Okay mate.

Worth mentioning that Andy Marshall himself admitted that his performances weren't good enough and "accepted" the clubs choice to release him on a free transfer in the close season after being displaced by Paul Gerrard.

Seem to remember him saving a pen and looking top class away to Derby, one time.

The only time I can remember him hitting those heights, mind...

Even Wikipedia makes reference to his inability to keep the ball on the pitch:

Gunn remained the first choice until the end of the 1996—97 campaign when he was dropped for the first time in his Norwich career. Marshall seized the opportunity to establish himself as Norwich's number one, and despite his inability to kick the ball straight from a goal kick (often the ball went out for a throw) he became an established player and a fairly popular figure and with the club's supporters during his time at Carrow Road.

Marshall was talented as a young player but went backwards. He wasn’t great for us tbh. It happens with players, but it’s especially noticeable with goalies for obvious reasons. For the aged like me, Mervyn Day, the West Ham keeper in the 70s was a classic for that.

As it goes, Kelvin Davis was a really good keeper for us. One of the better ones in my view.

I’m not sure I ever really saw enough of him to make a fair judgement. He clearly had good technical ability and I remember him pulling off some very decent reaction saves but ultimately he was kept out of the side by Andy Marshall so he couldn’t have been that good.

Richard Wright, Kelvin Davis, Asmir Begovic and Bartosz Bilakowski are the only goalkeepers I saw play for Ipswich that I considered the kind of keepers who could win you points.

Honourable mentions to dependable but unspectacular keepers, Paul Gerrard, Stephen Henderson, Mike Pollitt, Keith Brannigan, Martin Fulop.

you never rated Neil Alexander Libs?

I’d say he was solid and dependable but again I didn’t see too much of him, think he played less than 30 times for us!

That being said, Begovic and Pollitt made minimal appearances yet I fancied them straight away. Probably helped I’d seen plenty of the, both beforehand.

Perhaps just worth mentioning that Bryan Gunn (despite a rather famous ITFC goal!) was a seriously good keeper, very consistent over a long period of time.

Keith Branagan gone by then? - I remember him stepping in on a couple of occasions and actually being very steady and strong. I think he was towards the end of his career though so possible he retired the season we went down? Don't really remember tbh.

He had a bad shoulder injury which eventually ended his career. Had he been here and fit he would have started ahead of Andy Marshall under Joe Royle, from what I recall he never rated him at all, hence the loanees and having a look at other keepers on the staff.

Branagan Retires 31st Oct 2002 00:58
Town keeper Keith Branagan has been forced to retire from the game due to his shoulder injury. Branagan saw a specialist on Tuesday after a nine-month battle against the injury which led to an operation in April. 0

It is a pity that Neil Alexander did not stay a lot longer because he was a good goalkeeper (in my opinion).

I think that we could not really hold on to him once Glasgow Rangers came in for him.
