For me, it has to be the lemon. It's just so versatile. I have hot water and lemon every morning (which has loads of health benefits), I use lemon juice and zest in loads of cooking recipes these days, it's a fantastic source of vitamin C which helps ward off colds, one of the most refreshing drinks is lemonade... even my shower gel has lemons in it!

The only down side is it isn't really something you can eat on its own.

Can anyone better the lemon in the fruit world?

I bet Bloots will downarrow this.

Mango
The End

Hmmmm, you make a good point.

Un-ripe Mango, chopped into sticks, and shaken with chilli and salt, is very good.

Drop of line helps as well.

Mango or papaya, both great breakfast fruit. Also if there's ever any going cheap on the last date shelf, I grab those and peel and blend them and freeze the mixture for when I want meat tenderizer.

Lemons are a top ingredient.

Bananas, a once a day snack.

Apples, sliced and roasted with pork. Cored and filled with sultanas [soaked overnight in orange juice] as dessert. Loads of free apples this time of year; I always cook a batch for the freezer.

Grapes with blue cheese.

Do occasionally enjoy grapes with Saint Agur. Great combination alongside a hearty full bodied red.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

Absolutely my go-to late night snack!

Some toast cut into squares...

I certainly don't use orange much in cooking (or in the shower). I love the taste of an orange but the pith - urgh. And they're often a right old mess to open.

I take your point about not being able to eat a lemon on its own, but I don't find that much of an issue when it goes so well with so many things.

The apple is a tasty shout, but when you're looking for the BEST fruit, rather than just tastiest, the apple falls down somewhat.

The pith? I didn't realise you had a lisp.

I like raspberries, although I don't prefer them to apples, pears and oranges.

A different flavor, but nuts are very likable, especially with a brew. It's a healthy snack too. Botanically many nuts are classified as fruit. :) Hoping no one is offended.

I must also mention the dried vanilla fruit, that give us the variety of vanilla taste. It is so good. Simple vanilla ice cream and apple-pie with vanilla sauce.

For culinary fruit taste I like strawberry, apple, orange, blueberry, raspberry and yes, lemon is useful. Cranberry juice is good. I do like to mix fruit juices.

Ripe strawberries with cream and some sugar is a favorite.
