That does change things, assuming they were in the plain clothes.

in the video it's a marked police car and when she comes out of the car the police are uniformed.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

I hadn't noticed that bit - back it swings again.

I can see why some might think the police were stopping her cos she’s black.

I can see why she might be fearful of getting out the car cos police don’t like black people*

But if she had got out of the car when asked (as I would, but I’m white) then none of that would have happened.

The policeman didn’t seem racist in what he said, but who knows about his assumption behind stopping her?

Edit *I mean that for the sake of argument not as a blanket comment on all police.

Edit 2: the locking her up for 18 hours just seems like retribution for giving them a hard time.

Edit 3: I’m gonna get it now innit.

To be fair, its dark and the windows were apparently tinted, depending on where the police car approached from, they may not have known the colour of the driver when they pulled her over.

However, once she had spoken to them, there doesn't seem much reason for them to need to search the car.

I think the police handled it in a polite and calm manner, but didnt need to continue with insisting on the search.

It doesn't explain why she was stopped.

She said she had a panic attack, which if you feel overwhelmingly you're being unreasonable targeted, is understandable.

If there's a potential problem like that, get someone down there who can talk to her, as she requested.

The job isn't only about law enforcement.

Again fair, but to my knowlegde they always ask you to get out when stopped - certianly when I've been done for speeding or for a search (way back when I looked young) thats been the case.

Its basic procedure I think. For pretty obvious reasons.

The presence of those seeking the truth is infinitely to be preferred to the presence of those who think they've found it. (Sir Terry Pratchett)

Indeed- puts the police officer in an impossible position. They cannot just let it go once she refuses.

Whether it was a justified stop in the first place is something to consider carefully with all the facts.

Whether one can infer racism, I think is difficult. White people get stopped for driving with tinted windows too- and would undoubtedly have similar initial treatment if they refuse to get out when asked.

We are in a tricky place with all this. There are clearly issues to be addressed- though I think far more so in the States. We need to be very careful about inferring racism in every interaction with police that doesnt go well.

Indeed.
