a sweet left foot, and loves getting forward, and really can defend! i can see him being our player of the season this year! anyway, come on ME, get your wallet out, and get the town promotion! i feel we're going places this season!

Pointless comment really. Although good to hear - the time for talking has to stop. We actually need to SIGN players, not talk about those we tried to sign. There is no telling whether the players were actually available for transfer and if that was the case, it's a waste of time.

He bid £1m quid for a 'mystery' player? So, this is like paying 50p for a lucky dip at the fete? Hope not : mind you, this is Paul Jewell we're talking about ...

whats the point in telling us what hasn't happened, why not spend less time talking to the media and spend more time searching for a decent centre back, even if that means PAYING for him.
To get out of this league i feel that we need to look at some of the players in the lower leagues that are going to want to fight for there place and move up, and not players like bowyer who has earnt all he needs and can just sit back and soak up the retirment fund. I mean what has he got left to fight for? it's the same with other players we are going in for. Look at norwich and southampton they put there teams together with players wanting to do something, and then spent money in vital areas.
To make a team which can fight for promotion i feel that we just need to look at bringing in people that have a point to prove or want to play for the team.

In Paul Jewell I Trust!!!

In the words of the fast show...... This week we have been mostly thinking about the possibility of trying to make an offer to maybe sign a player that might not come but it's a comlete mystery so it doesnt make a difference anyway.

.....and relax!

Ever increasing desperate owner and chief exec plying us with nonsense. They even brought sheepy back today, like that will help, he took us into admin. It is all to cover lack of money spent and taking the wickham money. These muppets must think we are stupid.

The more i read this article the more comical it becomes. I am fearful we may get hammered at peterborough. Evans, do something about it. Now.

Ok, 1st comment from me.If some of you read the comments from PJ, he may be feeding us very little, but what he is saying is, I know where we are short and have been trying to sign this player and that one.Give him a chance everyone, he's trying. The money is there...read, "i bid £1million".Delaney and Smith are both decent centre halfs, but not together, and certainly not a left footed player on the right.

Look its a basic fact - with the level of player PJ is trying to attract, clubs are unwilling to let the go out on loan (they could be sold - lower wage bill, income from sale, don't have to include in 25 man squad) and will always wait until the last day of the transfer window to size up all the bids and maximise revenue potential.

I know we have a need to improve the options in defence and that a lot of the fans are frustrated (me included), but we all need a bit of patience. If PJ's job was an easy one we would all be doing it!

what can you do?, resign you stupid scouser if you don't know what to do.
there are dozens of centre halfs in the football league, starting with P'boro, no idea who he is, but he is twice as good as what we have and would probably cost 20p
