Best fruit? 10:35 - Oct 8 with 2687 views | BrixtonBlue | For me, it has to be the lemon. It's just so versatile. I have hot water and lemon every morning (which has loads of health benefits), I use lemon juice and zest in loads of cooking recipes these days, it's a fantastic source of vitamin C which helps ward off colds, one of the most refreshing drinks is lemonade... even my shower gel has lemons in it! The only down side is it isn't really something you can eat on its own. Can anyone better the lemon in the fruit world?

I'm not convinced by strawberries on pizza

Best fruit? on 11:02 - Oct 8 by Wallingford_Boy | Its a useful cooking ingredient, but thats it. Not a proper fruit as such as you can't eat it, but I agree it smells nice so must make a lovely shower gel. Mint is a better option for me though, more versatile although I am aware thats not really a fruit at all. Apple wins in the "proper fruit" category. |
Mint shower gel is the one. No finer start to the week than a bit of Mint Original Source around your ball sack at 6:30am on a Monday.

Best fruit? on 11:51 - Oct 8 with 1287 views | GeoffSentence | I am going to advance this discussion with the humble blackberry. It is packed full of flavour, can be used in both savoury and sweet dishes, makes the best jam possible. And to top it all, it is abundant and free. All praise to the blackberry. You can argue where it stands in the fruit rankings, but if you try to tell me there is a better drupe, there will be disorder.

What do you do with 2 and 3? Not very versatile. Pineapple and ham on a pizza is lush, I don't care what anyone says.

Have you not tried pomegranate in a feta, avacado, beetroot and tomato salad?

I eat them. Not sure they need to be versatile. Pomegranate could go on porridge or on granola or on a salad or made into juice or used in cocktails.

Pomegranate seeds is a sure fire way to ruin an otherwise nice salad.

It's a good shout, especially as it's free. I just don't personally use them very much. And my fave jam, if I ever have any (quite rare), is strawberry.

Well you see, versatility is part of the criteria for best fruit. It's not just about the taste.

Again, you'd need it with something else? Cheese and pineapple is lush and nostalgic. Pineapple on gammon, lovely. Not sure I could just chow down on pineapple on its own.

Indeed. One of my customers has two old gnarled trees that produced a great crop this summer. Picked, and ate, loads one afternoon before the jaspers moved in. I should have done a Friday poo thread the following day.

Best fruit? on 12:50 - Oct 8 with 1179 views | C_HealyIsAPleasure | Would never have gone for lemon in a million years but you actually make quite a persuasive argument - they are versatile and go so well in so many dishes However, as others have said the idea of something you can’t just eat and find delicious being the best fruit just doesn’t sit well for me I guess it depends on what someone’s interpretation of ‘best’ is really. I think for me if I was to boil it down to only being able to have one fruit for the rest of my life, I’d probably be dull and say banana - mainly as I eat one every day and could still then enjoy the worlds greatest desert (banoffee pie)

I eat quite a lot of bananas. They're great for energy and are good for a hangover! I just find the taste a bit average. I tolerate it rather than really like it. And there must be a million better deserts than a banoffee pie. That's the weird thing about the lemon - given how much I use it I would have to choose it if I could only ever have one fruit. Not being able to eat it on its own isn't really a problem.
