Tommy Smith is on trial at Col U 16:08 - Aug 15 with 13635 viewsTheTrueBlue1878

Played this afternoon against Gillingham. Will likely feature against Town this week.

Absolute madness that is.

Sorry if already covered.

Poll: Would you be happy with Paul Lambert?

He was at Bury Town with an acquaintance of mine.

Was it Joe that signed Ian Miller from Bury Town? I never saw him play back then but have subsequently seen him play for Needham Market and a couple of other local clubs, he was very solid.

Considering how much he likes a drink and a bet it was a surprise to see him getting a trial at 25. Top bloke though

I’ve a mate in his mid twenties that’s been a prolific scorer wherever he’s been, Needham Youth/Reserves, Stowmarket, Walsham, Witham, Brightlingsea.
Electric pace and a proper finisher, think Jamie Vardy.
Always thought he would potentially make the step up as he’s one of those that’s really dedicated and lives his life right, I know an ex-conference manager was aware of him but no one’s ever made a move, at 25/26 you’d assume it’s not going to happen for him.

Then there’s another lad from round my way who has had a solid non-league career that was stalled by injuries, but aged 25 was randomly picked up by a league club after one good season where he played a good number of games for the first time in a long time.
He then spent two years on the physios bench and was subsequently released...

I guess a lot of it just as with the Academy graduates is about right place/right time, just as much as it’s about ability.

he is the ultimate in never kicked a ball but gets an opinion because he attends games. Ross Crane was non league last season so Wilson is better than him by the logic, Crane will now be a league player so he is now as good or better over night it seems. It is a nonsense, my point on Wilson is that he is getting contracts based on his CV and his size, not his ability. People talk about Chambers etc being a donkey but his touch is still class, he is miles above Wilson in that regard. If Wilson was a dominating cb it could be excused but he isnt

There is incredible talent in non league but not being full time and having the breaks means you have a different route.

Equally, having played at a decent level doesn't make your opinion trump anyone else's. Plenty of thick people play football.

I bet Bloots will downarrow this.

Tyler French, centre back who was on trial here once upon a time but is now with Bradford City, was class at AFC Sudbury (bar his last season) he’s only been pro for ten minutes but he’s already technically a better footballer than Wilson.

Thing is, I don’t think everyone is really aware of the talent there is in the lower leagues, it’s a market you will see more clubs exploiting in an attempt at streamlining costs in the current climate.

I'll be honest, when he said locally I thought he meant down the local park. Obviously there are decent players in non-league who haven't made the step up yet.

I bet Bloots will downarrow this.

i could name 4/5 local lads ive seen that are better footballers, and able to kick a ball straight without ballooning it out.

you don't think I grasp, how very cnty you sound

My apologies, I do sound cnty. When you said "local lads" I thought you meant lads who play down the local recreation ground for the dog and duck. Obviously there are decent players at non-league level, that's where most players start off.

I bet Bloots will downarrow this.

great story about Beattie getting a lad from Achilles a trial down at Portsmouth. considering his day job was a roofer, then on the piss in the belstead most evenings...

turned up down at pompys raining ground, bag and boots, the game got changed to the following day so they put him up in a hotel, told him to get some food and the bill was on them..... that evening he ordered his dinner with one soft drink, then tried his luck with the beers..... 7/8 pints later he goes to bed.

Wakes up, plays 60mins in this game, scores twice.

few days later Beattie tells him they were really impressed but the fact his bar bill had beers on there they decided against...

We’ll be good again... one day

Wow. It's fine to put booze on expenses when you work in an ad agency - doing so the day before a trial for a professional sports team is as dumb as it gets.

I bet Bloots will downarrow this.
