Town and Cardiff Sound Out Ex-Posh Keeper
Town and Cardiff Sound Out Ex-Posh Keeper
Sunday, 13th May 2012 22:11

TWTD understands that Town and Cardiff City have both spoken to ex-Peterborough keeper Joe Lewis since his release by the London Road club. The Bluebirds have so far shown the more serious interest in the former England U21 international, who began his career at Norwich City.

The 24-year-old is leaving Posh this summer having fallen out of favour during 2011/12 following a six-month spell on the sidelines after breaking a kneecap in last year’s League One play-offs.

Lewis is familiar to members of the coaching staff at both Town and Cardiff. Prior to his January 2008 £400,000 move to Peterborough, the 6ft 6in tall keeper came through the ranks at Norwich where he worked with Blues goalkeeper-coach Malcolm Webster and Town Academy manager Sammy Morgan.

Amongst the current Cardiff staff, Lewis also worked with keeper-coach James Hollman, who coincidentally held the same position at Portman Road until last summer, and was a youngster with the Canaries during manager Malky Mackay’s time as a player in Norfolk. Current Bluebirds first choice keeper David Marshall was a team-mate at Carrow Road.

In addition to his five U21 caps, Lewis has played for England at U16, U17 and U19 levels and was called up to the full squad in 2008 for friendlies against Trinidad and Tobago and the USA, while he spent spells on loan at Stockport and Morecambe when with the Canaries. During his 190 games for Posh, he helped them to two promotions from League One and one from League Two.

Manchester United’s Polish keeper Tomasz Kuszczak is understood to be top of Blues boss Paul Jewell’s list of potential new number ones, but with several other higher profile clubs in Germany and England also interested is likely to have to look at alternative options.

Birmingham’s Colin Doyle has also been linked but with sources close to Portman Road playing down the Blues’ interest.

Lewis is no good - just ask any Posh fan. Boyd would make sense on a free transfer.

Can Clegg get a deal tied up before others clubs get involved?

We all know the answer.

Why "itfc1981" are you so negative and predictable in your comments?

Good keeper, would be a good signin. It won't happen though.

Pretty sure Simon Clegg is paid by Norwich to f*ck things up for us so badly.

Not for me too error prone and hardly played for posh this season. Plenty out there better than him although probably out of our price range i.e. Guzan, Westwood.

Before anyone comments on it. theres a difference between being "not very optimistic" and negative, just saying.

We should look at Tom Heaton, if cardiff gets Lewis

I know alot of town fans are very interested in this, but is Lewis welcome at town? looking at his past being a former sc*m and all that?

no, please no. i'm from peterborough, and go there regularly, plus most of my mates are posh fans, and he is the most inconsistent keeper there is. do not rate him one bit. PLEASE NO! keiron westwood for me, or ben amos!

Fairly error prone in the first half of the season but generally regarded as a good keeper I think. Kuzsack and Lewis competing with each other would be good I reckon, wouldn't be too impressed with just ALB and Lewis.

Because Sindre history is on my side. Wish it was not but our CEO can not get deals done when there is any competition.

Itfc1981 - really don't think u can blame clegg for Rhodes. Only one man to blame for that and he is now a tv pundit. As for Lewis, not for me, whenever I have seen him error prone. Westwood please.

Clegg sanctioned the worst sale in living memory. Of that there is no doubt. Selling a player who scored 41 goals in yths and resers is a disgrace, all those involved are culpable.

cANT UNDERSTAND why alot of people on here really rate him

@itfc1981 - it's the job of the Chief Exec to action decisions made by the manager and the owner/chairperson. It's not his job to actually make the decisions. Clegg has become a scapegoat mostly because he talks business language rather than fans' language. He's not to blame for deals collapsing. If the problem is the club offering too low wages then blame the owner or even the stay away fans for reducing the funding. If you really want to blame Clegg for something then blame him for his lack of knowledge of football and, perhaps, for the hands off approach that the board takes, and has always taken, at Town.

Marcus you have basically suggestingClegg serves no purpose in a positive or negative sense.

I am blaming him for his lack of knowledge of football!
