The Academy 08:19 - Sep 2 with 1829 views | MonkeyAlan | Why have one? In the position we are now, everytime we get anyone who is going to be half decent they will be poached by a PL or Champ club anyway and we can't reinvest that money only on cr@p players who only get paid peanuts because they are exactly that. It will be Miz or Dobra or whoever next season, maybe both and more if we don't go up this season. Then the game will be up. I fear we will be playing in front of 4-5000 in 5 years time and will just be another Fleetwood Town, Colchester United. Because as a club this wage cap is going to ruin us. And with muppets like Evans and O Neil running things we have no chance. What a time to be a Town fan.

Of course it isn't only us without one but it was very poor judgement for a club who supposedly wanted its Academy to provide the bulk of it's players in the future. It certainly became largely a closed shop because those Clubs who got it initially didn't want anyone else joining, as I said before. It put us at an immediate disadvantage because any talented youngster we find can be poached by a Cat 1 Academy for peanuts and we are limited as to the areas we can recruit from. It looked a bad decision at the time and it hasnt got any better with hindsight. It was Evans trying to do stuff on the cheap again. The fact the Club applied for Cat 1 status a couple of years later shows the mistake was acknowledged but it was too late to rectify it by then.

Really bizarre take. We are a small club for cat 1, the fact we tried to get it and the fact we put so much into our cat 2 dhould be applauded

We are a small Club now but at the time these events took place 5 or 6 Championship Clubs applied for and obtained Cat 1 status. We will have to disagree on how much that hurt us but there were a couple of posters on this thread who were trying to tell me that we applied for Cat 1 status right from the start, we didn't!

That's just not correct - Birmingham are the latest side who will be getting it over the course of this season - Leeds, Derby, Swansea, Brighton all upgraded whilst in second tier, as did more I can't remember Had we gone for it initially, we'd have had a much softer path into it. Palace were the only side demoted from it, and that is because they didn't even have an academy facility and played their matches at the local Goals centre - other sides failed audits and kept status with improvement notices. Was a massive mistake from the club

Actually I missed the "right at the start" bit of your initial post in the thread, so my apologies for that. I thought you were suggesting we hadn't gone in for Cat 1 when we did actually make quite an effort to do so, albeit a couple of years after the initial categorisation.
