[Blog] Luongo In, Hyam Out, In-Out, In-Out, You Shake It All About...
Written by ITFCOYB on Friday, 27th Jul 2012 15:37

...you do the hokey-cokey and you turn around. What is it all about?

Here’s a quick blog for discussion, on that old favourite topic of loans. Let’s face it, Tottenham’s young protégé Massimo Luongo is too young and inexperienced to play the highly responsible role of holding midfield for them in the Premiership.

Against the likes of David Silva, Wayne Rooney, RVP etc, he’s likely to be exposed a bit from time to time, very few players under 25 wouldn’t be, it’s international standard week in week out.

Give him a few years of good schooling in the Championship though with a team that plays good stuff and to his strengths- and when he hits 25 and has 150 games under his belt he may well be there or thereabouts.

It seems that he does have Premiership touch, ball retention and that confidence that will set him apart from the average Championship player. It’s early to say that with any confidence, of course, but Paul Jewell seems to rate him and the reviews of the other night against Cambridge suggest he could be the glue that knits together the passing game that we used to be famous for at Portman Road.

So, Spurs get to add experience and confidence to a young star and we get the benefit of a player we couldn’t afford. All good? Perhaps not for Luke Hyam, as I read people moan. What about developing our own talent? Yes, what about it? For Hyam to be consistently good enough at this level, as well as the fairly effective defensive attributes we’ve seen, he needs to have more confidence in his passing and ball retention to be a Tractor hero. He needs 150 games under his belt. Twenty-five would be a good age for a holding/defensive midfielder in this division, and Hyam certainly seems to have the potential to play at this level.

It’s all part of the merry-go-round of the modern game. Sometimes the loans are not great- sometimes they fall down through misfortune (David Stockdale) or poor decisions (Reece Wabara) and sometimes, just like transfers, but with fewer tears, they just don’t really work out.

Send out Hyam for a season. Make it clear to him that just as Spurs rate Luongo, we rate him, but he needs games. He needs to show that he is too good for League One and is ready to come and not just contribute to an average Championship side, but boss a competitive one. There’ll be a place for him in the team when he does, and the League One side should benefit from the deal, too.

In a way this is all a bit of a shame. Why can’t players just be owned by the club they play for? Should loans be banned? Either way nothing will change. Welcome Luongo, I have genuinely high hopes he can make a big difference (especially to ball retention) and don’t get down, Hyam, your time in an Ipswich shirt will come.

Yeh, a loan spell for Hyam could work well but only where is is playing week in week out.

The same did wonders for Andy Drury last season.

Good call, give Hyam a loan spell, regular football and he will return a man and replace Luongo when he goes back to Spurs. Or be like Bobby Robson have faith in your young players and give them games, it worked for him and players like Burley & Beattie.....what do you think????

Good blog and good shout, Hyam definatly needs a season in League one, and he is not the only one, Whight, Ainsley and Carson could all do with a solid season of first team football at the level below, then return next season full of experiance and confidence. Just have to be careful that it does not go the way of Ronan Murray, going to Swindon and being in and out of the team, so maybe even consider league two, or scotland?

for a season - in what was a good blog, i feel this is the most important bit. none of this 3 months nonsense. Get games show you are good enough and come into the team like Cresswell did.

Sending Hyam out on loan would be a good idea. However before this happened I would like him to sign a 2 year deal. Don't want to send him off for the last year of contract without securing his future. He may enjoy first team football and not want to come back !!!

Hyam has a year left on his contract. He goes out on loan, he ain't coming back.

As I've said many times before, bring back the competetive reserve leagues and the problem of messing about with loans will go away.

I am not a fan of the loan system and believe its use should be restricted to emergencies only and then only for short term durations. Clubs in lower leagues should not be used to develop players for teams in higher divisions in my view. I can see the argument for taking players on loan where an option to buy is part of the agreement particularly while the transfer window rules remain in place but even this should be restricted.

In the current economic situation the transfer window rules should be scrapped allowing clubs outside the Premiership to sign players on short term contracts at any time of the season. Employment law will eventually eliminate these restraint of trade practices anyway.

Anyway, that's just a personal opinion. Vis-a-Vis the blog, given the circumstances I agree with the points raised. It's clear LH is not rated highly enough by the management to trust him with a midfield place in the long term and he certainly needs games to convince himself and the management that he has a future with us. Thus, imperfect as it is, the loan system should be used to our benefit. I would be very unhappy though if the club adopted an 'out of sight, out of mind' policy as they have done with so many other fringe players over the years.

AFC Bournemouth may never trust us again with our "loan out" players ... they took Jaime Peters and he was totally average !

But they are a good club with ambition and money and I'd suggest PJ talks to Hyam to get a year extension first, and then talks to AFCB ASAP to get the deal done .... the sun shines down here too Luke!

I would rather see Hyam in our squad, however if PJ isnt going to play him then loan would be a good move, but give him another contract first, just as Spurs have done with Luongo.

Or they can both play in the same team like they did the other day.. a "holding midfield role" is something they can do really well not something they are limited to. and will only play if we play that formation?

Personally speaking i doubt weather hyam or lougo have the legs to play a whole season in that holding midfeild role . Were talking best part of 50 games . If i were PJ i would be looking to give them both somthing in the region of 20-25 games this season. I am pretty sure there are things which they can learn from each other from playing in that role. keep both at the club for me . get them working together and competing with each other for that slot in the side.

And just to add to my point... They have both started again tonight, I assume with jet and Carson on wings hyam and luongo in centre with Martin in front of them and behind chopra

Definitely got a point but does Hyam really want to be loaned out for the next 4 or 5 years in a lower league when he's shown more than once he can be a very productive player at this level?

Hyam and Luongo seem to be playing together quiet well (suprised me, i thought Luongo or Hyam) but why loan him out if he actually is playing for us? honestly i dont get some people?

I disagree with almost everything you have written here.

Hyam can play alongside Luo go. We've seen that against West Ham and Col U.
