Pretty interesting stuff. Certainly has some advantages such as less pollution and more cargo per ship. It should also be easier to code the navigation as there are less obstacles and more space on the oceans.

It won't be replacing the existing crewed ships for quite some time though.

I'l read that in a bit thanks for posting. Did you know that 15 mega-ships generate more co2 than all the cars in the world put together each year? And yet globalisation is good.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

Not a new idea tho' is it? Everything used to go by ship, barge etc. until the railways came along. Then during the 50's it seemed like a good idea to put everything on the road (was that because of Ernie Marples?)
Now we have started to rebuild the railways and re-introduce coastal shipping.
Non crewed ships will be OK until the first disaster e.g. dumping 25k tonnes of toxic fertiliser in the oggin.
One of the blokes who delivers for Hermes says they want to go to driverless vans but don't know how to manage the oversize farm vehicles

Seems incredibly utopian.

What happens when something goes wrong? An engine part failing, a fire or severe weather damages something? Sure, an awful lot of tasks are already automated but there's whole orders of magnitude more complexity than with driverless cars.

There’s probably only one person on this board qualified to answer this but he’s a bit busy in a traffic jam

I did PM it to him in case he missed it - am sure he will see it in due course.

That's a fair point actually, although less relevant in the initial use case of close-to-shore transport where someone could get on board easily.

In the open oceans it would be an issue though.
