Town Face Battle for Keeper Kuszczak
Town Face Battle for Keeper Kuszczak
Tuesday, 1st May 2012 12:35

Town face stiff opposition for Tomasz Kuszczak’s signature with Spurs, QPR, Fulham, Werder Bremen and even Bayern Munich all reported to also be showing interest in the out-of-contract Manchester United keeper.

The 30-year-old Pole, who ended the season on loan at Watford, is understood to be top of Paul Jewell’s summer wish list as he looks to add a permanent number one to his squad ahead of the 2012/13 campaign.

At most of those clubs Kuszczak would be the second-choice, as he has been throughout his time at Old Trafford, and the former West Brom man says he wants to play more regularly at this stage of his career: "I have decided to move [from Manchester United] and be a first-choice keeper. I do not want to be a replacement any longer.

"My family like England as much as me," he added. "I think that I know the style of play and I have made my name here. But I have serious options in Germany to consider as well. My agent is working on a possible move to the Bundesliga."

Kuszczak also revealed that he had chances to moved to Aston Villa or rejoin the Baggies last summer.

Birmingham’s Colin Doyle has also been linked with the Blues but was not the keeper Jewell met for talks last Thursday.

Meanwhile, Doncaster midfielder James Coppinger has conceded that he may move on from the relegated Rovers this summer and wouldn’t be averse to relocating to Suffolk if Town renewed last year’s interest: “I think Ipswich is a great club. I have some friends who have played at Ipswich in the past and they speak highly of the club and the place.

“With them being in the Championship and an ambitious club, it is always somewhere you would look to go.”

However, speaking after Saturday’s game, Blues boss Paul Jewell played down the likelihood of Town doing a deal for the 31-year-old, having previously said he’d speak to Rovers manager Dean Saunders about the former Exeter man: “I don’t think so. We’d like good players, he’s a good player, Coppinger, but I don’t think so.”

Elsewhere, former Blues coach and assistant manager John Gorman has decided to retire at the end of the season. Gorman, 62, worked under George Burley and then had a second spell at the club during Jim Magilton’s time in charge. The Scot is currently assisting Karl Robinson at MK Dons.

His family like England as much as they like him? What a strange thing to say...

Well, thats settled then. Paul can now look all moony eyed at Colin Doyle for a bit before he decides to move elsewhere also.

Hmmm will be a tough one for him, Champions League football or a relegation fight in The Championship?

We could never afford him.

Why do we so often have to go for players who've been on Match of the Day? Is that how we scout these days? If the last four years (and Southampton and Norwich) have taught us anything, it's that better value and more motivated players are available elsewhere.

We are the only club he'd be number (possibly QPR) but thats all we've got.
Rather Doyle anyway. Seen him play and looks like a flapper to me.

the club have signalled their intent, releasing what is seen as 'deadwood' and also losing out on leadbitter aswell. does seem to indicate a hefty overhaul of the squad again. I am a little worried that like last summer, we will miss out on our first chocie targets and then be looking to fill the squad with whatever we can get. also a little worried that we may go too far down the 'young and hungry' route (which can also be described as inexperienced) in the same way we signed too many older players last time. jewell has spoken for a while about how we need to get the balance right and i trust him and back him to the hill but i would be lying if i said im not a little nervous. is the addition of 6-7 new players (i happen to think we will sign more) going to help stability?

Over rated, just because of the Man Ure badge he's held in a higher esteem than he should be.

Much rather have Brad Kuzan, if it's someone dropping down from the Premiership

Will be very surpised if we get anywhere near this signing so have written this off. Doyle is a good call but there must be many others out there. I agree we need young hungry players but the goalkeeping position is a little different and an experienced keeper will do me well. Move on PJ can't see this one happening.

If only us and one other club would make him number one, and if the wages are right then you never know.
