Floods on the Beeb 21:22 - Aug 29 with 6709 views | Crawfordsboot | Is anyone else totally fed up with the BBC coverage of the Texas floods. Yes it's all pretty dramatic and traumatic for those involved and terrible for the families of the nine dead. However the BBC gives hardly a mention to the truly devastating monsoon floods in India and Asia where the death toll is in excess of 1,200. Yes that's right more than a hundred times worse than Texas. But hey they don't offer a photo op with Milena in her six inch heels. Makes me despair of our press.

Floods on the Beeb on 09:40 - Aug 30 by WeWereZombies | So we can expect Australian politics to be dominated by aborigines in future? (Sorry for asking) |
Heh! Another neat one I thought, was a comment about members of our royal family being sent on trade deputations to various parts of the world, which sometimes means that in effect, the supposed official Australian head of state is actually competing against Australia for business! Certainly helps you understand Australians' desire to get shot of us!

Floods on the Beeb on 21:36 - Aug 29 by Ryorry | Yes but not on their TV news, which I think is the OP's (good) point. Coverage of the US is generally overdone by the Beeb in all sorts of progs - eg 'Up All Night' on R5l regularly has features & news on it, but never anything from Africa, Asia, Australia, etc. We know the US is important, but not to the near exclusion of everything else - some balance required. |
Listen to R4 then. | |

Maybe they expect listeners to have the brain to sort out the wheat from the chaff?

My point was that the Beeb is not just US/UK focused if you look further afield (which of course you do :)). 6Music is particularly good for tunes from around the world.

I know! I was a fan of music from around the world decades before it acquired the name "World Music" btw! Happily R3's 'Late Junction' then started featuring it regularly, and that excellent show (usually starts around 11pm for a couple of hours most weekdays) is still going decades later.

Ah, my chance to name drop. As well as 'Late Junction' there is also 'World on Three' at the same time but on Friday nights on BBC R3 - sometimes hosted by Mary Anne Kennedy, who I was able to say hello to in Scots Gaelic the weekend before the one just gone at the church just by Glemham Hall. And she not only understood me but said how nice it was to hear the Gaelic down in Suffolk.

OK, OK, you've wringed an uppie out of me! Also listen to that, tho not as regularly as LJ. Hats off to the Proms this year - they're obviously going out of their way to make them far more eclectic and appealing to a much wider audience - e.g. the Jazz one, Oklahoma (which was brilliant and I loved - and I usually hate musicals!).
