I will partly step back from my rant. Its not the selling of a player. Its the transfer request. The timing. The low fee. The impact on the team.

For £2 million I would say to Downes - we have you contracted for 3 seasons and its worth 2 million to us to keep a player of your quality for 3 seasons. Thats a lot of games. And if you go for free at the end of that then good luck to you.

And finally as a season ticket holder - assuming I can go - I really, really, really want to see a team start to take shape and us to move forward. If Im honest I don't give a monkeys about good luck lad rubbish.

The Ajax comparison isn't really right as they have stayed at the top of their league for decades and they aren't languishing in div 3. We have only sold in recent years to move backwards.

And are we really blessed with our academy? Other than Downes what other youth team player have we sold in the last 10 years to a premier league side for good money?

I'm not big fans of transfer request etc, listen he is ell within his rights to go to the boss and state that it is something he is interested in looking at, but never like transfer requests in football, seem to be final nails in coffins before a transfer actually happens.

The low fee is partially irrelevant right now, he's under a long deal, and we are fortunate to have an owner with deep pockets who will rarely be bullied on the economic side of a deal, would be very different were we an Accrington etc.

I don't think the Ajax comparison isn't right, I'm stating we are a carbon copy of Ajax, but I was more alluding to the fact that they also struggle to keep their best academy products when the big guns come calling, Van De Bee, Ziyech, De Ligt, De Jong all moved to European giants in the last 12 months, but they will turn to their academy which they trust and find the next crop again, and we have to do that, obviously at our particular level, that is why Evans has invested to so much into the academy.

Well the investment hasn't always been there, but when the conveyor belt starts, I think it will begin to become ever present, the likes of Charlie Brown and Ben Knight have been signed by English heavyweights, and at our level we are now players who could go on to be very good ITFC players, Woolfenden, Downes, Dozzell, McGavin, Morris, Lankester, El Mizouni, Dobra, Smith, Ndaba.

I'll put it like this, if they develop how they could, we would never be able to sign them in the open market, so bringing that type of quality through is our best way of getting the best players at our level.

Oh and btw.....before you go on about taking a reality check....just look back at your comment

"In a 15 year (give or take a couple) career, you need to take all you can."

This isn't the 1970s footballer wages. You think Flynn Downes won't be a multiple millionaire by the time he finishes playing regardless of whether he is with us next season or not?

He won’t be a multi millionaire if he stays in League One which is what you implied. As for Dyer, it’s ancient history. The game and society are very different and you can’t apply age old principles to either - much as I’d like to.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

I'm not sure why time since the Dyer sale has a negative relevance to the principle of what makes a good sale. What left a good taste in the mouth was timing at the end of the season allowing us time to recruit, no handed in transfer demand, a player that had given us several good seasons and a fee that was ok.

How does the fact that was 20 years ago make that any less relevant to what makes a good transfer today?

I don't accept that handing in a transfer demand on the Eve of the season starting is anything but negative for the team and unsettling other players. I care about seeing a winning itfc. Not the individual future of Flynn Downes. 1.6 million quid or 3 seasons. I know what i will take.

Its the cycle of football, I would hold no grudges to the individual, why would he stay here? He's had a good education here throughout his first team career, he is certainly ready to make his next career move. We take a good amount of money for him and continue to develop the academy, it is exactly what Evans invested heavily in the academy for.

Ajax have been this at a much higher scale for years and years, and they constantly find the next one to take the spot.

Good luck to the lad.

They can never find the part I need for my Henry hoover.
