Saracens 14:29 - Jan 22 with 1315 viewshype313

I know lots on here aren't bothered by Rugby, but I find it incredible that they got offered to choose between opening up thier books or get relegated, and they chose the latter. Regardless of the fact they will walk the league next season, but to knowingly lose the spine of theirs and the national team so you don't have to show how much you have cheated is bonkers.

Hopefully the FA will look at this and start punishing clubs in a far more stringent way, presume QPR are still involved in legalities with their fine from 5 years ago?

Football really should take a lead from this.

This has been an open secret for years in the game, I'd been aware of it for 4 or 5 years and assumed it was all common knowledge how much they were cheating but obviously not.

Also, with regards to FFP, there is a big difference between overspending and having accounts audited and doing a lot of stuff off the books and getting caught bang to rights

Its been going on since at least 2012. As a Rugby fan & STH at Harlequins for many years, yes its refeshing that a game with a salary cap does actually enforce it. However Premiership Rugby have known about this since 2015 but chose to sweep it under the carpet. Its only the Daily Mail journalist who decided to look into it more deeply & uncovered the truth, who has brough justice. I think Premiership Rugby are next in line for an investigation. Its not the first time this has happened, Melbourne Rebels were stripped oftitles won in the NRL a few years ago. A lot more to come out here as yet. I suspect the Sarries Internationals will go out on sabbatical loans to other leagues for a season & when they return, the rules may be very different.

You're right - Saracens were doing all sorts of nonsense before, such as paying a player's wife £100,000 a year to make a few sandwiches, as a way around the salary cap. Very clumsy from a man as clever as Nigel Wray (who was also a brief & unsuccessful owner of Nottingham Forest in the late 1990s). I'm also amazed Wray thought his co-investment scam would hoodwink the authorities (but maybe he thought they didn't care, given he's got away with his previous scams). However, I'm told the South Africans who had co-owned Saracens for 10 years sold their half back to Wray in 2018 as they were sure the illicit dealings would get rumbled.

I listened to a podcast with Andy Goode who had a twitter spat with Brenda Venter earlier, Venter had a shocker, couldn't admit that they had been done wrong, it was whatabouterry on so many levels

That’s one of the biggest irritations for me. The fact that Saracens getting caught breaking the rules seems to be a signal to change the rules as much as it has been to enforce them.

Wouldn’t surprise me if - once Saracens come safely back up - the Premiership doesn’t bin relegation and promotion altogether.

There’s talk of them having to stay down for two years. One year punishment, second year they have to prove they are financially sound. They must rue the day they got involved with Venter. Personally I think that relegation will stay but it certainly wouldn’t be a surprise to see a huge change to the Salary cap rules.

A mate was talking about this at my Cricket Dinner last season

Are Saracens likely to be the only team who were doing this or is it known others have been doing it also?

It's good to see a proper punishment put into place, FFP has proved almost completely pointless in the English game thus far

Several clubs have been bending the rules and getting away with it for some time

Others like Bournemouth got promoted, took the fine and have enjoyed Premier League football for years after

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!
