Jewell Keen to Sign Andrews and Collins Permanently
Jewell Keen to Sign Andrews and Collins Permanently
Thursday, 17th Nov 2011 10:59

Town boss Paul Jewell says he’d like to sign midfielder Keith Andrews and defender Danny Collins on a permanent basis. Andrews’s half-season loan from Blackburn is up in January, while Collins’s now extended spell from Stoke ends after the Derby County match in December.

Asked whether he’d like to make Republic of Ireland star Andrews a permanent addition to his squad, Jewell said: “We’d like to, the same with Danny Collins.

"But people have to realise they’re on Premier League contracts and if we can’t do it, we can’t do it, but somewhere along the line we’d love to do it.

“If the players want to do it and we can come to some arrangement with the clubs, we’d love to do it, but I don’t want to say it’s going to happen as it might not because there’ll be other clubs watching them keeping doing well or Blackburn might want Keith back. But all things being equal, we’d like to keep them.

“Marcus has spoken to Keith’s agent and has indicated that we’d would like to keep Keith here beyond this season. But it’s not that easy, as I’m sure you can imagine.”

Andrews has 18 months remaining on his deal at Ewood Park, but has no intention of returning to the Lancashire side, and Collins's Stoke terms are also up at the end of 2012/13.

The Blues boss says he’s continuing his search for young talent in the mould of summer signing Aaron Cresswell, having made the trip to watch Preston North End and Southend last Saturday: “We also want to bring in a younger element to the squad, the Cressys of this world, who show a real hunger and desire to play and enjoy coming into training every day.

"If you can get the right mixture of young and experienced players then it will be a terrific future for us."

Meanwhile, he says midfielder Andy Drury, whose loan at Crawley is up in December, could still be in his plans on his return: “He has been an bit unfortunate since he has been here in fairness.

“He has come in and played well, but then been left out. He has probably not had the long run in the team.”

However, Jewell says he will look to "trim" his large squad during the January transfer window when he says bringing in another central defender in addition to the players he already has will be amongst his priorities.

Wages, I thought we could not offerd to sign players like Austin Mr Clegg. Then what do you do, you give Bullard 20k plus a week the following season. Intresting logic.

Marcus Evans, association in owning the club, supposed backer.
Paul Jewell ,Football Manager, employed for his expertise and hopefully creating a successful team.
No brainer I would of thought.
( Unless your thought is that Evans holds all of the cards and most of what we have now is his cock up)

Leadbitter. Peters. Bowyer. Smith. Ingy. Peters. Healy. Murphy. Ellington. All these can happily feck off in January.

For 6 years every manager has said we need "young, hungry players".....so Jewell signs the opposite. Forget ME's millions for once and make Osman crucial in bringing through the future. Throughout our glory days we relied on youth. I'm sick of us becoming a retirement home.

Agre we need to trim the squad in January hopefully starting with the older injury prone brigade Bullard,Bowyer,Scotland then throw in Leadbitter and go with the younger, fitter members of the squad but what will PJ do? He will let Peters,O'Connor,go instead and if he's not careful Carson will want to go as well. We need pace in wide areas which we have got in Carson and Martin but the need to be playing regular first team football.

Danny Collins is the priority of these two I'd say, and as his Stoke contract expires in the summer fortunately he looks the most likely to stay with us. A new 6-month loan followed by a free transfer hopefully.

As for Andrews, I am not sure it is worth taking on a Premier League contract for a 31-year-old central midfielder when we already have others, although I expect Bowyer, Leadbitter and Healy will leave in the summer so if we can get him on a free transfer to compensate for the wages then the deal may be worth doing.

Good players for us so far, but will their performances continue at that level if we sign them permanently? Case in point a certain Mr Bullard.

What is wrong with people on here? Saying off load Bowyer??? You'd think anybody with an ounce of football knowledge would come to realise that he has been one of our better performers in a pretty miserable season! Who cares about his age, he along with Andrews are the only ones in the team that seem to give it their all!

ME getting involved shows that he is at least interested in what's going on.

My get-rid would include Ingarmarssen, Edwards and probably Smith but that would be all for now.

Another CB in January equals the end for Smith or Delaney i'd assume.

If, as it looks we keep Collins, it would leave Ingi and Sonko (with Collins and Sonko as first choice) - hopefully a youngish, and hate to use the phrase but hungry up and coming CB - and before anyone says that coud be Smith, he's proven he isn't up to it.

Most of our oldsters are only on a years contract, would definately sign both of these. Priskin, Smith, Peters, Murphy can all leave and hopefully take Leadbitter with them. Would also like to see Andrews play holding mid and push Jimmy further up the park where he was so effective last season.

With the players we have i think we should play 3-5-2 as i think it would suit us. In my opinion a team of;
Stockdale
Collins sonko delaney (untill january)
Edwards creswell as wingbacks
Bower andrews
JET (attacking midfield)
Chopra scotland

Subs:
Lee- barret
Ingy
Carson
Bullard
Murphy

I think with a new cente back, sonko fit and hopefully billy sharp to replace scotland looks like a team capable of challenging for play offs minumum. As well as hopefully playing nice football on the way, lets bring back some joe royle style excitment to porman road. What do people think of this ?

i agree ! what a load of rubbish people write on here , its only me that has proper comments. the rest haven't a clue. we should get rid of stockdale, delaney edwards ,bowyer, bullard, jet, murphy, scotland, andrews and most of the reserves. the chief executive, the owner and 75% of the fans who are just not supportive enough .
we should keep our pies and bring back the old strip.and put players on a performance based salary system and keep jewel for 12 months to amuse us with his witty observations.
